Business Director

Salary: c£27,000

Reporting to: Chief Executive/Artistic Producer

Location: Visible Fictions is based at 11 Bothwell Street, Glasgow. Travel across Scotland and internationally will be required.

Visible Fictions creates vibrant, high quality and accessible theatre for young people and adults alike. From Broadway to schools in the
Highlands our work has inspired and entertained audiences across the world, always aiming to challenge, excite and thrill. No two Visible
Fictions performances are alike but all guarantee an equally memorable and powerful experience.

Alongside our critically acclaimed professional performances, we produce dynamic education and participation projects which also enthuse
all who connect to them, helping participants to discover their own artistic potential and inspire their own learning.

Both at home and abroad we have collaborated with many theatres and have recently created a new production with The Children’s
Theatre Company, Minneapolis. We have also created work with BBC’s Panorama and co-produced with BBC Scotland for BBC Radio 4.

Visible Fictions has a core team of four. In addition we employ c.50 freelance actors, artists, stage managers and technicians during the
year.

The company receives Flexible Funding from the Scottish Arts Council and was delighted to be awarded an increase for the latest funding
period, 09/10 – 10/11. Additional income is generated from touring (venue fees), local authorities, charitable trusts and foundations, the
lottery and sponsorship.

We are now seeking a dynamic and creative leader with vision and business flair and strong fiscal management to join the company as
Business Director.

Whether from the theatre sector or another background, you will use your talents and knowledge to manage the company, generate
income and build partnerships to secure sustainability and growth, enabling Visible Fictions’ bold and pioneering artistic programme to
flourish.

Business Director Job Description & Person Specification

Main Purpose

The Business Director will be responsible for managing the company, income generation and strategic partnership development.
They will manage the company and securely align art and business to fulfill the artistic vision of Visible Fictions.
This is the second most senior post within the organisation working closely with, and reporting directly to the Chief Executive, who is also
the Artistic Producer.

Key Tasks

• Work closely with the Artistic Producer and core team on the delivery of the artistic programme (professional and participative).

• In consultation with the Artistic Producer, set expenditure and income targets for project budgets and allocate and oversee the
management of these budgets by core staff.

• Manage all financial aspects of the company’s core activities, including preparation of management profit and loss accounts, quarterly
accounts and cash flows whilst seeking investment opportunities.

• Be responsible for the overall financial health and improvement of the company, reporting directly to the Artistic Producer.

• Provide Management Reports and Financial information in liaison with the Artistic Producer for all Board and Management Meetings
the Scottish Arts Council.

• Liaise with the Company Accountant, General Manager, Bookkeeper to prepare for year end submissions and formal end of year
accounts ensure that all relevant company records are maintained accurately and keep abreast of legal financial requirements..
• Advocacy, promotion and development of Visible Fictions at local, national and international level, including representation of the
company to funding bodies, governments, stake holders, the media and commercial interests.

• Research, develop and secure partnerships for artistic, social and commercial collaboration, including co-producing opportunities and
local authority relationships.

• Identify and act on all new funding opportunities and the preparation of all funding applications to achieve the business plan, in
consultation with the Artistic Producer.

• Line manage the core team and responsibility for human resources including appraisal, training and staff development

• Monitor and ensure compliance with all legal and contractual obligations.

• Assist the Board and Artistic Producer in ensuring that the company complies with its obligations to OSCR and Companies House

• Ensure that the company complies with its obligations as an Approved ITC Manager.

Person Specification

The Person Specification of the successful applicant will ideally include:

• A number of years of proven experience in a management environment in a senior role


• Excellent fiscal and entrepreneurial skills
• Proven ability to generate funds from a range of public and private sources
• Demonstrable experience of building successful, sustained partnerships
• Excellent managerial skills
• Sound interpersonal skills
• Highly effective communicator both written and oral
• Resourceful and creative thinker
• Computer literate
• Able to work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends.

Desirable

• Network of national and international theatre contacts – both administrative and creative
• Knowledge of industry regulations governing contracts and health and safety
• Good motivator
• Multi-task oriented with a keen ability to prioritise
• Demonstrable co-producing experience
• Knowledge of young people’s arts activity in Britain and overseas
• Clean driving licence
