Air NZ Hijacker Now Flies With Them

The man at the centre of Air New
Zealand's first hijacking has been
granted residency here - and regularly
flies with the airline he once held up.
Amjad Ali hijacked an Air NZ 747 on
the tarmac at Nadi Airport in Fiji on
May 19, 1987, carrying six packets of
dynamite.
He let the 105 passengers - mostly
Japanese tourists en route from Tokyo
to Auckland - off the plane, but held
three crew hostage in the cockpit for
six hours.
The hijacking ended when a flight
engineer whacked him on the head
with a bottle of duty-free whisky, and
the pilot leapt on him to stop him
lighting the six-second fuse on one of
the packets of dynamite.
The incident happened just five days
after Sitiveni Rabuka's military coup
against Fiji's newly elected, and Indiandominated, Labour government.
Ali, a Fijian Indian, demanded asylum

in New Zealand, and the release of 27

Cabinet members, who were all being
held in custody.
He was convicted only of taking
explosives on a plane, and was given
a suspended sentence. He later became
a Fiji MP.
This week, 27 years after the hijacking,
he confirmed to The Dominion Post that
he was granted permanent residency in
New Zealand in 2009.
He now spends his time between Fiji
and Auckland, where the bulk of his
family lives, and often flies between
the two on Air New Zealand.
His wife had earlier received residency
and his son was born here. "As for my
criminal record, I declared it and left it
to authorities."
Immigration NZ said it could not
comment on individual cases for
privacy reasons, but did supply a list of
reasons why people could be denied a
visa.

These included someone being jailed

for five or more years, or 12 months
or more in the past decade; people
previously being removed, deported, or
excluded from New Zealand or another
country; known terrorists; or people the
immigration minister believed could
be a security risk.
The office of Jonathan Coleman, who
was immigration minister when Ali
was granted residency, said that the
case did not come across his desk. It
did not want to comment further.
Labour immigration spokesman Trevor
Mallard said the hijacking probably
should have ruled Ali out of getting
residency.
Because of the controversial nature of
the case, it should at least have been
run past the minister, he said.
Wellington immigration lawyer John
Petris said that people could get
residency if they had minor convictions,
such as drink-driving.

"I don't know the specifics [of this

case] but, on the face of it, for someone
with serious convictions it would be
difficult."
Air New Zealand would not comment
on flying a former hijacker on its
planes, citing "privacy and security
reasons".
"An individual's eligibility for carriage
with the airline is based on factors
such as compliance with aviation
security regulatory requirements,
Civil Aviation requirements and our
conditions of carriage," it said in a
statement.
Pilot Graeme Gleeson, one of the three
men held hostage by Ali, said this
week that, while he did not condone
the hijacking, he was sympathetic to
Ali. He caused no injuries to anyone,
or damage to the plane.
"I could understand his motives. I

could understand the Indian reaction to
what was happening."

Wife And Children Of Man Killed Elections Office Works On Voter

In Fiji Boat Crash Return Home
List
The Fijian Elections Office is still
working on its first provisional voter
list.
Supervisor of Elections Mohammed
Saneem says time has been spent to
clean up the voter registration list
from which the voter list would be
drawn up.
The process includes identifying and
crossing out registered voters who
have died since the first phase of
Electronic Voter Registration (EVR)
in 2012.
Elections Supervisor Mohammed
Saneem says the process is to ensure

Father-of-three Mark Hardaker, who died in a boating accident in Fiji

A Sydney woman and her three
children have returned home after her
husband died in a high-speed boating
accident off the coast of Fiji.
Mark Hardaker, 40, was celebrating his
wife's 40th birthday at the Mana Island
Resort and Spa when he decided to take
a fishing tour. He never came back.
Fijian West police say Mr Hardaker,
from Toongabbie in Sydney's west, was
on a boat with three other men when
another vessel slammed into them at a
high speed last Thursday.
Fairfax Media understands the boat
that crashed into Mr Hardaker's boat
was driven by a local operator and had
been carrying too many people at the
time.
Mr Hardaker's widow, Vanessa, and
their children flew home the following
day.
Mr Hardaker's sister-in-law described
him as a doting father who loved his
wife.
Mark is the most amazing thoughtful

selfless person I will ever know in my

life, Alana Rice wrote on Facebook.
He adored my sister and forever [sic]
loved his children, she said.
My sister was there for her 40th bday
celebrations tommow [sic] and is now
flying home alone with 3 children.
Mr Hardaker's step-mother Gay
Bookallil said she was devastated by
the loss.
We are absolutely devastated and
cannot begin to express how sorry we
are for our much loved daughter-I-law
Vanessa and grandchildren Georgia,
Sam and Jake, she posted online.
Fijian West police spokesman Naina
Ragigia said the other people on board
Mr Hardaker's boat had received
treatment for a number of injuries.
He also said the company operating the
vessel had never been involved in an
accident before.
A Department of Foreign Affairs and
Trade spokeswoman confirmed the
death.

FNPF Plans Commercial Building

In Suva City
The Fiji National Provident Fund
has revealed plans to construct a new
commercial building in Greig Street in
Suva City.
Chief executive Aisake Taito confirmed
the funds intention to demolish the
existing building which houses the
famous Suva Book Shop and a few
other shops in order to construct the
new building.
He said this new commercial building
would house retail outlets, eateries and
offices.
The fund intends to begin this project
in the next few months, Mr Taito said.
This project will be formally launched
after the tender process is finalised,
where all the necessary details of this

project will be made available to the

members and the public.
Existing tenants
Century Cafe and Yees Restaurant
which were housed in the building
have already been closed. The building
also houses two second-hand clothing
shops.
Mr Taito said the fund has been in close
consultation with the existing tenants
from the past year and these tenants
were aware of the new development
plans.
Existing businesses have been advised
and they will relocate when the project
gets underway, he said.
Mr Taito said a locally-based consultant
has been chosen to oversee the project.

the FEO has not only a clean voter list

but also a most accurate one for the
September 17 election.
So we are currently working with the
registration authorities to obtain the list
of these persons and to actually mark
them on the roll as deceased, Saneem
said.
Once we have done that then we will
be able to release the first provisional
list of voters to the public from which
they can find out where they have been
designated to vote on polling day.
The list will continued to be revised
leading up to the election.

ABC Newsman To Cover

September 17 Poll

Australian Broadcasting Corporation

(ABC) correspondent Liam Fox is in
the country for two weeks to conduct
interviews on how the country is
building up to the September 17
General Election.
Fox,
a
Papua
New
Guinea
correspondent for ABC, was at the
University of the South Pacific where
he shared his media experiences with
journalism students at the university.
Fox said apart from being assigned
to cover the build-up to the election,
he was also interested in finding out
whether reports of a blanket ban still
placed on the Fijian media was true.
"I'm also here to see what the media
environment is all about," he said.
"I think it's pretty common knowledge
there have been concerns that the
media is not fully able to do its job in
an impartial and objective manner.
"So once again talking to both sides of
the argument, people who say that's the
case and those that say no that's not the
case."
Fox said although he was not able to talk
to Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret)
Voreqe Bainimarama, he managed to
interview Minister for Social Welfare,
Women and Poverty Alleviation Dr
Jiko Luveni and the Supervisor of
Elections, Mohammed Saneem.
"I'm here for the elections, to see what
the political climate is like, to see the
preparations for the elections to speak
to both people who are supportive of
the government, people who are critical

of the government," he said.

"To gauge what people think about, if
the elections are going to be free and
fair, to see both sides of the argument.
"Also to speak to opposition parties how
they are campaigning and if they are
facing any difficulty in campaigning."
The result of his findings will be aired
by the Australian media organisation in
a week's time and Fox said part of his
assignment was to interview those who
made up the government, to see how
government policies were addressed
and how were they being implemented.
"There seems to be a general feeling
that the Prime Minister (Rear Admiral
Bainimarama) will win, a lot of people
support him and that is interesting
from an Australian point of view so
yeah, we are just talking to as many
people as we can to see what the
situation is," he said
Fox was also part of the media
group accompanying the SODELPA
when the latter visited Bau Island to
seek permission from Bau chiefs to
campaign.
"It's been good, I've been able to speak
to so many people, some NGOs, some
government people, some journalists,"
he said.
"I haven't gone outside of Suva except
to Bau Island with SODELPA; there
isn't much time in this trip to go out of
Suva and to speak to people outside of
Suva."
He hopes to return to Fiji on September
17 to cover the General Election.

Businessman Arrested Over

Stolen Property

Police have arrested a 40-year-old

businessman after he bought more than
$50,000 worth of stolen jewellery.
He was arrested in Nausori. He bought
the gold jewellery for $52,000 from an
unemployed 17-year-old boy.

The businessman has been charged

with receiving stolen property and
conversion.
Police are again appealing to the
public to refrain from buying stolen

Medical facilities remain one of
government's critical area of concern.
Bainimarama said his office has
been assessing service in the medical
services and have concluded that
reforms are needed.
Public medical service delivery does
not only relate to the ratio of doctors
to patients but the attitude of medical
staff towards their clients who are both
out and inpatients," he said.
It includes the level of compassion,
empathy and sensitivity shown by
our medical staff. It includes creating
medical facilitates that are clean, well

in the public health system.

"Given the close monitoring by my

He reiterated government's objective to

We rely on the civil service not just to
keep the country running, but also to
help the national leadership anticipate

Meanwhile, the leadership model

places emphasis on honesty, integrity,
professional ethics and service that
people working in the public service
must render to all Fijians and the
communities.
Bainimarama called on all civil servants
that the document would equate to

action.
"It is up to you to set high standards of
integrity, transparency and dedication
that others can follow. To lead by
example," he said.

Ballot Paper Design Won't

Matter: Shoe Shiner

A 25-year-old man who shines shoes to

put food on the table for his family says
he is not concerned about the design of
the ballot paper that will be used for the
September 17 election.
There have been a lot of criticisms
directed at the Fijian Elections Office
and the government recently on the
design of the ballot paper with some
factions saying it will confuse voters
because it only has numbers and not
party symbols that will allow voters to
identify with and choose accordingly.
However, according to Sevesei
Baikeirewa who has registered for
the 2014 Election, the design is not
important saying that what matters is
that the government that will come into
power attends to people's needs.
I really do not know of the changes,
I thought it was similar to the past
ballot papers where we mark the party
symbols," he said.
I think this one will be much easier
but I think what matters most to us is a
government that will come in and see
to our needs."
He said life has become hard in recent

years.
Like other shoe shiners along the
streets of Suva, taking up work as a
shoe shine boy was forced on them
because they could not finish their
high school education or pursue higher
education due to financial constraints.
"So shining shoes has become our
form of employment because we
are unable to find work. It helps us
put food on the table for the family,
so like every other worker, we need
some support as well. We hope the
government that will come into
power will acknowledge our work as
a form of employment and source of
livelihood for our families.
"For us, our concern has been not
having a proper shelter to work from
especially on rainy days. Most of us
are forced to stay home when it rains
because we do not have proper shelter
and that means going without some
things at home those days.
"We can't find work elsewhere because
we don't have the qualification. This
work we do, shining shoes is our source
of income."

New ATR To Arrive Soon

Preparations are underway by Fiji
Airways subsidiary Pacific Sun to
receive its brand new ATR 72-600
aircraft early next month.
This is also when the domestic and
regional carrier will be officially
rebranded as Fiji Link.
Fiji Airways Group managing director/
chief executive, Stefan Pichler, said
the arrival of the larger ATR 72-600
aircraft would mark the beginning of
their fleet modernisation plan for Fiji
Link.
Another brand new ATR 42-600 aircraft
will likely enter the fleet in November,
allowing one of the existing 500-series
ATRs to exit the fleet. Finally, a second
brand new ATR 72-600 will be here in
December, exiting the second current

ATR 42-500, he said.

Training for pilots
Eleven Pacific Sun pilots are
undergoing a complete difference
course training.
Pacific Sun general manager, Shaenaz
Voss, said: Preparations are well
underway for the transition to Fiji
Link, especially with the addition of a
larger ATR aircraft type to our fleet.
Our ATR Fleet Captain Manu Rajappa
completed the difference course in
Singapore and the other pilots are
doing the same.
The pilot corps will be ready to being
operating the ATR 72-600 aircraft as
soon as it beings commercial flights in
mid-June.
Ms Voss said there are two sets of

training and include differences

training from a 42-500 to 72-600
series, flight simulator and various
ground courses.
Flight simulator slots are very
limited because of the number of 600
simulators available around worldwide
and also the heavy demand for pilot
training from the ever growing ATR72600 operators, she said.
Our training plan has worked out
as scheduled and we appreciate the
support of CAAF in bringing this into
fruition.
A Senior Cabin Crew supervisor has
been trained in New Zealand, and all
other Cabin Crew will complete their
ground training and will be ready for
commercial flights mid-June.

Children as young as 11 in Nabulini smoking marijuana

Nabuluni Village headman Naibuka
Tarasese says children as young as 11
years old in his village are addicted to
marijuana.
He made the shocking revelation to
highlight the seriousness of the illicit
drug problem in his district.
He believes it is not confined to his
village only but in other villages also.
He raised his concerns in the wake of a
drug raid in Nabulini by the Police the
previous week.
He said a crime committee has been set
up by the Tailevu Province to address
the drug problem and raise public
awareness.
Mr Tarasese said children as young as
11 were smoking marijuana and this
was something they would need to
combat.
We want to protect our village
especially young girls and our women
and young boys from painting a bad
picture of our village,
Children from 11 years old and youths

are smoking marijuana and they are

really addicted to it, Mr Tarasese said.
The problem had existed for 16 years,
he said. He has just been installed as
the new village headman. Mr Tarasese
said his top priority was to eradicate
the drug problem.
He heads the villages Crime
Committee and believes its about time
to end the problem.
After we formed our crime committee
we decided to take all the people who
are planting marijuana leaves to task,
he said.
Only a few of the villagers are
planting it and are hiding it from us.
We are working closely with the Fiji
Police Force in our campaign to stop
this crime.
He said their aim was to provide drug
awareness workshops for the villagers.
We want to tell them the bad effects
marijuana will give them if they
continue, so we want to stop them now
before it is too late, he said.

Licence Breach
A LEADING local motor vehicle
dealer is seeking legal advice to place
a stop order on the cancellation of
its authorised motor vehicle dealer
(AMVD) licence by the Land Transport
Authority.
LTA had confirmed on Monday it
had cancelled Nativa Motors'AMVD
licence following "evidence of
unscrupulous motor vehicle dealings".
LTA spokesman Iliesa Sokia said
the LTA board made its decision to
cancel the licence following numerous
complaints against the company by
members of the public.
Nativa Motors general manager
Rizwan Ali said they were not given
a chance to respond to the claims of
selling those defective vehicles.
"If we are selling these defective
vehicles, why is LTA passing them in
the first place?" Mr Ali said.
"We are bringing in cars according
to the rules and regulations of the

government and if we are bringing in

these vehicles why pass it in the first
place?
"We think we are being victimised
by this and we are leaving this to our
solicitor for a stay order to be put into
the cancellation of the licence."
Meanwhile, Mr Sokia said information
gathered revealed "Nativa Motors had
breached and did not comply with the
terms and conditions of the AMVD
licence issued as well as the company's
habitual sale of defective vehicles".
"Complaints by members of the public
regarding the sale of defect vehicles
were taken seriously by the board
and after deliberating on the findings,
the board in its sitting on February 14
,unanimously agreed to cancel their
licence," he said.
"The decision to cancel is also in
pursuant of Section 55 and Regulation
32 of the Land Transport Vehicle
Registration and Construction."

New Resource Centre Ready In

Ra

The unwavering effort by Bainimarama

8
Government to increase economic
opportunities in rural communities
has led to the development of a new
infrastructure in Ra which is completed
and ready for opening.
The new Nativi Womens Resource
Centre in Nativi village, Nalaba
district in Ra has been built with a
funding of $27,000 from the Ministry
of Social Welfare, Women and Poverty
Alleviation.
During her official visit to Western
Division last week, Minister Dr Jiko
Luveni and her team paid a monitoring
visit to the project and were amazed
to see the centre being displayed with
handicrafts and items made from kuta.
Nativi Womens Club president, Uliana
Nabole said the Centre will boost their
income generating and also encourage
the use of local resources that are
available in abundance.
The village has a population of 300
and there are 74 women in this village
who depend on subsistence farming and
selling handicrafts to earn money for their
families. In previous years, we didnt
have a place to conduct our womens
meeting or even organise trainings and
do weekly activities. We had written
directly to the Ministry requesting to
have such a facility and were amazed
with the quick responses received.
Some of the women are able to earn
$200 to $300 a month and thus the core
product for this centre would be kuta.
Now given the new Centre, women
will be able to make more Kuta and
even market it in Lautoka and Suva.
The women have already been trained
on making different patterns of kuta
through a workshop that was organised
by the ministry of itaukei affairs, Mrs
Nabole said.

Freedom To Choose

The 2009 Crimes Decree which

criminalises prostitution can be
challenged in court as it is not in line

Speaking at a convention on the

Sera Karuru said sections criminalising
prostitution had a good chance of being
revoked because they were not in line
with the Constitution.
Ms Karuru said section 32 of the
2013 Constitution gave any person
the freedom to choose his or her own
means of livelihood.
"Therefore, if a person or woman

prostitution, it is well within the limits
of the Constitution and any legislation
that limits a person's freedom to

she said.
"The recognition of women's right

"Fiji is a signatory to this convention
and has implemented it."
Ms Karuru said so far the sections
criminalising prostitution in the 2009

in Fiji's courts since the inception of

PDP Faces Problem In Selection

Of Candidates

Peoples Democratic Party President

Lynda Tabuya
The Peoples Democratic Party said
they are facing some problems in
selecting their candidates for the
September 17th general elections.
Peoples Democratic Party President
Lynda Tabuya said the party has done
its second round of advertising but they

have not received many applications.

The biggest problem we are facing
is not a lack of candidates but really
people who are prepared to step up
to make themselves known publicly
that they want to be a candidate
for our party and you know its
unfortunate but thats how people
generally feel good. We have people
in the civil service, weve got people
in high ranking positions, we have
business people that are just a little
wary moving forward to declare their
interest. So we think that the best time
to do this and an influx of candidates
will really be more realistic closer to
the elections.
Tabuya also said the party will need
around 150 to 200 thousand dollars to
campaign for the elections.
According to Tabuya, at least 200 to
250 thousand dollars would enable any
party to have a good campaign.
She added they are relying on
membership dues and other donations.

Qarase Calls On PM To Disclose

Details Of The Ministers Salaries

Former Prime Minister, Laisenia

Qarase is now calling on Prime
Minister, Voreqe Bainimarama to do
the honourable thing and disclose the
details of the salaries of Ministers, the
mode of payment and other relevant
details.
Although Bainimarama has stated that
the people of Fiji will know his salary
when he declares his income, assets
and liabilities after the registration
of the proposed FijiFirst, Qarase said
Bainimarama does not have to wait for
the party registration.
He also said people want to know
whether the Ministers are being paid
single annual salaries or multiple
salaries.
Qarases comments come just a week
after Bainimarama stated that he is not
being paid a salary of $1.7 million.
Bainimarama told us that the Social
Democratic and Liberal Party and the

United Front for a Democratic Fiji

were allegedly distributing flyers in
the North which contained misleading
information about his salary.
SODELPA and the United Front say
they are not behind the distribution of
the flyers.
Earlier this week, Bainimarama said
that he is looking forward to the
registration of the proposed FijiFirst
because it will give him an opportunity
to tell all Fijians what the proposed
party can offer as a government.
He said it will also give him an
opportunity to dispel the many untruths,
misinformation and fear mongering,
the politics of the old that is currently
being carried out by the existing four
political parties.
Bainimarama said the proposed
FijiFirst intends to campaign with
honesty, sincerity, love and affection
and without any pretentions.

Language Courses To Promote

Friendship

The launch of Chinese language

courses at Lautoka Zhonghua School
last week will further enhance bilateral
cultural and educational exchanges.
Chinese ambassador Huang Yong said this
would promote friendship between Fiji
and China and contributed significantly to
the diversified development of the school.
"Being established in 1930, Lautoka
Zhonghua School is one that enjoys the

longest history," he said.

"When I came to attend the annual
awarding ceremony of Lautoka
Zhonghua School for the first time in
November 2012, I noticed that there
were no Chinese courses taught due to
various reasons.
"Ever since then, my fellow colleagues
at the Chinese Embassy and I have
never stopped our efforts."

Bainimarama Assures Justice For

All

Government is committed to ensuring

that all Fijians have equal access to the
justice system.
And Prime Minister Rear Admiral (Ret)
Voreqe Bainimarama said ensuring the
services of the Legal Aid Commission
were available in every town and city
around the country was a priority.
Speaking at the opening of the Legal
Aid Commission office in Sigatoka, he
said the expansion of services would
continue.
"I've been informed that the Savusavu
and Navua offices have been completed
and I am pleased to announce that I
will shortly be officiating the opening
for these two offices," he said.

"Also, three more offices are being

planned for Nasinu, Taveuni and
Tavua, which we anticipate to open by
July this year."
He said with the opening of the
Sigatoka office, residents no longer had
to travel to Nadi or in some cases as far
as Lautoka, to seek legal aid services.
"Not only was this time consuming, it
was expensive. And unfortunately at
times it prevented Fijians from seeking
the justice they rightfully deserved.
"With this new office, we are removing
the obstacles of time, distance and
expense. Equal access to justice should
mean just that justice that is readily
available to all."

A BRITISH couple who oversee a

charity called the Children of Fiji claim
they are laying the foundations for the
construction of a new bridge over the
Korotari River in Vanua Levu.
For years, children living on the other
side of the river have had to cross it
every morning and afternoon, on their
way to school and back.
Peter and Margaret Long, from
Cattistock in England, wish to help
build the bridge.
"Over 100 children risk their lives
every day. Building this bridge will
ensure the safety of these children,"

said Mrs Long in an interview with the

British media.
According to British media reports,
much of the couple's time on their
latest trip to Fiji was spent in meetings
attempting to secure the support of
various government agencies and the
sugar industry.
"We are in negotiations with the
government of Fiji and have had
personal messages from the Prime
Minister pledging his support," said
Mr Long.
"We have also been pledged support from
sugar companies both in Fiji and the UK."

Farmers Identified For Fresh

Ginger Export To Australia

Up to 50 farmers have been identified

and registered to supply fresh ginger
for export into the Australian market
for the first time in a few months time.
Deputy Secretary for Agriculture,
Uraia Waibuta, confirmed this.
Farmers have already been identified
as well as the processes because these
were the requirements before Australia
can approve exports as part of market
protocol, he said.
Fiji is looking forward to the newly
matured ginger market that has recently
been approved by the Australian
Government for exports.
We are looking forward to sending
the first consignment to Australia come
end of August or even in September.
Mr Waibuta said the Ministry of
Agriculture is now following up on the
existing crops on the ground and whether
its doing well or if theres any disease.
We need to follow some other strategy,
to identify other farmers to make up for

the loss that can be done by diseases if

there are any outbreaks, he said.
Australia did their Import Risk
Analysis Audit in October 2013 and
on February 28, 2014, Fiji received
a letter of approval from Australias
Department of Agriculture to export
ginger.
Fijian product interest
Mr Waibuta noted a lot of countries are
looking to Fiji for different types of
products.
He said challenge now was how well
the farmers in Fiji can meet the demand
from overseas.
Also how can we closely work with
our stakeholders in putting all these
products together, he said.
This is a challenge and will continue
to pursue to build a public private
partnership towards strengthening
farmers and our stakeholders.
Also meeting the demand is for
whatever products we have overseas.

FNPF Plans Commercial Building

In Suva City

The Fiji National Provident Fund

has revealed plans to construct a new
commercial building in Greig Street in
Suva City.
Chief executive Aisake Taito confirmed
the funds intention to demolish the
existing building which houses the
famous Suva Book Shop and a few
other shops in order to construct the
new building.
He said this new commercial building
would house retail outlets, eateries and
offices.
The fund intends to begin this project
in the next few months, Mr Taito said.
This project will be formally launched
after the tender process is finalised,
where all the necessary details of this

project will be made available to the

members and the public.
Existing tenants
Century Cafe and Yees Restaurant
which were housed in the building
have already been closed. The building
also houses two second-hand clothing
shops.
Mr Taito said the fund has been in close
consultation with the existing tenants
from the past year and these tenants
were aware of the new development
plans.
Existing businesses have been advised
and they will relocate when the project
gets underway, he said.
Mr Taito said a locally-based consultant
has been chosen to oversee the project.

High Court Refuses Chaudhry

Stay Application
Fiji Labour Party leader Mahendra
Chaudhry's application for a stay
and suspension of his sentence for
exchange control violations has been
refused by the High Court in Suva.
Justice Paul Madigan said that staying
of sentences are only possible in
civil cases. There was no legislative
provision for criminal sentences to be
stayed.
He said the application was thus not
appropriate.
The application for stay is refused,
he said.
On Chaudhry's request for the sentence
to be suspended, Justice Madigan said it

only applied to terms of imprisonment

and not on fines.
The ruling means he will need to pay
the fine of $2 million by June end or
face a 15-month prison sentence.
It also means that even though he is
expected to pursue an appeal against his
conviction and sentence in the Court of
Appeal, he may not be able to take part
in the September general election.
The former Prime Minister and
Minister for Finance was convicted on
three counts of breaching the Exchange
Control Act by keeping funds in an
Australian bank account without
authorisation.

Ranger Anare Draiva who was with
the Royal Irish Regiment 1st Batallion
was the first Fijian fatality. He died

2006.
Almost two years later on May 2,
2008, 29-year-old Ratu Babakobau
was killed after a vehicle he was on hit
a landmine during a patrol.
In 2009, two Fijian soldiers died within
two months. Fusilier, Petero Suesue

Fusiliers died after he was shot while
on foot patrol in Sangin, Helmand. He
died on May 22, 2009. He was 28.
Less than two months later, Rifleman
Aminiasi Toge, 26, was killed in an

explosion while on foot patrol in the

A year later, Kingsman Ponipate
Tagitaginimoce, 29, and Corporal
Taniela Rogoiruwai, 32, who were part
of The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment
1st Batallion were shot while on
security patrol in Nad Ali on June 15,
2010.
In 2011, Private Joseva Vatubua, 24,

Fiji Man Charged Over Death Of

Australian Tourist

A man has appeared in a Fiji court

charged with manslaughter over the
death of an Australian tourist in a boat
collision off the South Pacific nation
last week.
Jimi Beti, 33, faces charges of
manslaughter, criminal recklessness
and negligence over the death of
40-year-old Mark Hardaker, from New
South Wales.
Mr Hardaker was returning from a
fishing trip last Thursday when a
speedboat driven by Beti, a Fijian,
allegedly crashed into his vessel.

Mr Hardaker was rushed to the nearby

Mana resort medical centre, where he
died of head injuries.
The court was told Beti was operating
the boat without a licence.
He was refused bail and remanded to
appear in Lautoka High Court on June 4.
Mr Hardaker was holidaying on Mana
Island with his family at the time of his
death.
Tourism is the nation's highest
foreign exchange earner, with more
than 700,000 Australians and New
Zealanders travelling to Fiji annually.

Suva Bus Stand Undergoing

Changes

The Suva City Council and the Fiji Bus

Operators Association have agreed
on the new $80million international
standard Suva Market and the Bus
Station design plans.
The city councils chief executive
officer, Bijay Chand, said they had in
place 11 measures to ensure pedestrians
were safe at the bus station.
We have designated and marked
walkways for pedestrians and installed
railings for the safety of pedestrians
and passengers, Mr Chand said.
He said pedestrians and peanut vendors
were happy with the safer bus stand design.
We will extend the bus station into
the Ministry of Primary Industries car
park to minimise congestion and allow

spaces for the walkways.

Mr Chand said the pedestrians now had
enough space after an increase in the
width of the bus bays.
We have installed speed humps and
we will also install proper signage to
instruct buses to slow down as they
enter the bus station area.
He said enforcement officers were at
the bus stand to help the public respond
as expected to the new changes.
We want to create awareness within
the bus station for pedestrians to only
use the walkways and not to cross
anywhere on the tarmac.
Mr Chand said all construction work
was now carried out at night for public
safety.

24 Employers Fined Over Labour

Law Breach

Fiji's Ministry of Labour recently fined

24 employers for failure to issue pay
slips to their workers.
Labour Minister Jone Usamate said the
employers were issued on-the-spot fine
of $100 each.
He said it should act as a deterrent
to other employers to refrain from
breaching labour laws.
Meanwhile, he has commended close to
600 employers in Fiji for implementing
the national minimum wage (NMW) of
$2 per hour.
Labour inspectors visited these
employers between March and April
and did not find any case of employers
paying below the minimum wage rate,
Usamate said.

As I said on the day when we lodged
the application that we cannot campaign
now but I am eagerly looking forward to
it after the registration of the proposed
party. I look forward to it because it
will give me an opportunity to tell all
Fijians what the proposed FijiFirst can
offer as a government and it will also
give me an opportunity to dispel the
many untruths, misinformation and
fear mongering the politics of the old
that is currently being carried out by
the existing four political parties, he
said.
As Ive said, the proposed FijiFirst

Man Attacks Primary School Students With Meat Cleaver In DrugFuelled Rampage
SHOCKING footage has emerged of a crazed man attacking children with a meat cleaver in a drug-fuelled frenzy at a Chinese primary school.
One student is in a coma and seven
others injured after 35-year-old
Chen Zuihang allegedly went on a
bloody rampage through the school in
Macheng on Tuesday.
Chilling CCTV video showed the attacker
swiping wildly at running children and
walking around the playground with
blood smeared on his shirt.
The first and second grade students
were on their lunch break during the
frenzied 60-second attack.
It seems he slashed at them rather
than chopping hard, which would have
killed most of them instantly, a police
spokesman said.
The scenes of panic at the school were

indescribable. These youngsters had no

idea what was going on.
Teachers tackled the assailant with a
garden hoe before he was arrested.
As reported the alleged attacker man
was able to sneak inside the school
grounds in a delivery truck, holding the
meat cleaver behind his back.
The students were rushed to Macheng
City Peoples Hospital for treatment.
One child has been discharged, while
two others had surgery and are in a
stable condition.
Authorities said the suspect Chen
Zuihang was a migrant worker who
tested positive for methamphetamine
in a urine drug test following his arrest.

Flight Passenger Tried To Smuggle 16 Bird Eggs In The Crotch Of His

Pants, Australian Customs Alleges

Australians call tiny swimming trunks

might have new meaning after customs
officials at Sydneys airport said
Wednesday that they found 16 wildbird eggs in the crotch of a passengers
pants.
The 39-year-old Czech man arrived
Tuesday on a flight from Dubai when
customs officials selected him for
a baggage examination, Australian
Customs and Border Protection Service
said in a statement.
Officers conducted a frisk search of
the man and allegedly found 16 small
eggs concealed in his groin area, the

statement said.
There was no word on whether it was
budgies small parrots also known
as budgerigars that were allegedly
smuggled. The species has yet to be
identified.
The man, whose name has not been
released, was to appear in a Sydney
court on Wednesday charged under
environmental protection laws with
attempting to import regulated live
specimens without a permit. The
charge carries maximum penalties
of 10 years in prison and a fine of
170,000 Australian dollars ($171,000
Canadian).

Hosni Mubarak, Egypt's Former President, Sentenced To Three

Years' Jail Over Theft
An Egyptian court has sentenced
ousted president Hosni Mubarak to
three years in prison on charges of
stealing public funds.
Mr Mubarak looked on from a cage
flanked by his sons, Alaa and Gamal,
who were sentenced to four years on the
same charges. Four other defendants
were acquitted.
The court fined Mubarak and his sons
21.197 million Egyptian pounds ($3.2
million) and ordered them to repay
about 125 million Egyptian pounds of
funds the court said they had stolen.
Mr Mubarak's former intelligence
chief, Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, is poised to
be elected president next week.
The verdict may please some Egyptians
who lived through three decades of
autocracy under Mubarak, but analysts
say that businessmen still loyal to him

are still influential.

Rights groups say that abusive practices
of the Mubarak regime are alive and
well as another former military man
prepares to take the reins of power.
Mubarak has been under house arrest
at a military hospital since August
pending retrial in a case of complicity
in killing protesters during the 2011
uprising that ended his rule.
It was not immediately clear if the
three years Mubarak and his sons have
already spent in jail would be counted
toward the sentence.
Mubarak had technically been a free
man after a court ordered his release
last year following the end of the
permitted detention period, but has
since remained out of sight in a military
hospital.
He is now likely to be returned to prison.

Switzerland Rejects World's

Highest Minimum Wage

Swiss voters have overwhelmingly

rejected a proposal to introduce what
would have been the highest minimum
wage in the world in a referendum.
Under the plan, employers would
have had to pay workers a minimum
22 Swiss francs (about $25; 15; 18
euros) an hour.
Supporters said the move was necessary
for people to live a decent life.
But critics argued that it would
raise production costs and increase
unemployment.
The minimum wage proposal was
rejected by 76% of voters. Supporters
had argued it would "protect equitable
pay" but the Swiss Business Federation
said it would harm low-paid workers in
particular.
The issue was the most prominent of
several referendums held last Sunday.
A controversial plan to buy 22 Swedishmade Gripen fighter jets for the Swiss
Air Force was narrowly rejected by
53% of voters.
Meanwhile, 63% of voters backed
a plan to impose a lifelong ban on
convicted paedophiles working with
children.
But it was the trade union-backed
proposal to ensure that an annual salary
was not less than 32,000 ($53,600) a
year that provoked the most debate.
Unions argued that the measure was

necessary because of the high living

costs in big Swiss cities such as Geneva
and Zurich.
The unions are angry that Switzerland
- one of the richest countries in the
world - does not have a minimum pay
level while neighbouring France and
Germany do.
They argue that surviving on less than
4,000 francs a month is not possible
because rents, health insurance and
food are all prohibitively expensive.
The minimum wage in Germany will
be 8.5 euros an hour from 2017.
A key element of the campaign in
favour of a minimum wage was the
argument that the Swiss welfare
system was being forced to subsidise
businesses which refuse to pay a living
wage.
But business leaders and the
government said low unemployment
and high standards of living for the
majority showed there was no need for
change.
Small businesses, in particular Swiss
farmers, were especially worried that
being forced to pay their staff 4,000
francs a month would price their
products out of the market.
Most of Switzerland's low-paid
workers operate in the service industry,
in hotels and restaurants, and the
majority of them are women.

Man Jailed For Secret Filming In

Bathroom

A man will spend at least 16 months

in jail for secretly filming his partner's
family and other people in a bathroom.
The Adelaide District Court heard the
concealed camera captured intensely
personal images of 12 people, two of
them children.
More small cameras also were found
around the property of the Golden
Grove man, 75.
The court was told the man started

filming because of his infatuation with

one of the victims, a young girl.
Judge Sydney Tilmouth says the
man had abused the loyalty and trust
of the victims and his actions were
demeaning.
The offender cannot be named as the
victim's identity needs to be protected.
The man's jail sentence of two years
carries a non-parole period of 16
months.

Mcdonald's 'Terrifying' New

Mascot

Remember Ronald McDonald, Grimace

and the Hamburglar? They're among
the characters that have appeared in
McDonald's marketing campaigns over
the years. Now there's a new character
in town. But it's received a less than
lukewarm welcome on social media.
On Monday, the fast food outlet
introduced its latest mascot in the US
by tweeting: "Say hello to our newest
friend, Happy!" The red, smiling box
with big teeth is designed to "bring fun
and excitement" to kids meals and help
them to make healthier food choices.
But Happy triggered a less than happy

response on Twitter and has already

been dubbed "McScary".

Brayden Denton, 5, Gets Superheroes

Funeral After Cancer Fight

Indiana boy's funeral included pallbearers dressed as comic book characters

A five-year-old boy in Indiana who
died of a rare form of brain cancer
was given a superheroes sendoff in
Indiana, with pallbearers dressed as his
favourite comic book characters.
The six pallbearers at last week's
funeral in Newton County were
dressed as Superman, Spider-Man,
Thor, the Incredible Hulk, Iron Man
and Batman.
The little boy from Kentland died of
an aggressive form of brain cancer on
May 8, and his mom, Staci Denton,
decided to give him a sendoff he would
have appreciated.
Brayden's uncle, Cory Denton, who
was dressed as Thor, helped carry his
nephew's casket.
"It was hard, but I did it for him," he
told CBS affiliate WLFI-TV.
"The whole time I saw them carrying
Brayden, he was probably up there
going, 'This is so cool,'" Staci Denton
told the New York Daily News. "That

was his world. That's what he would

have wanted."
Brayden loved all the comic book heroes
and collected their action figures, but
Spider-Man was his favourite, she said.
Last year, thanks to the Make-A-Wish
Foundation, her son met that superhero
at Universal Studios in Florida.
Brayden had been diagnosed with
diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma
(DIPG), a rare form of brain cancer, in
April 2013. He died at Riley Hospital
for Children in Indianapolis after a
battle that included undergoing 30
rounds of radiation.
His family wrote in his obituary
posted online that he was the "typical
American boy" who would watch the
Spider-Man movies "over and over."
They said he enjoyed all sports, but
"absolutely loved baseball."
Doctors gave him the OK to play on
a T-ball team last June even though he
was undergoing cancer treatments.

Lisa Ray To Meet The Pope

Canada-born Indian actress Lisa Ray
is visiting Vatican City to meet the
pope.
The actress, who was applauded for
her work in "Kasoor" (2001), met the
pope Tuesday.
"Visiting the Pope today. It's just a
coincidence that the tastiest gelato is in
the Vatican...," she tweeted.
The 42-year-old was diagnosed with
cancer of the bone marrow in June
2009. Later in 2010, the actress opted
for a stem cell transplant and announced
her treatment was successful.

(or who graduated from a Canadian

PhD program within the past 12

months) and meet these criteria.
No matter what category above you
apply to, you must meet ALL the
minimum requirements below.
B) Minimum requirements
Work experience
If your application is eligible to be
processed, we will then assess it to see

Quebec Man Who Slapped His 13-Year-Old Daughter

The 74-year-old man had pleaded guilty to manslaughter in the death of his
13-year-old daughter Noutene in October 2010

A Quebec man who slapped his teenage

daughter to death after she failed to
finish her chores has been sentenced to
60 days in jail.
Moussa Sidime is expected to serve
his time two days a week over 30

weeks, plus two years of probation. He

was reportedly emotional during the
sentencing on Wednesday in court in
Longueuil, south of Montreal.
The 74-year-old man had pleaded
guilty to manslaughter in the death of

his 13-year-old daughter, Noutene, in

October 2010.
The court heard Sidime struck her
because he didnt like how shed
completed a chore and because she had
been disrespectful.
A pathologist testified at his
preliminary inquiry that the two slaps
Sidime delivered to Noutenes face did
not leave a mark. But the slaps caused
her head to move in such a violent
motion an artery in her head ruptured
and oxygen was cut off to her brain.
She died in hospital two days later.

It was Sidime who called 911 himself

after finding the girl unconscious
minutes later.
The Crown was seeking a prison
sentence.
Sidimes lawyer had argued for
leniency, calling the death an
exceptional case.
According to the media, Quebec
Court Judge Richard Marleau said
he allowed the 60-day sentence to
be served in a discontinuous fashion
because of Sidimes age and his good
reputation in his community.

said Andy Koster, executive director
of the Childrens Aid Society of Brant.
We dont believe that bringing her

The Childrens Aid Society intervened

Mr. Koster said he met with the girls

This is a family thats been under a lot

Makayla is suffering from a unique form
of Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia,
the most common form of childhood
cancer. Under proper treatment, it has
a survivability rate as high as 80% for

The girls disease went into remission
after undergoing an initial 11 weeks of
chemotherapy at McMaster Childrens
Hospital. Treatments were planned
to continue but she asked to stop
chemotherapy after she experienced
severe side effects such as nausea, loss
of appetite and weight loss.
In an email to the National Post, the
hospital said health-care professionals
have a legal obligation to alert
authorities when they believe a child
may be at risk.
Mr. Koster said Makaylas voice had

Two Canadians Accused In

Grandparent Scam Targeting
U.S. Woman

An Ontario woman and a Quebec man are both facing charges in connection
with what police are calling a grandparent scam.
An Ontario woman and a Quebec
man are both facing charges in
connection with what police are calling
a grandparent scam targeting an
elderly American woman.
Kingston, Ont., police say the intended
victim who lives in Illinois
received a phone call from a man
claiming to be a Kingston lawyer, who
said her grandson was in a car accident
and needed her to send $8,400 to help
pay for repairs and court costs.
The woman recognized the scam but
played along to obtain additional
details, which she gave police.
Detectives determined the address
given by the suspect to send the money
was a vacant Kingston residence listed
for sale, and a dummy package was
sent to the address without any money

in it.
Police say a woman was later seen on
the vacant property and was arrested
earlier this month when she was found
to have the dummy package in her
possession.
A 32-year-old Kingston woman
whose name is not being released
is charged with one count of fraud
over $5,000, as is 32-year-old Jackson
Benjamin Roy of Vaudreuil-Dorion,
Que., near Montreal.
Police allege that the woman was
simply the interceptor of the package
and that Roy is the organizer of the
fraud scheme.
The investigation is continuing and
detectives say there may be additional
victims in the United States and
Canada.

Tony Fisher Fired As Target

Canada President

Target has fired the president of its

troubled Canadian operations, Tony
Fisher, and is replacing him with a 15year U.S. company veteran.
The nation's third-largest retailer
announced Tuesday that Mark
Schindele, 45, who was senior vice
president of merchandising operations,
will now run the Canadian operation.
The changes are effective immediately.
Schindele has played a key role in
launching new store formats like Target
Express and CityTarget in the U.S.
"One of our key priorities is improving
performance in Canada more rapidly
and we believe it is important to be
aggressive," the parent company's
interim CEO John Mulligan said. "We
have a committed team who is focused
on delivering an outstanding shopping
experience to our Canadian guests and
getting our performance on track."
Target, based in Minneapolis, also said
that it will be naming a nonexecutive chair
in Canada. In its newly created advisory

role, the chair will provide counsel and

support to the president of Target Canada
to ensure all strategies and tactics align
with the Canadian marketplace.
Target is trying to fix its flailing
operations in Canada, its first foray
outside the U.S. It's also trying to
recover from a massive data breach in
the U.S. that has cost it customer trust.
Under the leadership of Fisher, 38, the
company opened more than 100 stores
north of the border, but shoppers have
complained that prices are too high,
and the Canadian stores have been
wrestling with inventory problems.
As a result, sales have been weak and
the company recorded a loss of nearly
a billion dollars in its first year.
The news comes two weeks after
Target announced the abrupt departure
of CEO Gregg Steinhafel.
Target's net income fell 34.3 percent
to $1.97 billion in the year ended Feb.
1. Revenue slipped 1 percent to $72.6
billion.

B.C. Murder Suspect Calls TV Station

Suspect calls TV station to say he has no plan to turn himself in because he wants to enjoy the summer
Five days after he went on the lam, a
B.C. fugitive suspected of gunning
down a man in a domestic dispute
called a Vancouver television station to
proclaim his defiance.
Im not handing myself into the
cops, because Im not getting out
when I get arrested, so they have to
do their job to find me, said Barry
McQuarrie last Sunday, speaking to
the CTV Vancouver newsroom from
an undisclosed location.
RCMP investigators have reviewed
broadcasted portions of the recorded
conversation, and believe it was a
legitimate call from the 33-year-old
suspect.
They have to do their job to find me
That call has value, in different levels
to us, so were following up with
it, said Sgt. Adam MacIntosh with
the RCMPs Integrated Homicide
Investigation Team (IHIT). Its in
essence a tip for us.
Just after midnight on Tuesday, May
13, the sound of gunfire brought police
to a Surrey townhome. They found a
badly injured Gregory Quesnelle.
Originally from Southern Ontario,
and described by police as having a
criminal record, Mr. Quesnelle died
soon after being taken to hospital.
Police quickly suspected the murder
had been a targeted attack spurred by
an earlier domestic dispute at the
same residence.
In what they called an extraordinary
step, the police released Mr.
McQuarries name and photo to the
public.
Mr. Quesnelle was reportedly dating Mr.
McQuarries former girlfriend, and the
two had clashed only a few days before
the murder. I had a problem with him
about a week ago; I didnt go back and
kill him, Mr. McQuarrie told CTV.
The fugitive also appeared to take
umbrage with the frequent police
warning that he is considered armed

Barry McQuarrie
and dangerous.
Im just trying to stay out of jail.
I just want you to know, Im not Mr. McQuarrie has not been charged
armed, Im not dangerous, Im not out with the murder, but he is currently
there hurting no one, he told CTV. arrestable on a series of unrelated

warrants, according to an IHIT

statement.
The suspect has a long history of
violence and property theft in the
Lower Mainland area, and in 2005
was convicted in connection with the
shooting of a 35-year-old man who
ended up making a full recovery.
That time, Mr. McQuarrie similarly
spent time as a fugitive as police tried
to track him down.
This is a dangerous man who, over the
past couple of weeks, has become more
and more irrational and violent, Cpl.
Dale Carr with the Langley RCMP said
of Mr. McQuarrie in 2005.
The murder of Mr. Quesnelle came just
two months after Mr. McQuarrie was
acquitted of a 2011 break-in. Officers
found a latex glove at the scene
containing Mr. McQuarries DNA,
but a judge ruled that the evidence
was unable to prove Mr. McQuarries
participation in the crime beyond a
reasonable doubt.
Im not armed, Im not dangerous
Last week, initial police reports said that
Mr. McQuarrie had fled the scene of the
murder in a stolen 2010 Kia Borrego.
Twenty four hours later, however, the
Borrego was found torched at a Surrey
industrial complex in what police
suspect was a deliberate attempt by Mr.
McQuarrie to cover his tracks. Police
now believe he may be driving a stolen
2008 Toyota Highlander.
Right now, our goal is to locate him
and bring him into custody as safely as
possible; both for him, for us and the
public, said Sgt. MacIntosh.
In his phone call with CTV, Mr.
McQuarrie did not rule out turning
himself in, but said he would try to
hold out until fall.
Im going to enjoy as much summer
as I possibly can, he said. When the
time comes that the summer is over,
maybe I might hand myself in
maybe, if I make it that long.

Langley Moms Stopped For Impaired Driving In Rush Hour

In two separate incidents, RCMP stopped drivers suspected of impaired driving with kids in the car

Langley RCMP seized the cars and

driver licences of two women after
spotting them allegedly driving
impaired with their daughters in the
car.
The two separate incidents happened
half an hour of each other during last
Friday's rush hour in what police call a
disappointing coincidence.
Langley RCMP made the first stop
around 5:40 p.m. Friday when an
eastbound vehicle on 88th Avenue was
spotted with the driver using her cell
phone.
When RCMP officers looked inside the
vehicle, the 32-year-old driver appeared
to have been consuming alcohol.
An open bottle of wine was in the front
passenger area and the driver's eightyear-old daughter was in the rear of the

vehicle.
That driver's vehicle was impounded
after she failed a roadside screening
test.
A half hour later, police heard about a
collision again on 88th Avenue where
a vehicle was stranded on the centre
median just west of Walnut Grove
Drive.
In that incident, a 37-year-old Langley
woman appeared to have been
consuming liquor. Her seven-yearold daughter was seated in the front
passenger seat.
Langley RCMP Cpl Holly Marks
said police were disappointed by the
coincidence.
"I'm hesitant to compare how bad it
is you endanger yourself and other
people but you make it worse when

you endanger your own children. The

reality is you're endangering all of
these people," she said.

The ministry of children and family

development have been notified in
both cases.

Retirement Planning? Keep Calm And Carrying On

BY:
Vicky V. Prasad
The primary source of retirement
income for the majority of Canadians
who are nearing retirement will be
personal savings. This is especially
important because evidence is showing
that government pensions will not be
enough. But things haven't been easy
for investors because of the market
turbulence of the last several years.
It's for this reason why it's particularly
important today to keep your emotions
in check. The experts at Desjardins
Financial Security suggest that creating
a basic plan and staying the course is
the best strategy.
Starting a basic strategy
If your retirement is 10 or more years
away, now is a good time to put a plan
in motion that will really pay off down
the road, even though you might have
other priorities. And if retirement is in

a mere five years or less, it's time to get

serious because the clock is ticking.
But don't be discouraged. Depending
on your own particular situation, you
can make up time by following this
simple action plan or applying some of
these ideas to your current plan:
First, identify your retirement goals
and financial needs based on:
Your target retirement age

The Most Important Financial Lesson

If you havent, the episode explores the
excess of professional athletes in the
late 90s and early 2000s, chronicling
the tales of several athletes who
managed to amass and subsequently
blow tremendous fortunes.
Its compelling in the way a car wreck
is: It commands your attention even
though you know its oh-so horrible.
I highly recommend you checking it
out if you havent already, as its an
excellent lesson in the importance of
financial literacy.
While watching this special, I couldnt
help but wonder what I would do if I
found myself in a similar situation and
became an overnight millionaire. Its
easy for us wallowing in five-figure
(or, in my case, no-figure) mediocrity
to play armchair quarterbacks and
scoff at how different things would be
if we were the ones with the money.
We would never blow it all that inanely
and quickly, but, in reality, that just
isnt true.
Somewhere there exists a list of all
the lotto jackpot winners whove ever
managed to lose their entire fortunes,
and its definitely a list thats several
reams thick. In fact, an entire cottage
industry has recently popped up to
counsel folks whove experienced
sudden financial windfalls. Youd think
that once someone handed you a check
for several million dollars, the last
thing youd need is counselling, but
youd be surprised.
Like many people, I play the lottery,
occasionally. The lottery invites
its fair share of criticism from the
mathematically inclined, but the
people who blindly say playing the
lotto is stupid are just as simpleminded as those who think that

Punishment Or Positive
Discipline?

No parent's proud to be a 'shouter', but

in the heat of the moment it's hard to
do otherwise. But getting your child
to do as he's told in the right way
just needs a little preparation, and
they'll need important negotiation and
compromising skills, too.
Whats wrong with punishment?
Harsh discipline or punishment
is about imposing control through
authority and power. It tends to be
reactive, often in the heat of the
moment. There is no discussion,
reasoning or negotiation; the phrase
because I say so is often decreed!
When overly punitive consequences
are imposed for bad behaviour, it can
often be counterproductive; children
may become resentful, angry and
vengeful. Think about how you would
feel if a boss or friend started shouting
orders, lecturing you or threatening
you. Would it make you keen to oblige
- or keen to get even?
Not only does overly harsh discipline
cause resistance and retaliation, it can
easily encourage lying. A child will
focus on covering up misdemeanours
to avoid punishment, rather than
changing the actual behaviour. Finally,
remember that punitive consequences
fail to teach your child self-control.
A child who is always reprimanded
without discussion, fails to develop
problem solving skills or an inner
voice that helps them think through
behaviour before acting.
What is Positive Discipline?
Positive discipline is about helping
your child to learn positive values and
develop social skills for life. It may
help to think what am I aiming for
as a parent? Getting your child to do
what theyre told right now may seem
critical in the heat of the moment, but
unquestioning obedience is probably
not on your list of top adult qualities
you aspire to. Instead, most parents
aim to raise a young person who is
responsible, but also adaptable; adept at
compromising and negotiating, skilled
at communicating and able to flexibly
think their way out of problems. These
are exactly the kind of traits positive
discipline encourages.
But a word of warning, dont confuse
positive discipline with letting your
child do whatever he or she wants!
Children whose parents are overly
relaxed or permissive often struggle
with poor self-control and have
difficulty committing to decisions.
Positive discipline involves parenting
in a warm, kind and respectful way
with fair, firm boundaries and relevant,
reasonable consequences.
How do I use Positive Discipline?
1. Positive discipline must be given
in the context of a warm, positive and
loving environment. The more positive

attention and encouraging comments

you give your child, the more they will
respond to disapproval. Look out for
all examples of desirable behaviour
and comment approvingly, such as
wow, Daisy, you waited so quietly
when I was on the phone, that was so
patient of you!
2. Choose your battles. Constant
nagging and criticism makes children
tune out. Decrease the number of
commands given to those that are most
important. Ignore minor misbehaviour
and focus on the things that really
matter.
3. When you make requests use a
polite, respectful and positive tone.
Ask yourself if someone spoke to me
in this way, would I feel like obliging?
Avoid: sarcasm; threats; criticism;
labeling; teasing; and shouting.
4. After making a request, allow time
for your little one to respond. If you
keep nagging them, they will learn to
ignore you the first few times you ask
for anything.
5. When making requests, state what
you want to happen, not what you want
to stop.
6. Every time your child complies with
a request, praise them. You can use star
charts, reward charts and special treats
to further reinforce specific pre-agreed
behaviours.
7. If your child doesnt do as you ask,
ask again more firmly. This gives
your child a chance to change their
response. If they still dont respond,
you may chose to use impose a
relevant consequence. So if your little
one carries on throwing a toy at their
sister, after being asked to stop, take
the toy off her for half an hour.
8. If your child gets upset and loses
control of their feelings, dont dismiss
their concerns this will probably
make them more frustrated and more
likely to act up. Instead, show concern
and empathy, for example hey David,
you were really looking forward to
going swimming, so no wonder youre
so disappointed it was cancelled.
9. Show them an appropriate way of
expressing feelings.
10. Use the when, then technique
to teach your child the impact of their
behaviour on other people, for example:
when you call people names, then they
get sad and feel hurt." "When you say
sorry, I feel ready to have fun again.
11. With older children a problem
solving approach can be really
effective.

be because of the bacteria in urine, a
study showed.
Contrary to popular belief, urine is
not sterile and the bacteria in it may
be associated with overactive bladder
(OAB) in some women, the study noted.
"The presence of certain bacteria in
women with overactive bladder appear
associated with OAB symptoms,"
said Evann Hilt of Loyola University
Chicago in the US.
Approximately 15 percent of women
suffer from OAB and an estimated 4050 percent of affected women do not

One possible explanation for the lack
of treatment response may be the

without OAB using a new technique
known as expanded quantitative urine
culture (EQUC).
EQUC was able to find bacteria that
were not identified by the standard
urine culture techniques typically used
to diagnose urinary tract syndromes.
Using EQUC, the researchers
discovered that the bladder bacteria
in healthy women differ significantly
from those in women affected by OAB,
suggesting that certain bladder bacteria
may play a role in OAB.
"If we determine that certain bacteria
cause OAB symptoms, we may be

Grind Teeth At Night? Try Yoga

Do you clench and grind teeth while

sleeping? That could be owing to stress
and yoga and meditation may help,
experts say.
While many people may not realise
it, teeth-grinding is not just simply
annoying, it could also be causing
headaches, jaw pain and wearing down
of your teeth.
"Called 'nocturnal bruxism', teethgrinding occurs as a response to the
teeth not fitting quite right," said Ohio
dentist Matthew Messina from the
American Dental Association.
Stress is a known aggravator of
bruxism.
When you are stressed, you gain
energy that needs to be released

somehow - and for certain people,

that "somehow" comes in the form of
muscle contractions.
"Everyone responds to stress in a
different way - what stresses you out
may stress me differently," Messina was
quoted as saying by Huffington Post.
If you have an existing bite issue and
you throw in some stress, the body may
find clenching and grinding as a relief,
he added.
Meditation, yoga and mindfulness
could be your ticket to less grinding,
said Messina, as these techniques help
lower stress and reduce tension and
muscle activity.
Also, cut out the caffeine and alcohol
and avoid chewing gum, he noted.

Walking May Help Prolong Life

Of Kidney Patients

Suffering from kidney diseases? Take

up walking at the earliest as researchers
have found that walking may help
patients with kidney disease prolong
life and reduce the risk of needing
dialysis or a kidney transplant.
"A minimal amount of walking - just
once a week for less than 30 minutes
- appears to be beneficial, but more
frequent and longer walking may
provide a more beneficial effect,"
explained Che-Yi Chou from China
Medical University Hospital in Taiwan.
Physical inactivity is common among

patients with chronic kidney disease

(CKD).
During the study, the researchers
studied 6,363 patients. Just over 21
percent of patients reported walking as
their most common form of exercise.
During follow-up, the researchers found
that those who walked were 33 percent
less likely to die and 21 percent less likely
to need dialysis or a kidney transplant.
The more patients walked, the more
they benefited, the study, appeared in
the Clinical Journal of the American
Society of Nephrology, noted.

Want Shinning Teeth? Eat Apple,

Chew Gum
Teeth whitening treatment has become increasingly popular in recent years,
thanks to modern lifestyle. But it is now possible to achieve one at home.
Eating apple on daily basis and chewing gum is beneficial when it comes to
maintaining white pearlies.

Everyone wants to look and feel their

best. Keeping this in mind, Peta Leigh,
a teeth whitening expert, offers tips for
achieving a bright white smile.
Eat your way to whiter teeth: Foods
that are firm or crisp are known to help
clean teeth as they're eaten. Apples are
considered to be 'nature's toothbrush'
and are a great way of cleaning teeth
on the go or at lunch time when you are
at work and unable to brush your teeth.
Other choices include raw carrots,
celery, and popcorn.
Get a calcium boost: This may come as
a surprise to many but cheese is also
known for helping to maintain healthy
white teeth. Although very fattening,
cheese speeds the neutralization of
acid and remineralisation of enamel.
Wash away the stains: Water is not only
essential for overall wellbeing, it is also
vital for great oral health. Water acts as
a natural cleaner and has the power to
wash away bacteria and residue left on
the teeth after eating. So be sure to drink
a glass of water after every meal.
Neutralise acid: Chewing gum is
also very beneficial when it comes to
maintaining a white smile. Chewing

gum helps to clean teeth mechanically

by removing debris, and it stimulates
production of saliva, which increases
your saliva's ability to neutralise acid
and remineralise your enamel. This
ultimately strengthens teeth.
Quit smoking: Lifestyle choices
can also influence a natural white
smile with smoking being one of the
biggest causes of teeth decay and
discolouration. The nicotine and tar in
the cigarette result in teeth darkening,
losing their natural white.
The little extras: Flossing removes
some of the staining between teeth,
making your smile instantly look
whiter. Try to floss several times a week
as this will not only improve the health
of your gums, you will also notice your
smile looking brighter.
See the light: Dark coloured foods
are also notorious for causing
discolouration in the naturally white
teeth enamel. The best thing to do is try
to avoid these foods and drinks such as
coffee, balsamic vinegar and red wine,
but if you do want to treat yourself,
drink a glass of water after as this will
help minimise staining.

Two Large Meals Better For Diabetic's

Health Than Six Small Ones
A new study has revealed that eating
two complete meals in a day rather
than six small meals with the same
calories content helps more in curbing
weight and blood sugar in people with
type 2 diabetes.
The authors of the research said that
eating only whole breakfast and lunch
helps in reducing body weight, liver

fat content, fasting plasma glucose,

C-peptide and glucagon and improved
OGIS, more than the six meals split
into same caloric restriction.
The study also suggested that eating
larger breakfasts and lunches might
be more helpful than six smaller meals
during the day, for the type 2 diabetic
patients who are on a limited calorie diet.

Green Tea And It's Magic

Green tea and its benefits are known worldwide. This hot brew is extremely
healthy and has many benefits.
Here's why you should switch to green
tea.
Anti-aging
Chemicals called catechin that are
present in green tea significantly
improve the activity of SOD, and so
provide a large boost to the body's ability
to fight the affect of free radicals. Many
of the affects of aging, particularly on
the skin, are caused by a buildup of free
radicals in the body, which can damage
and aging of your body's cells.
Oral care
Green tea is a big natural source of
fluoride, so this in combination with its
anti-bacterial effects provides a great
natural way to help strengthen your
teeth, prevent cavities and help reduce
bad breath.
Benefits skin

Green tea and its extracts are

commonly used to prevent and treat
a number of skin diseases, including
skin cancer. Topical applications of
green tea extracts also help protect
against UV exposure from the sun, and
are used to reduce the impact the sun
has on the health of your skin. Many of
the benefits found for green tea, only
occur after drinking it for an extended
time, months or years. It also detoxifies
the body causing the skin to glow and
clears the complexion.
Aides in weight loss
Several studies have hinted that green
tea provides a boost to exerciseinduced weight loss so if you're aiming
at reducing weight or that abdominal
paunch then consider adding green tea
to your diet.

Drinking Four Glasses Of Wine In One Night Can Be Detrimental To

Health
Scientists have revealed that even
having only "one too many" glasses of
wine can cause significant harm to the
body.
According to the researchers, women
drinking four or more alcoholic drinks
over two hours (five or more for men)
risk causing bugs to leak from the gut,

sending levels of dangerous toxins in

the blood soaring, as reported.
The study by the University of
Massachusetts
Medical
School
has found that that bacteria called
endotoxins can leak into the blood,
which can cause fever, inflammation
and tissue destruction.

confusing yourself. Someone you met
a couple of months ago at an official
function will contact you with some
work or business proposal. You should
consider fresh offers dispassionately

with prospects of handsome gains.
Your personal life takes an interesting

Capricorn

You can look forward to some major

changes in your work as well as in
location. Any change or move that
takes place now will be for the better
and will have long term repercussions
on your career and personal life. Hence
even though all seem to be working out
fine, you need to remain extra cautious
not to make any mistake. One thing
that you must bear in mind is that not

should only act as an observer and
when the time comes take the right

in job or location on your own. Your
personal life is quite satisfactory with

you getting full support from your

Mala Sinha (born November 11, 1936
in Calcutta, India) is a Nepali Indian
actress who has worked in Hindi,
Bengali and Nepali films. Recognised
for her talent and beauty, she went on
to become a popular leading actress
in Hindi films from the early 1950s
until the late 1970s. Sinha has starred
in over a hundred film productions:
popular ones include Pyaasa (1957),
Dhool Ka Phool (1959), Anpadh, Dil
Tera Deewana ( both 1962), Gumrah
(1963), Himalaya Ki God Mein (1965)
and Aankhen (1968).
During the Sixties, Mala Sinha was the
heartthrob heroine of Bollywood. She
ruled the hearts of millions of Indian
young men. The charm she had over
fans during that period is incomparable
and her fans still swear by her.
Those were the days when women
used to go to cinema theatres carrying
handkerchiefs with them, and used to
weep when they saw their favourite
heroines enduring hardships on the
silver screen. Mala Sinha was one of
those heroines.
Those were the days when a mere
smile on the lips of such matinee idols
and a twinkle in their eye used to keep
teenagers awake through the night.
Lets take a look at the rise of
this graceful actress who was just
phenomenal in her acting.
Mala Sinha was born into a Nepalese
Christian family and named Alda.
During her school days the actress was
teased by her friends and was called as
Dalda. Frustrated Mala changed her
name to Mala.
She played an innocent child artist in
numerous Bengali films namely Jog
Biyog and Dhuli. It wasnt too late
for her to be noticed by a renowned

film director Ardhendu Bose who saw

her in a school play.
Not wasting any time he approached
her father and persuaded him to

allow Mala to be the lead in his flick

Roshanara in 1952.
It was just the beginning for the lady.
A couple of films later, Mala had to go
to Bombay on a shoot, where she met
Geeta Dutt, who introduced her to film
director Kidar Sharma. Kidar readily
cast her in his flick titled Rangeen
Raatein.
Later the actress finally made her
debut in Hindi flick named Baadshah
opposite Pradeep Kumar.
Mala had a beautiful vocal. She sang

for All India Radio but never took it as

a career in Bollywood.
In 1957, Guru Dutt came up with
Pyaasa, the role was initially offered to
the beautiful Madhubala but was later
bagged by Mala Sinha, and it was a
turning point for her career.
The king of romance Yash Chopra
made his Directorial Debut with the
flick Dhool Ka Phool' and offered
Mala the lead role. The flick was a hit
and there was no looking back for the
lady.
A series of hits came her way like Parvarish, Phir Subah Hogi, Main
Nashe Main Hoon, Love Marriage,
Bahurani, Anpadh, Aasra, Dil Tera
Deewana, Gumrah, Aankhen, Hariyali
Aur Rasta and Himalaya Ki God Mein,
among others.
The legendary stars like Amitabh
Bachchan, Dharmendra, Sunil Dutt,
and Sanjay Khan who were the
newcomers during those periods
worked with Mala Sinha. The actress
never hesitated to share the screen with
such young superstars.
The actress found her love in the
newcomer CP Lohani with whom
she appeared in a Nepali flick called
Maitighar. The two married soon
thereafter and had a daughter named
Pratibha.
Her marriage cant keep her away from
work as she starred opposite Uttam
Kumar and the versatile Kishore
Kumar. Age factor never became a
hindrance, as she gracefully opted
roles suited her and was last seen in
1994 Zid.
Her beautiful daughter, Pratibha, tried
her luck as an actress but could not
repeat her mother's success.
The actress was nominated several
times for the best actress at numerous
Award ceremonies, but Mala never won
a single Filmfare award throughout her
career.
But in 2007, Star screen honoured her
with the Lifetime Achievement award.
Mala Sinha now lives in Mumbai with her
husband. She will always be remembered
as a versatile actress of all time.

Arjun Rampal Turns Bodyguard

For Hrithik's Wife Sussanne

The Roy actor recently attended the screening of Hollywood action flick
X-Men: Days of Future Past along with his wifey and good friend Sussanne.
However things turned a bit ugly when the trio left the venue.
Arjun Rampal, who stepped out on
Monday night to catch the screening
of X-Men: Days of Future Past, lost
his cool when a cameraman followed
his car. Heres what happened exactly:
The Ra.One baddie, his wife Mehr
Jessia and Sussanne Roshan left
together in Arjuns car after watching
the film. Since a lot has been said about
Sussannes closeness to Mehrs hubby
dearest, the Satyagraha actor decided to
leave from the back gate of the venue.
Well, its obvious the model-turnedactor did not want to grab mediawalas
attention. But things went awry when a
camera person followed them to click
their pictures. An eyewitness told a
leading tabloid, To avoid media glare,

Arjun and Co. left the preview from the

back exit, which leads to the parking
area, and they drove out. Arjun was
behind the wheels with Mehr sitting by
his side and a woman, who looked like
Sussanne, was in the back seat. She
kept ducking to avoid the shutterbugs.
While Arjun tired to escape from the
paparazzi, his efforts went in vain
it seems. Arjun took a right from
the preview venue followed by a car
with just the driver in it. A media car
followed him. As soon as the actor
stopped the car at the turning of the
lane, the cameraman got out and started
clicking pictures. Arjun got upset over
this and chased him, hurling abuses,
added an eyewitness.

After featuring in films like 'Masti'

it seemed like the actor had his fill.

So it came as a surprise to hear the buzz

Million Dollar Arm**** (PG)

Slow Pitch!
Culture shock comes to a pair of young
Indian boys who find themselves on
the fast track to success in Million
Dollar Arm. Dreams die hard and this
new film from Disney hits all the right
notes. Warm, friendly and based on a
true story audiences at Cineplex Odeon
Theatres throughout B.C. will be richly
rewarded witnessing this inspirational
story.
Life I. The fast lane is nothing new for
the high flying super sports gent Jay
Bernstein. Cut for. The Jerry MacGuire
mould television John Hamm (Mad
Men) has got this callous character
down pat. Unable to sigh the big one
and left hung out to dry Bernstein does
what only a desperate man can do:
throw a Hail Mary. Against all odds
and his better judgment our city boy
heads out to a place thousands of miles
away: India.
Assignment number one is to find

By Robert Waldman

a kid or two any kid, capable of

playing baseball in the majors. You
can contrast the poverty of India with
the decadence of modern Los Angeles
which adds reality and gravitas to the
story. Adding some crusty humour as
an aging baseball fixture sent down
to help find that monster throwe or
Academy Award winning Alan
Arkin (Argo).
Here the filmmakers have fashioned a
wonderful family film that sports fans
and others will be able to gravitate too.
The drive and determination of the
kids trying to win the talent contests
are almost palpable. Even the loose
romance our legal beagle faces back
home is well developed as is his
shifting personality when priorities are
put to the test.
Smart and engaging Million Dollar
Arm is a great story about the underdog
with winning performances all around .

Pamela Anderson Reveals History Of Childhood Sex Abuse

'Baywatch' star Pamela Anderson has
revealed that she was molested at the
age of six, raped when she was 12 years
old and gang-raped just years later.
The 46-year-old actress made the
revelation at the launch of her charity,
The Pamela Anderson Foundation, at
the Cannes Film Festival.
According to a UK website, Anderson
said that despite having loving parents,
a female babysitter molested when she

was six.
She also revealed that once when she
went to a pal's boyfriend's house, his
older brother decided to teach her
backgammon, which led to a back
massage leading into rape, adding that
the man was 25 years old and she was
12, as reported.
She later added that her high-school
boyfriend once decided that it would be
funny to gang-rape her with six friends.

Mel Gibson Has Turned Into

Colonel Sanders
MEL Gibson, what happened?

Well, we know about all the ...

unpleasantness that happened. The
drunken arrests, the anti-Semitism, the
tawdry breakups and leaked abusive
voicemails.
But when did you become the spitting
image of Colonel Sanders?
Just take a look at Gibson, 58, as hes
appeared at this weeks Cannes Film
Festival, where hes promoting The
Expendables 3.
The manic grin. The swept-up grey
hair. The pointed, troll-like beard. Its
a long way from the matinee idol good

Get Rid Of Dark Skin Patches

With Home Remedies Like Milk
And Lemon!

We love naturally dark skin. However,

at times, prolonged exposure to bright
sunlight or polluted air, ageing or
hormonal fluctuations may cause
patchy skin darkening making your
skin look unhealthy. While cosmetic
treatment is a probable option, it is
generally not recommended except in
a few extreme cases; by the regular
use of a few simple home remedies,
you can deal with darkened skin in the
comfort of your home.
Lemon Juice
One of the simplest and safest bleaching
agents you will find, lemon juice can
work wonders for darkened skin. The
ascorbic acid or vitamin C present in
lime juice acts as an antioxidant and
this action helps to lighten the colour of
the skin. All you need to do is squeeze
the juice from half a lemon and apply
this with a cotton ball onto the area
where the skin has darkened. Or you
could even directly rub a cut lemon
over the affected area to allow the juice
to stick to the skin.
Leave on for at least an hour and then
wash with water. But make sure you
avoid exposure to sunlight when you
have applied the lemon juice onto your
skin or your skin will only get darker
than before.
Besides using lemon juice alone,
you could also try combining it with
turmeric powder or tomato juice. Mix
about 3 teaspoons of lemon juice with
1 teaspoon of turmeric powder; apply
this paste and leave it on for half an
hour; then wash with water. Or make
a puree from 2 medium-sized tomatoes
and mix this with 4 tablespoons of
lemon juice and apply this to darkened
skin for about 20 minutes.
Milk
Milk contains a compound called lactic
acid and this has been found to help
with lightening the colour of skin. Use
a cotton ball to apply a little raw milk
to the darkened skin; allow to dry and
leave it on overnight; wash the next
morning with a little warm water.
Yogurt Remedies
Since it is made of milk, yogurt also
contains lactic acid and this gives it
bleaching properties. You can also
add in a little lemon juice and some
oatmeal into the yogurt to make a thick

paste and apply to the darkened skin.

According to Ayurveda, the regular
application of buttermilk (the thin
liquid left behind after removing the
cream from milk in the form of butter)
on darkened skin can help keep the
skin cool and refresh it.
Oranges
Like lemon juice, orange juice also
has bleaching properties and can be
used to lighten skin tone. Some people
also find good results when they use
a paste prepared by combining about
two tablespoons of orange juice with a
pinch of powdered turmeric. This paste
can be applied onto the skin before
going to bed and washed off the next
morning.
Honey
When honey is applied to the face
either alone or in combination with
ingredients such as lemon juice and
olive oil, it helps to remove the layer
of dead cells on the outermost layer
of skin. As a result, your skin appears
brighter and fresh than before. Besides,
honey also contains enzymes that help
to make the skin soft and glowing. If
you have sensitive skin and want to try
honey on your face, make sure you try
it out elsewhere say on the arm and
check how your body reacts to it before
applying it to your face.
Even better than using honey alone is
to combine it with an equal quantity
of lemon juice and milk powder and
a little paste obtained from soaked
almonds.
Aloe Vera Gel
The gel from the aloe plant can help
to reduce the skin tone. Cut the outer
layers of the aloe leaf, squeeze out the
thick jelly-like substance and apply
this to the area of darkened skin. Leave
it on for about 30 minutes and then
wash off with water.
Although these home remedies
are effective, they take longer than
cosmetic bleaching products to act.
So, it may seem as if you have been
trying the remedy for days together but
there are no noticeable results. Most
of these remedies will take regular use
for a month or two to show effects and
therefore, it is vital to have patience
when you use home remedies to get rid
of skin darkening.

Things Women Wish Men

Men are indeed from Mars and women, from Venus.

The two sexes are as different as chalk our man displayed with increasing

How To Know If You Are Madly

In Love
There are obvious signs that can tell you how deeply in love you are.

Feeling the blues, always?

Well, yes this could be the first sign
to tell you when you are feeling
the blues all the while and have
goose bumps and butterflies in your
stomach for no reason at all or for
silly reasons.
You keep blushing all the time
This again is a sign that tells you 'you
are smitten for the first time' when
you see yourself in a very good mood
and your friends always spot you
daydreaming and blushing and getting
lost in your thoughts. That's definitely
mush and that's definitely the crush you
need to explore.
Your heart longs for that person
Your eyes go around hunting for just a
glance and you will be satisfied even

if you could see the person for even a

second and that gives you maximum
satisfaction. This does not end here as
the more you get to see the person, the
more the heart longs for the person.
This is surely first love.
You experience things for the first time
If you feel the excitement is new, the
feelings in your heart are the ones you
have never experienced before and
there are hundreds of emotions running
hither and thither inside. You're feeling
ecstatic at the same time there is
anxiety brewing inside your heart that
makes you feel your heart beat like
never before - dhub, dhub, dhub, and
more dhub dhub.
Buddy, you have been smitten. Go and
get yourself a love doctor.

Things You Shouldn't Eat at a Restaurant

We asked restaurant industry insiders
which foods you should skip, whether
it's to avoid outrageous markups, food
poisoning, or germ minefields.
1. Meat with the Bone In

Small cuts of meat, like bone-in pork

or chicken breasts, are harder to cook
thoroughly because their outsides easily
char. This often translates to crispy
on the outside and raw on the inside.
Unlike undercooked beefsay, a rare
burger or a steak tartareundercooked
pork and chicken are highly dangerous
and could causes food-borne illnesses.
Plus, bone-in means less meat.
2. Iceberg Lettuce

The iceberg wedge salad is one of the

industrys biggest rip-offs.
Take into account that iceberg lettuce
is about 98 percent water, and its easy
to see why. It's marked up at least 20
times, says Peter Chastain, executive
chef and owner of Californias Prima
Ristorante. Plus, germs can hide inside
lettuces cracks, corners, and edges.
You think lemons in water are dirty?
The salads are filthy, Cannon says.
Even if restaurants do decide to wash
their greens, the lettuce is often served
soggy, which is big red flagstanding
water mixed with lukewarm, mayobased dressing is a disaster waiting to
happen.
3. Best-Sellers

You might think best-selling items

have high turnover. But to keep up with
demand, fast-food restaurants and some
other places pre-make their top sellers,
which gives these wrapped and bagged
choices plenty of time to develop foodborne illnesses. Instead, opt for the less
popular options which are more likely
to be prepared to order, says Howard
Cannon, CEO of Restaurant Expert
Witness and author of The Complete
Idiots Guide to Starting A Restaurant,
who adds, Anything sitting in holding,
covered with mayonnaise, is probably
not that great."
4. Tap Water

"One of the most dangerous items in

a restaurant is water, Cannon says,
although anything that sits between 40
degrees to 140 degrees for more than
a short time has a high potential to
harbour bacteria.
If your table is already set with a carafe
of water, or you're handed anything
warmer than ice-cold, ask for a new
glass.
5. Free Bar Snacks

Since these nuts, pretzels, and other

munchies are free of charge, restaurants
and bars often dont set out a fresh
serving for each new customer. It's like
eating out of a stranger's hand! Then at
closing time they're dumped back into
a container, to be re-poured into dishes
the next day.
6. Sauced-up Specials

To avoid running out of ingredients

during the dinner rush, restaurants often

order more food than they need. At
the end of the day, surplus ingredients
that haven't expired can turn into
tomorrows specials, disguised with
sauce.
Watch out for an expensive item used
in a way that's minimizing its flavour,
says Stephen Zagor, founder of
consulting firm Hospitality & Culinary
Resources, in Wall Street Journals
SmartMoney. Be wary of meat that's
been cut, braised, and disguised in a
pasta, stew, or soup dish.
7. DIY Grilling

Restaurants with a built-in-grill dining

table sound like fun. But: Braised
food from a steam table is fraught with
perilsneezing customers, improper
cooking, says Chastain. Leave the
cooking to the chefs.
8. Meatloaf

First, there's often more filler than meat,

but restaurants think if they drown the
dish in enough sauce and seasoning,
you won't notice.
To help sell it further, many menus use
descriptive words like homemade,
home-cooked, home-style, or
worst of all, Moms.
Dont insult your mama! Order a
burger or a steak.
9. "From-there" Seafood

Unless the joint is known for its

seafood, theres no guarantee you're
going to get what's on the menu.
While the kitchen might swap snapper
for a cheaper tilapia, many times the
distributors do a bait and switch, too.
10. Gourmet Burgers

By working in one expensive ingredient

in small batches, many customers are
cheated into believing theyre getting a
taste of highbrow fare for a relatively
low price. Beware: Most commercial
truffle oils are created by mixing olive
oil with a lab-produced chemical.
Zagat ranked truffle oil as one of the
eight most overrated ingredients,
comparing the oil to trendy fashion
labels: "its obnoxious, overpriced, and
made with cheap material."
11. Ice Cream

Unless its exotic or made in-house, its

not worth your time, money, or caloric
intake.
The idea of dropping big dollars
in a restaurant to pay for the same
brand I can get from the local grocery
doesnt make me want any, says Mark
Ladisky, senior operations consultant
for Synergy Restaurant Consultants.
12. Chicken

He who orders chicken is, in terms of

ordering outside the box, a chicken.
There is typically nothing unique
about the preparation that is worth my
attention on the menu, says Ladisky.
It's also cheap meat that gets marked
up substantially. Be bolder.

2014 Ram 1500

The 2014 Ram 1500 brings a new
turbodiesel to its class-best fuel
economy ratings; it's also tops in cabin
finish and infotainment, but lags in
towing.
The Ram 1500 remains one of our
favorite full-size pickup trucks for the
2014 model year. It already sported the
best EPA gas-mileage ratings in the
segment for its base V-6/eight-speed
drivetrain combination, and it promises
a turbodiesel model that we've driven
and liked. As of this writing, though,
the diesel is not yet available in
showrooms and hasn't been rated by
the EPA for fuel economy.
Last year the Ram added a host of new
features that brought it at least into a
neat tie with Ford's F-150 for utility
and performance, with the new GMC
Sierra and Chevy Silverado closing the
gap considerably. The highlights? An
eight-speed automatic transmission,
a new air suspension, and a more
refined cabin, with a new Uconnect
Touch infotainment system and muchimproved materials and trims. At the
same time, ultimate towing and hauling
capacity fell slightly, though its ubertruck look went basically unchanged,
as it has since the days it was known as
the Dodge Ram.
Over the years, that scaled-down bigrig look has made it easy to spot the
Ram 1500 from a distance. The changes
wrought in 2013 are carried over to
2014: the grille is slightly taller than
before 2013, and the Ram crosshair
grille is now flush. The foglamps
are new, and so are the headlamps-a twin-beam projector design with
LED running lamps, turn signals,
side-marker lamps, and tail lamps.
Inside, the Ram 1500's cabin still looks
fantastic: the reworked center stack
and climate-control, multimedia and
infotainment interfaces are the best of
all trucks. We're still at odds sometimes
with the eight-speed automatic's rotary
shift knob. It's supposed to be easy to
use with work gloves, and easier to fit in
across a wide range of seating options
and layouts, but we still find ourselves
reaching for a ghost shift lever. Of
all the cabins, the Laramie Longhorn
is our favorite, with its genuine burl
walnut and plush leather.
Chrysler's Pentastar 3.6-liter V-6 is
the base engine in the Ram 1500, and
it's tuned for 305 horsepower and 269
pound-feet of torque in the full-size
truck. It's powerful enough for casual
truck users, and is rated at 17/25 mpg-18 mpg city when stop/start technology
is specified, making it the best fullsize truck by a wide margin. Its eightspeed automatic doesn't feel at all busy,
though the rotary-knob shifter takes a
while to grow accustomed to. It's now
a relevant piece of the Ram powertrain
puzzle, even before you factor in the
additional eco gold of a stronger but
lighter-weight frame (more highstrength steel), aerodynamic shutters,
low-rolling-resistance tires, and pulse-

width modulation (which improves

the efficiency of the alternator and
accessories) and a new thermal
management system. It's just not all that
strong--towing is rated a few hundred
pounds less than the V-6 F-150, GMC
Sierra, or Chevy Silverado.
New for the 2014 model year is
the excellent EcoDiesel, a 3.0-liter
turbodiesel six that make the Ram
1500 the first full-size light-duty
pickup to offer a diesel in America. It's
rated at 240 hp and 420 lb-ft, same as
it is when it's fitted in the Jeep Grand
Cherokee, and it's coupled to the eightspeed automatic. Offered in a range
of models, it's priced nearly $3,000
higher than a similarly equipped Ram
with a HEMI V-8, but fuel economy is
promised to be strikingly higher.
HEMI models now make 395
horsepower and 407 pound-feet, and
they incorporate both variable valve
timing (VVT) and a cylinder shut-off
system. A version of the new eightspeed automatic is paired with the

HEMI, though a few of the lower-cost

trims continue to carry over the sixspeed automatic. The 4.7-liter V-8?
It's finally gone. If cost is no object,
the HEMI's still the way to go, for its
muscular power and 0-60 mph times of
far less than 7 seconds.
Four-wheel drive is available on every
model, either in part-time or full-time
flavor. Tow ratings are shy of the Ford
and GM trucks: maximum capacity
stands at 10,450 pounds, while Ford
and GM trucks can hit 11,700 pounds.
The big Ram's redesigned suspension
loses no ground, and its ride quality
still stands above all its competition
for on-road smoothness. Electric
power steering is new, and it's about
what you'd expect in a work-duty
application--though on-center feel is
more than acceptable, there's almost
zero feedback beyond a few degrees off
center. The Ram's new air suspension
option enticed us on the preview tease,
but after driving it, we think there
should be some more compliance

dialed into one of its everyday driving

modes: of the five that allow best-inclass ground clearance, step-in height,
and departure/breakover angles, the
"normal" mode is tuned to lower the
truck at highway speeds for better gas
mileage, and that tends to firm up the
ride a bit too much.
Standard safety features remain strong,
with the usual airbags, stability control
with a trailer-sway system, and hillstart assist. A rearview camera is
available on all versions; rear parking
sensors can be ordered on all but the
regular-cab trucks, and front parking
sensors are new for 2014. The Ram
1500 has gotten better at crash tests
over time; it's four stars overall by the
NHTSA test, but the IIHS still calls its
roof strength marginal.
Chrysler's big 8.4-inch Uconnect Touch
screen-based system is available in the
Ram, and it can incorporate Uconnect
Access, which tethers the truck to
Sprint data services, adding on a host
of features including voice recognition,
apps, and WiFi hotspot capability.
The available navigation system offers
voice-activated features, new 3D
terrain imagery, and lane guidance,
as well as fuel-price, weather, sports,
and movie info through Sirius Travel
Link. There's also a new seven-inch
reconfigurable gauge cluster (in Sport,
Laramie, and Laramie Longhorn
models) that effectively replaces a
conventional gauge cluster and can
quickly communicate information
depending on how it's customized,
with up to three 'analog' gauges at a
time (when towing, an owner would
configure the trans temp gauge to be
in the foreground, for instance). The
Ram comes with new powered USB,
SD card, and aux-in ports, as well as
full iPod control via USB, as well as
expanded steering-wheel controls.
Other features offered in the Ram
lineup are rain-sensing wipers, powerfolding side mirrors, and a powersliding rear window with defrost. Don't
miss the innovative RamBox cargo
management system either; it's now
locked and unlocked with the vehicle's
central locking system.
It's less distinctive, maybe, than it was
when it first crashed the truck party
back in 1994--but the Ram 1500's masmacho grille and eighteen-wheeler
aesthetics still have best-looking and
gutsiest take of all the big trucks. It's
more of a visual callback to big rigs
than the straight-edged Ford, GMC,
and Chevy trucks, and doesn't have
the cartoonish quality that keeps the
Tundra at a disadvantage.
Like any of the big trucks, the Ram's
looks shift subtly as it moves between
trim levels. There are five different
grilles in all, each with its own texture
and finish, even its own name. The rear
taillamps are LED-lit, and so are the
side-marker lights, but those are the
minor updates applied to the business
end of the truck since it was still a
Dodge Ram, back in 1999.

Manchester United Hires Van

Gaal As Manager After Firing
Moyes

Netherlands coach Louis van Gaal was

hired as Manchester United manager
on Monday, tasked with repairing
the damage from David Moyes'
disappointing 10 months in charge
and reviving the fortunes of one of the
world's biggest clubs.
The 62-year-old Dutchman has signed
a three-year contract and will take
over at Old Trafford after the World
Cup in Brazil, becoming the first
United manager from outside Britain
and Ireland. United great Ryan Giggs,
who announced the end of his 23-year
playing career, will be Van Gaal's
assistant.
"To work as a manager for Manchester
United, the biggest club in the world,
makes me very proud," Van Gaal
said in a United statement. "This club
has big ambitions; I too have big
ambitions. Together I'm sure we will
make history."
Van Gaal has experience of coaching -and winning league titles -- at some of
the world's top teams, but even spells
at Ajax, Barcelona and Bayern Munich
may not prepare him for the rebuilding
job required at United.
The club has been in a state of flux since
the retirement of Alex Ferguson last
May after nearly 27 years in charge.
Moyes, Ferguson's successor, was
dismissed last month before the team
went on to finish seventh -- its lowest
placing since the Premier League's
inception in 1992.
United also failed to qualify for
European football for the first time in
24 years.
Van Gaal is likely to be handed
considerable funds to strengthen
the squad to get United back in the
Champions League, something the
club's American owners -- the Glazer
family -- weren't prepared to give
Moyes. A return to Europe's top
competition will likely be the priority,
followed by a desire to play the kind
of attacking, dynamic brand of football
expected at United but unable to be
delivered by Moyes.
United has broken the mould by
appointing Van Gaal.
In the club's 136-year history, no
previous manager has come from
outside Britain or Ireland, a common
occurrence at England's other big clubs
in recent years.
The notion of United hiring coaches in
a bid to create a dynasty -- something
Ferguson uniquely achieved -- also
appears to have ended. After spending
six years at Ajax, where Van Gaal
guided a talented young team to the
pinnacle of European football by
winning the Champions League in
1995, he joined Barcelona in 1997 for

the first of two spells -- the first lasting

three seasons and the second barely
half a year. He has since coached
AZ Alkmaar in the Dutch league and
Bayern between 2009-11.
So he may not be the long-term
manager many at United crave -Giggs, United's interim manager for
last season's final four games and one
of the club's greatest players, is thought
to be being groomed for the seat in the
future -- but the fact that Van Gaal has
won league titles with every team he
has worked makes him one of Europe's
most-respected coaches.
He has been coach of the Netherlands
since 2012, his second spell with the
national team following a stint from
2000-02.
"Everyone is very excited about this
new phase in the club's history," United
vice-chairman Ed Woodward said.
"His track record of success in winning
leagues and cups across Europe
throughout his career makes him the
perfect choice for us.
"People know him as a largerthan-life character but I have also
been extremely impressed by his
intelligence, thoughtful approach to the
role and his diligence."
He can be spiky and provocative with
journalists and hardly lacks in selfbelief, a trait which can often spill over
to make him appear arrogant. But after
the failed tenure of Moyes, United
needed a manager who commanded
respect and had a strong track record.
His job won't be easy. While United
has regressed since landing its recordextending 20th English championship
last year, rival Liverpool has improved
greatly under Brendan Rodgers and
finished second in the Premier League
this season. Chelsea, Manchester City
and Arsenal are established members
of the top group and showing no signs
of being on the slide.
The appointment of Giggs as Van
Gaal's No. 2 will satisfy those eager for
some continuity at the club following
the trophy-filled era of Ferguson.
The 40-year-old Giggs published an
open letter on United's website an
hour after Van Gaal's appointment,
praising the Dutchman's qualities
and revealing his decision to end his
playing days.
"For me, today is new chapter filled
with many emotions -- immense pride,
sadness, but most of all, excitement
towards the future," Giggs said. "United
fans I hope will share and echo my
belief that the club, the management
and owners, are doing everything they
can to return this great club to where it
belongs, and I hope to be there every
step of the way."

Canucks Officially Name Jim Benning As New GM

The Vancouver Canucks have named

Jim Benning as their new general
manager.
Benning is the first significant hire
made by new Canucks president of
hockey operations Trevor Linden,
who was handed the franchise's reins
after the team missed the playoffs for
the first time in six years following a
disastrous 2013-14 campaign.
Benning spent the last eight seasons
with the Boston Bruins, including
seven as the club's assistant general
manager.
A former Canucks defenceman during
his playing days, the 51-year-old
Benning is the 11th general manager in
franchise history -- a post he has never
held with an NHL club.
"Jim brings a wealth of hockey
experience as a builder and talent
evaluator that will benefit this team
for years to come," said Linden in a
statement. "We are aligned on how
we want to build this team and Jim's
level of commitment to building a
championship team is exciting. I

Test Event Setback Ahead Of
Brazil Tournament's Opening
Match

Corinthians and FIFA have cancelled

a test event at the Sao Paulo stadium
that will host the World Cup's opening
match and are now scrambling to
arrange another game at the venue.
Corinthians were scheduled to play
Cruzeiro at the Corinthians Arena on
May 29, but the match was cancelled
amid fears the 4:00pm (local time)
kick-off could provoke traffic chaos
in South America's biggest and often
hugely congested city.
That match has been rescheduled for

the day before and moved to a different

venue, Portuguesa's Caninde Stadium.
FIFA now says it will try to reschedule
a game for the 68,000-capacity
Corinthians Arena on June 1.
Corinthians are scheduled to play an
away match against Botafogo in Rio
that day, but the Brazilian Football
Confederation (CBF) could swap the
fixture to make them the home side.
FIFA's secretary general Jerome
Valcke confirmed the rescheduling on
Twitter.

playoff contention with three games
left in the regular season.
Benning's first order of business with
the Canucks will be to hire a new
head coach after Linden axed John
Tortorella earlier this month following
one tumultuous campaign.
Benning will also have to prepare for
next month's NHL draft and assess a
roster that Tortorella accused of being
"stale" at his end-of-season press
conference.
Apart from helping to shape a Bruins
team that defeated the Canucks in the
2011 Stanley Cup final, Benning's
managerial resume also includes 12
seasons with Buffalo Sabres, with eight
of those spent as that club's director of
amateur scouting.
Selected sixth overall by the Toronto
Maple Leafs in the 1981 NHL draft,
Benning played nine seasons with
Toronto and Vancouver, collecting 52
goals and 191 assists in 610 career
games.

Fijian Referee Misses Out On

World Cup

Fijian referee Ravinesh Kumars dream

to officiate in next months FIFA World
Cup in Brazil has been shattered by an
injury which rules him out for more
than a month.
In January, the Lomawai native from
Sigatoka was selected as assistant
referee 2 in an OFC trio led by Peter
OLeary (New Zealand).
He however did not participate in the
mandatory fitness test last month in
Zurich due to an injury suffered two
weeks before that seminar.
Kumar pulled a muscle during training
and upon check-up in Zurich, it was
ascertained that he had a torn tissue
and FIFA doctors recommended that
he be out of action for more than four
weeks, ruling out his chance.
His position in the OFC trio will be
taken by Mark Rule (New Zealand),
initially selected as a reserve assistant
referee.
Fiji FA Referees Director, Paresh
Kishore said Kumars injury was
unfortunate and he really sympathised
with him as he had worked extremely
hard to make the final cut.
We all are feeling very sad and
shattered because Ravinesh created

history by becoming the first Fijian

referee to be selected for the World
Cup. He successfully completed all the
requirements and was highly praised
by top officials.
He was looking forward to the World
Cup and even his tickets and other
documents had arrived. He tried his
best to recover in time but his injury
was serious and the doctors after their
assessment have asked him to rest and
not to take any risks.
We will ensure that he gets enough
