RESEARCH GAP
Scanning the literature, the researcher came acrour the parribility of the social
media wage and academic performance of students. Several studies have been
conducted on social media wage and academic performance of students. Tus,
Rayo, and Cuz (2020), studied on the learner's study habits and it's relation on
their academic performance; Bernard and Dzandza (2018), effed of social
media on acadernic performance of students, Chavez, Olan, Cavandam,
Fallbrow, Perima, and Pitao (2010), the impact of rocial media urage on
effective communication skills. Among the studies have been mentioned none
dealt specifically with the exploring The Relationship between The Social
Media Urage and Academic Performance of ABM Strand students in MBNHS.
Therefore, this study generater new knowledge.
P
RESEARCH PURPOSE
The researchers would like to find out if the connection of social media usage
and academic performance could be true in the local level, specially among the
ABM strands students of Mambago-B National High school. As much
meaningful solutions to the problem may be offered depending upon the result
of the study.

CHAPTER 1

3
RATIONALE
Social networking sites distracted many students on their academic
performance and it became a hindrance to the academic performance of
students. Due to this incident, many students got poor grades or failed in their
class. Many students spend more time on the internet rather than spending time
on their school activities. Living in a technological advancement generation,
most students consume their time on social media sites and would disregard
their academic task in school. Many pupils from Pakistan spend more time on
social media rather than spend more time on their studies. Thus, resulting in
falling or leading to poor academic performances of students. This
controversial issue is expanding and alarming. The compulsion of students to
social media and its negative effect on their academic prudence made the
research to do this study. (Hira Hasnain, Anum Nasreen, Hamza Ijaz 2015)
H
RATIONALE
Social media had a negative impact on the academic performance of many students for
many years. As new technological innovation is revolutionized, many learners are
distracted and dislike their academic performance. Many students would rather spend
more on social media apps than to do their academic task. Students were not conscious
and aware that spending more time on social media affects their academic prudence that
can result in a negative academic endeavor. Due to this, itresults, in a negative factor to
the performance of students from the University of the Philippines.

Many leamers from University of the Philippines-Laguna spend more time on social
media rather than spending time on their academic prudence or set of activities in their
school. Thus, their grades were affected and some failed in their subijeds due to the
distractions of social media. Hence, academic performances of leamers were shaken and
concerned (Okysadie & Nizam, 2016).
H
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
This study aimed to achieve several objectives by investigating the correlation
between social media use and academic performance of Accounting, Business
and Management(ABM) students.

First, it sought to assess the prevalence and pattems of social media usage
among ABM students, including the frequency and duration of their
engagement on different platforms.

Second, it aims to examine the academic performance of ABM students,

focusing on factors such as grades, class participation, and overall academic
performance.
P
RESEARCH OBJECTIVES
Third, the study aimed to establish a correlation between social media usage
and academic performance of ABM students, exploring whether greater usage is
associated with lower performance.

Additionally, it aims to identify specific social media platforms or content types

that may have a more significant impact on educational outcomes and this study
aims to Investigate the potential moderating effects of time management skills
and self- discipline on the relationship between social media use and students'
academic achievement.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

According to Al-Dubai ,Al-Mahrooqi, A., Al-Mahrooqi, S., Al-Mahrooqi, A.,

& Al-Mahrooqi, A. (2018),Social media usage refers to the use of online
platforms and applications that allow individuals to create, share, and
exchange information, ideas, and multimedia content in virtual communities.
Social media platforms include popular sites such as Facebook, Twitter,
Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube, among others. Social media usage has
become increasingly prevalent in recent years, with a significant portion of
the global population using social media for various purposes, such as
communication, entertainment, and socialization.
G
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Social media usage can have both positive and negative impacts, with
potential benefits including increased connectivity, access to information, and
opportunities for self-expression, while potential drawbacks include privacy
concerns, cyberbullying, and negative impacts on mental health and well-
being. Therefore, it is important to promote responsible social media usage
and to understand the potential impacts of social media on various aspects of
life, including academic performance, age, gender, social influence, and
education..

G
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Social media usage has been found to have a significant relationship with
academic performance. A cross-sectional study conducted on Iranian medical
students revealed that there was a negative and significant relationship
between students' addiction to social networking and their academic
performance (Rastegar, 2019). Specifically, male students had a higher level
of addiction to social networking compared to female students. This suggests
that social media usage, particularly at high levels, can negatively impact
students' academic performance..

G
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES
Moreover, social media usage has been linked to various demographic factors
such as age and gender. A study on university students found that younger
students and male students were more likely to be addicted to social
networking (Zaremohzzabieh 2015). Additionally, social media usage has
been found to have a significant impact on social influence and education.
For instance, social media can be used as a tool for educational purposes, but
excessive usage can also lead to addiction, which can negatively impact
students' academic performance and social relationships. Therefore, it is
important to promote responsible social media usage among students, taking
into account the potential impact on academic performance, age, gender,
social influence, and education

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Engel (2016), stated that mobile applications have been developed through two
perspectives; the first being through a descriptive methodology in which the
current researcher has detailed the creation process of an application. The second
perspective was through a quantitative methodology in which students'
perceptions regarding the capabilities of smartphones and apps for improving
learning processes in university subjects were assessed.

E
REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

Huang and Shu-ching (2015) concluded that the use of applications developed
specifically for following university subjects is highly valued by students as a
new format which both supports and enhances learning practices while also
providing not only further opportunities to establish connections and relations
with their subjects, but also fostering collaborative work among students and
professors. In this generation, using gadgets is very trendy and one of the parts of
an individual's life.

Using a cellphone is very popular and has many benefits according to usage like it
can be used for communication, gathering data, and also for better performance at
school and it is according to the applications that will be used. When it comes to
school performance, there's an app that can help the students to make the study
easier. It can also affect the performance of the students for academic purposes. In
addition, applications can be used to improve learning and participation of the
students and it can improve their self-confidence. To conclude that, students valued
the apps as their learning materials that can help to improve their studies and to
improve learning of the student (Pechenkina, Brown, and Liu 2016).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES
From time to time, people would want answers to some common questions and
would seek practical knowledge and bits and pieces of information pertaining to
health, for instance, language, etc. Ideally, one would go to a bookstore to buy a
book on the topic, or search the Internet. A book may prove to be expensive and
going to a bookstore requires time which sometimes busy people could not find.
Again, searching the Internet would mean knowledge and skills on the use of the
hardware and the software. Providing access to these practical information
through the cellular phone upon demand would prove to be not only convenient
but cheaper as well to the individual (Hasan, Ashraf, Abdullah and Murad 2016).

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURES

The author said that from time to time, people want answers to some common
questions. Not everyone would want to have a formal degree or to be a
professional to just answer common questions, they just want practical
knowledge to help them with their everyday concerns. Nowadays we don't
really have to go to libraries which will take a lot of time, it will take time to
find the book, and to get a particular topic needed. Buying a book to get
information is very costly, just like going to internet cafes. Information that the
users need are just on the tip of their fingers, with the help of the technologies
of our time.

aware that students are more inclined to communicate via Discord than in conventional
face-to-face settings, and they should urge students to Indicate their availability at the
beginning of the course (Fonseca Cacho, 2020). The best use case for Discord is as a
