STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

What is the problem in question?

The plastic waste has a significant impact on land, oceans,
animal and human. More than 50% of plastics are not
degradable and only a small percentage of plastics can be
recycled.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM (cont.)

 Due to lack of land resource for landfilling and

incomplete incineration exposing toxic substances
which are harmful to health causing environmental
pollution.

 Therefore significant amount of plastic waste can

be reprocessed and environmental pollution
controlled by converting plastic waste to useful
products (foot mats).
OBJECTIVES OF STUDY

What are the objectives we are hoping to achieve?

To pretreat plastic waste

To degrade the plastic waste by subjecting it to high temperature

To develop foot-mat from the degraded plastic waste

 To characterize the foot-mat for its physical, chemical and
mechanical properties.
SIGNIFICANCE OF STUDY
How important is this research ?
 The rapid increase in the amount of
environmental waste calls for concern, other
methods of and processing of post-consumed
plastics are useful but the use of thermal
process would be promising and optimal
because plastic waste would be converted to
useful products, plastic waste managed and
environmental pollution equally controlled.
LIMITATION OF RESEARCH

The study is limited to converting plastic

waste to foot-mat using thermal process
and as well characterizing the foot-mat.
Though plastic waste can be converted to
other useful products.
PLASTICS
What are plastics ?

 Plastic is a high molecular weight material that was

invented by Alexander Parkes in 1862. Plastics are
originally composed of polymers. The term polymer means
a molecule made up by repetition of simple unit. (Babiker
et al., 2014)
What are plastics recycle codes?
ABOUT FOOTMAT

 A foot-mat is a flat, usually rectangular but sometimes

oval, object, usually placed immediately outside or inside
the entrance to a house or other building, to allow people
to easily scrub or wipe the soles of their shoes before
entering.
 Footmats are usually made from tough, long-lasting
material such as coir, palmyra (palm) fibres and stalks,
nylon, rubber, cloth, or aluminium and other metals.
ADDITIVES FOR PLASTICS
