INTRODUCTION
• Ethanol is an organic compound, it is a two carbon alcohol with chemical formula
C2H5OH produced by fermentation of biomass.

• Bio ethanol has the tendency to reduce carbon emission when compared to
gasoline.

• Feedstock used for the production of ethanol has been classified into: sugar
containing material(sugarcane, sugar beet), starchy materials (cassava, rice, corn,
wheat, etc) and lignocellulosic biomass(cane bagasse, corn stalk, switch grass).

• The conversion of starch into ethanol involves two processes which are
sacharification and fermentation.

• False yam belongs to a family name icacinaceae, it is found growing in the

southern region of Nigeria ,it has a high concentration of carbohydrate( starch)
which ranges from 85.56 - 93.31 %.
STATEMENT OF PROBLEM

• Expansion of biofuel production has coincided with the recent sharp

increase in prices for food grains, oilseeds, cassava, and vegetable oils

in united states, Europe and south America.

• Practically all biofuels are produced from feedstock that could be used

to produce food .

• The study seeks to use a non-edible plant for the simulation for

ethanol production
AIM AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this study is to undergo a simulative study for the production of ethanol from

false yam.

The objectives are as follows:

• To investigate the effect of process variables such as temperature, reduced sugar

concentration and time.

• Determination of the most optimum operating condition.

RELEVANCE OF THE PROPOSED
STUDY
An insight into the study will:

• reveal that false yam has an economic value as it contains important composition for

ethanol production.

• provide a unique approach through the combination of process simulation with

response surface methodology to develop empirical model for the chemical processes.

PROPOSED DESIGN MATERIALS

• Simulation tool: Aspen plus

• Optimization tool: Design Expert software

• Reference material.
METHODS(PROCESS DESCRIPTION)

The ethanol production process to be studied would comprise the fermentation of

glucose under the action of yeast to produce ethanol and carbon dioxide as by-

product. The parameters for the fermentation process(temperature, time and reduced

sugar) would be used to optimize .
