The suspected masterminds are both government em-
ployees, and have in fact returned to their place of
work in the Department of Agriculture (D.A.), as a
result of both the government’s indifference and even
collusion, since it was their superiors who allowed

FRA collates data from 233
countries and territories. Over 900
specialists from 178 countries
analyze the data which the U.N.
Food and Agriculture Organiza-

Among FRA 2010 findings are:

Present circumstances in the
world point to a growing deafness
and insensibility to truths of faith

John’s gospel already captures this

The Psalms have many refer-
ences to the same predicament.
For example, Ps 76 says: “How
often they rebelled in the wilder-

Yes, there is secularization, a
deadly process of removing God
from society and in people´s daily
lives and affairs. But this, I be-
lieve, is not so much because of
non-believers but rather of those
who say they believe and yet be-
have as if they are not believers.
There are many cases of infi-
delities and disloyalties, disobe-
dience and teachery within the
Church. The worst enemies are
not to be found outside the Church
but inside, not those far from the
Church but those supposedly near,
not those who declare themselves
nemeses but friends and allies.
Worse than worst is when the
enemy is one´s own self. This
happens when one is complacent
instead of ardent in his life of pi-
ety, when a priest or bishop, for
example, talks more of politics and
sociology and psychology instead
of God, faith and morals.

nated,” Asian Development Bank
notes. About 100,000 tons of criti-
cal topsoil is washed out to sea
yearly. Discolored waters stain
Davao, Lingayen and other gulfs.

In this way, preaching is emp-
tied of the power of God, and the
theologizing and philosophising do
not go beyond pure intellectual
exercises that do not spring from
a vital contact with God.
It can have the form and the
trappings, but not the substance.
It can have shreds of truth, but
without charity. Thus, the truths
are often exploited to serve self-
ish ends. They fail to comply with
the requirements of the common
good. They lack depth and scope,
and often stuck in the mind without
any good act produced.
This kind of mind-frame ends
up voiding the commandments of
God and building up purely hu-
man ideologies, with ever weaker
links to faith and ever stronger
urges to be worldly.
Thus, there’s a tendency to
politicize even sacred things, like
the nature of marriage, or the
Church itself, the sacraments, the
doctrinal body of faith and mor-
als, and even Christ himself. Some
have divided Christ into a Christ
of history and a Christ of faith,

Memorial, a historical marker of
the longest-fought battle between
the troops of the American and
Filipino forces and of the Japanese
Imperial Army which took place
in Mintal, Tugbok.
In Calinan district, there is a
museum that features historical
accounts of the Japanese commu-
nity residing in Davao before and
during the war.
Along San Pedro Street, you
can visit Camp Domingo Leonor,
which happened to be the quar-
ters of the Spanish and later
American soldiers in the 1920s.
At the junction of Washington
Street and Quimpo Boulevard, you
can get a glimpse of site of the
bastion of the Muslim hero Datu
Bago who lorded over the Tagloc
River (the old name of Davao
River).
Oldest churches
For those who are interested
in anything related to Catholic
religion, they should go first to
the San Pedro Cathedral, one of
the oldest churches in Mindanao.
The original structure of the
church was built in 1847 in honor
of St. Peter, the city’s patron saint.
The old altar of then San Pedro
Church is preserved at the right
wing of the cathedral featuring
old/antique images of saints and
that of Saint Peter.
At the Shrine Hill in Matina,
there’s the Shrine of the Holy
Infant Jesus of Prague, a local
mecca of the city’s Roman Catholic
devotees. At the Buhangin Dis-
trict, you can say your prayer at
the Saint Mary of Perpetual Ro-
sary. This is a shrine built in honor
of the Blessed Virgin Mary which
features series of steps which leads
to the main chapel.
Another must-see is the Da-
vao Museum, just at the back of
the Sangguniang Panglusod build-
ing. It is a landmark which of-
fers the opportunity to understand

More on nation building
I HAVE been writing about na-
tional development for a ling time
now, but it is only recently that I
realized that nation building is
really a better term to use, since
it is easier to understand, and is
actually more encompassing. Based
on this new understanding, na-
tion building could mean anything
and everything that will contrib-
ute to the fabric of our national
life, and the long term stability
of our institutions as a nation.
For purposes of clarification,
I still would like to point out that
growth is not the same as devel-
opment. A nation could grow in
terms of population and in many
other aspects, but that does not
necessarily mean that it has al-
ready developed. In this sense,
nation building is really different
from national development; a
nation could be built without be-
ing fully developed.
By implication, development
should be the outcome of a plan,
as in a national development plan.
Perhaps this is where nation build-
ing could really be different from
national development, because
nation building could be the ac-
tivity of individual persons in
particular and the citizenry in
general, whereas national devel-
opment is supposed to be a pro-
cess that should be led by the gov-

the soul of the people of Davao.

clothes and souvenir shirts. Mer-
chants speak in Tagalog and En-
glish and they allow price hag-
gling, especially if you buy in bulk.
Your Davao visit will never be
complete without spending some
time at the colorful People’s Park.
Patterned after the 843-acre Cen-
tral Park in New York City, the
park is barraged everyday by
people from all walks of life - from
children to adults, teenagers to
students. On its busiest days, it
is here where you’ll be able to wit-
ness how cosmopolitan the city
is. Even when it is raining, you
will still see a lot of people roaming
around the park.

The expansive and beautiful
People’s Park features many de-
lightful treats for its beholders
to discover. Grand landscaped wa-
terfall, strategically scenic benches,
a small but fun playground, amaz-

Based on the general definition
of nation building that I am now
presenting, it could be said that
any form or function of corporate
social responsibility (CSR) could
be considered as leading to, or
contributory to nation building.
This would include all efforts of
private corporations, as well as
those of privately led civic orga-
nizations.
By definition, or I should say
by expectation, our national de-
velopment plan should be trans-
lated into the local development
plans of our municipalities and
provinces. At this point, I would
like to suggest that we just use
the term “municipalities” to re-
fer to both the cities in the towns.
This should be a no-brainer, be-
cause up to now, even the city halls
are still called “municipio”.
Up to now, I could not under-
stand why the Local Government
Code (LGC) removed the super-
vision and the authority of the
provincial governments from the
chartered cities. As a result of that,
new capitol buildings have to be
built outside the capital cities where
these used to be located. In some
cases, we have ironical situations
wherein capitol buildings are lo-

Yesterday’s timber prima donna is today’s wood-pauper.
We buy wood from countries that invested in tree plan-
tations in the 1970s. Lumber mills were designed for
large-diameter logs that now vanished rain forests once
supplied. Retooling hasn’t been addressed.
Legitimate timber licenses authorize cutting of 5,000
hectares annually. The actual cut is many times that,
FRA notes. Migrants flood into uplands where poverty
incidence can reach over 90 percent. The “land’s carry-
ing capacity” is exceeded.
The writ of government does not run throughout the
land. In remote areas, underpaid ill-equipped forest guards
face encroachers who brandish AK-15 rifles and say: “Here’s
my logging license.”
“Philippine forestry sector is continuously declining
in terms of it’s biophysical, economic and environmen-
tal aspects,” FRA concludes. So did conservation ethics
— the very values needed by future governments to re-
verse the current slide into disaster.
Gloria Macapagal Arroyo served as president for the
decade analyzed in the FRA 2010. She failed to use her
powers, and the bully pulpit of the presidency, to regreen
the Philippines. The President of Brazil did. Luiz Inacio
“Lula” Da Silva confidently sets reduction of Brazil de-
forestation by 80 percent, come 2020.
The post Arroyo regime will inherit an interlocking
crisis of forests, soil, water, energy and population. If a
massive response is not forthcoming, today’s stresses
will become self-reinforcing. And Filipinos of the 21st
century will, like it or not, become the latest clutch of
impoverished ecological orphans.

dropped it. The wood gave a solid thud
that raised dust inside Fabro’s shop.
“Be careful,” he protested. “I intend
to use it still!”
“Then why don’t you help us carry
it you old useless fool!” a soldier in-
sulted him. He didn’t protest any fur-
ther and helped them carry the beam.
“Let us be off to the courtyard. The
executioner’s are waiting!”

As they drew near the courtyard,
Fabro could hear the bloodthirsty
clamor of the crowd, “Crucify him! Cru-
cify him!” There for the first time he
saw the condemned man. The soldier’s
threw the beam to the ground and said,
“Here is your cross, oh king of the
Jews!”
Fabro’s heart broke as the beam
slammed upon the solid pavement.
Splinters flew from its surface and its
smooth texture was dirtied and bruised.
“My wood, my poor wood,” he lamented
while trying to catch his breath.
The condemned Galilean staggered
towards the beam. Fabro was filled
with fear and disgust. The Galilean,

the narrow alleys of the city. Others
threw pebbles and stones. His precious
cypress was also spat upon and hit
by stones.
Then Jesus stumbled to the ground
out of sheer exhaustion. Fabro’s first
reaction was to try to protect the cy-
press. A Roman soldier prevented him
from getting any closer to Jesus. The
condemned man fell and to Fabro’s
amazement, it seemed to him that he
tried his best to keep the beam from
hitting the ground.
“Why is he doing that?” he won-
dered to himself. “Any prisoner would
have used the beam to break the fall,
but he seemed to be concerned about
the cross.”

For the first time, Fabro didn’t know
why, but he felt compassion in his heart
for the Nazarene. He even totally forgot
about the costly beam.
“I’m not a Jew, but this man’s ac-
tions are telling me something. I don’t
know what but I must find out!” The
more he followed Jesus, the more he
longed to console and help him in some
way, even just to shield him from the
insults and accusations hurled at him.
The Hill of the Skulls was wait-
ing. Fear of that dreadful place made
Fabro reluctant to get any closer. From
a distance he watched everything.
Again, he saw how Jesus did not hurl
the beam in protest, but with his re-
maining strength slowly lowered it to
the ground.
The Galilean was stripped of his
clothes. There was no part of his body
that was spared by bruises and deep
cuts. The executioners pushed Jesus
to the ground and spread him upon
the cypress beam.
Fabro wanted to cover his ears from
the hammer blows. He was even more
pained to see that he had bored the
holes too far apart that the executioners
had to force the man’s arms to match
the holes.
Unable to stand such inhumane cru-
elty, Fabro wept and abandoned Cal-
vary. He felt ashamed that he had given
more value to a piece of wood over
the life of an innocent man. He spent

the entire evening unable to sleep and
eat.
“Who was that man?” he wondered.
“Why did he seem to care for a cross
that brought him death?” Fabro could
not stop weeping and pondering over
these mysterious events.

The Sabbath was ending, and Fabro
had not yet been able to sleep nor eat.
There was an unusual silence over the
entire city. He had not accomplished
anything the entire day and decided
to put order in the shop.
The remaining piece of the cypress
was still on the cutting table. Fabro
was amazed to see that it had dried
up and had lost it perfumed smell. It
was no longer smooth and even lost
some of its weight. It would no longer
be fit for Herod’s throne and the trea-
sure chest. “I will have to find another
worthy material.”
He retired and finally slept. That
night he dreamt of the beam he had
abandoned in Calvary. He saw how it
sprouted branches, leaves and fruits.
It grew and became a tremendous tree
that covered the entire world.

It was just about at dawn the next
day that the sound of a gentle knock
on the door woke Fabro up.
“Coming! I’m coming!” he recalled
how two days ago he was violently
roused from sleep by soldiers.
A brilliant light entered and illu-
mined the entire house, but his eyes
were not dazed. In the midst of the
light was the Galilean. His wounds
had disappeared except for the ones
left by the nails on his hands and feet.
“Fabro!” Jesus said gently. “Do not
be afraid. It is I! I have come to re-
turn the wood that you have treasured
so much. Thank you for preparing my
Cross that has brought mankind its
salvation.”
Jesus entered and laid the beam
upon the table. “Keep it well and may
it be a memory of my love and sacri-
fice for you and all men!”
In a flash of light, Jesus disappeared.
Fabro embraced the Cross, knelt
down and prayed, “My Lord and my
God!”

Sa bayan ng Bocaue, napatay
si Corporal Leonardo Pataray y
Galvan ng 3rd Infantry Batallion
noong Mayo 4, 2004 matapos maki-
pagbarilan sa isang tauhan ni
Mayor Jonjon Villanueva.
Sa bayan ng Bulakan, tinam-
bangan, napaslang at pinagna-
kawan si Luisito Sta. Maria habang

Sa bayan ng San Miguel, ni-
rapido ang bahay ni Edmundo Jose

bangan at napaslang si Inhinyero
Contantino Pascual sa Barangay
Sta. Rita Matanda sa bayan ng San
Miguel. Si Pascual ay dating pa-
ngulo ng Rosemoor Mining and
Development Corporation at ilang
beses ding kumandidato bilang
alkalde ng San Miguel.
Noong Hulyo 31, 2008, ang
dating alkalde naman ng katabing
bayan ng Apalit, Pampanga na si
Tirso Lacanilao ang pinaslang sa
kahabaaan ng MacArthur High-
way sa Calumpit.
Noong Pebrero 13, 2008, bi-
nugbog ng mga tauhan ni dating

pamamagitan ng mga satellite
kung saan nakaugnay ang mga
kamera.
“Umaasa kami na matutupad
ang layuning mapukaw ang pansin
ng mga tao, maging ang mga kan-
didato, ng planong palabas at mau-
nawaan nila ang kahalagahan ng
pangangalaga sa kalikasan parti-
kular na ang Angat Dam na nag-
iisang pinagkukunan ng tubig ng
Kalakhang Maynila sa ngayon,”
ani Francisco.
Habang ipinakikita ni Francisco

Ngunit sa kasalukuyan, wala
pang bagyo na namataaan malapit
sa Pilipinas ang Philippine Atmo-
spheric, Geophysical, Astronomical
Services Administration, matapos
dumaan ang bagyong Agaton no-
ong nakaraang linggo na naghatid
lamang ng ulap at manaka-nakang
pag-ulan sa iba’t ibang panig ng

Kasong impeachment, disbarment isasampa

bakasyon nang magbotohan ang mga mahis-
trado sa kaso ng protesta ni Pagdanganan
laban kay Mendoza.
“Lumalabas na ibinoto niya si Justice
Puno,” ani Pagdanganan at binasa pa ang
isang bahagi ng desisyon kung saan ihinayag
ni Carpio na inayunan ni Puno na iboto
niya ito sa nasabing desisyon.
“How could he do that?” ani ng dating
gobernador. “Puwede na ba ang absentee
voting sa Supreme Court.”
“Isang malinaw na misrepresentation
ang ginawa ni Justice Carpio at iyon ay
labag sa kanyang sinumpaang tungkulin,”
ani Pagdanganan.
Iginiit niya na kaya siya magsasampa
ng kaso laban kay Carpio ay upang malina-
wan kung totoong binigyang karapatan ni
Puno si Carpio na bumoto para kanya.
Patungkol naman sa desisyon ng Korte
Suprema na pumabor kay Mendoza, nag-
pahayag ng pagtataka si Pagdanganan.
Aniya, “Paanong nagkaroon ng grace
abuse of discretion ang Comelec sa pagbibigay
sa akin ng karapatan na manungkulan, eh
ako ang nanalo sa protesta.”
Ipinaalala niya na dalawang taon at
pitong buwan na siyang naghihintay sa na-
sabing desisyon, ngunit naharang pa rin
ito ng Korte Suprema.
Ayon kay Pagdanganan unang nakialam
ang Korte Suprema sa kaso ng protesta
na kanyang isinampa laban kay Mendoza
noong Hulyo 2009 matapos magpetisyon
ang huli.
Dahil dito, halos 100 araw na naantala
ang proseso ng Comelec sa nasabing pro-
testa, hanggang sa payagan ng Korte Supre-
ma ang Comelec noong Oktubre at maka-
paglabas ito ng desisyon noong Disyembre
1 na nagsabing si Pagdanganan ang nagwagi
sa halalan noong 2007.
Nitong Marso 8 muling nagpetisyon si
Mendoza sa Korte Suprema at kinabukasan
ay inilabas nito ang utos na status quo ante
order kaya’t nanatili si Mendoza sa panu-
nungkulang sa loob ng pitong araw.

Pinili ang tagsibol
Nararapat lamang, hindi ba, na pi-
liin ng Diyos ang tagsibol upang para-
ngalan ang Kanyang Anak. Dahil ang
tagsibol ay ang panahon ng muling
pagkabuhay ng ating kapaligiran, ang
oras para sa bagong buhay, bagong
awitin at bagong kagandahan.
Kung paano ang isang munting
binhi ay siniklot-siklot ng hangin ng
taglagas, binulok ng ulan at yelo at
inilibing sa lupa sa buong panahon
ng taglamig upang muling mabuhay
at tumubo sa panahon ng tagsibol —
ganito rin ang katawan ng ating Pangi-
noon. Bilang binhi ng Diyos, Siya ay
pinarusahan at pinahirapan at pag-
katapos ay ibinaon sa lupa nguni’t sa
ikatlong araw, isang magandang araw
sa tagsibol sa kabundukan ng Judea,
ang Kanyang katawan ay humiwalay
sa pagkakabilanggo sa kamatayan at
dumaan itong tulad ng isang espiritu
sa makapal na bato, bumangong mata-
gumpay sa gitna ng pag-awit ng aleluya
ng mga anghel at sa gitna ng malakas
na lindol na siyang parangal ng kapa-
ligiran sa Diyos.
Simbahan ang pinakasalan
At dahil sa ang simbahan ang pi-
nakasalan ni Kristo, dapat itong mag-
saya sa tagumpay ng muling nabuhay
na ang Panginoon. Dapat itong mag-
bihis ng saya tulad ng isang marang-
yang trahe sa kanyang kasal. Dapat
nitong isaisang tabi ang pag-aayuno,
ang penitensiya at ang paghingi ng
kapatawaran. Kapalit nito, dapat ni-
tong isigaw ang kanyang kasiyahan
at sindihan ang kandilang Paschal na
siyang simbolo ng kanyang paniniwala,
pag-asa at pag-ibig. At kahit na saan,
dapat nitong hingin sa kanyang mga
disipulo na magsaya dahil ang Pa-
nginoon ay muling nabuhay tulad ng
Kanyang pangako — at tagsibol na
sa espirituwal na buhay ng Simbahan.

Looking at it from another perspec-
tive, our national development plan
could also have been based on the in-
puts of our provincial development
plans, but it appears that that is not
possible now, because of the fact that
the LGC has removed the jurisdiction
of the chartered cities from the prov-
inces. At the very least, I would say
that this is not good for environmen-
tal planning and management, because
despite the artificial political divisions,
all the provinces, including the char-
tered cities are in the same biosphere,
and in the same watersheds.
Also looking at it from another
perspective, it is really important and
necessary to support and sustain all
privately led initiatives in nation build-

Hindi na kayang abutin si Kristo ng
kalungkutan, pait at paghihirap. “Ako
ay muling nabuhay,” ang sabi Niya,
“at Ako ay makakasama ninyo hang-
gang sa katapusan ng mundo.”
Magsaya? Bakit? Dahil ang muling
pagkabuhay ni Kristo ang siyang mo-
delo at garantiya ng ating sariling
muling pagkabuhay. Dahil sa Kanyang
pagkamatay sa krus, inihingi ni Kristo
sa Diyos ng kapatawaran ang kasalanan
ng tao at dahil dito ay naisaayos Niya
ang kasiraan ng kaluluwa sa pama-
magitan ng pagkakamit ng kapang-
yarihan laban sa ating mga kasalanan.
Dahil sa Kanyang muling pagkabuhay,
pinatay ni Kristo ang kamatayan at
ibinalik Niya ang kasiraan ng ating
mga katawan sa pamamagitan ng pag-
bibigay sa atin ng kapangyarihan na
magbangon sa libingan sa ikatlong
araw.
Tinukso si Kamatayan
Ukol sa araw na ito, tinukso pa ni
San Pablo ang kamatayan tulad ng
isang tao: “O Kamatayan, nasaan ang
iyong tagumpay? O Kamatayan, nasaan
ang iyong lakas? Ah, ang kamatayan
ay kinain ng ating tagumpay!” Kinain
nga ang kamatayan ng tagumpay ni
Kristo dahil sa Kanyang muling pagka-
buhay. Ang muling pagkabuhay na ito
ni Kristo ang siyang garantiya na hindi
katapusan ng lahat ang kamatayan
kundi simula pa lamang ng isang
matagumpay na buhay. At pagkatapos
ng huling araw, ang lahat ng nitso ng
mga namatay ay sinarhan ng marka
ng krus at mababasa sa ganitong kataga
na siya ring nakasulat sa libingan ni
Kristo: “Siya ay wala dito, Siya ay
muling nabuhay.”

mga puso. Ang pag-asa ng darating
na muling pagkabuhay ay narito at

building could fill in the gaps that are
left open by the government led na-
tional development planning function.
In theory, the government is sup-
posed to be owned by the people, given
the fact that all the officials and staff
of the three branches of the govern-
ment are in the payroll of the people.
In this sense, it could truly be said
that governance is not supposed to be
the exclusive domain or function of
the bureaucracy, meaning that the
people should be part of the gover-
nance process both at the local and
the national levels.
In theory as well, the people are

buksan natin ang ating mga puso. Sa
ibabaw ng Kalbaryo ay nagluluningning
ang ating Pasko ng Pagkabuhay.
Ang Kristo na nabubuhay na kasa-
ma ninyo ay ang Kristong muling
nabuhay. Siya ang nangako ng inyong
kaligayahan at katubusan. At ang kali-
gayahang ito ay hindi maaaring agawin
sa inyo ninuman.
Madalas ninyong tanggapin ang
katawan ng Kristong muling nabuhay
at itatanim Niya sa inyo ang darating
na pag-akyat sa langit.
‘Ako ang daan’
“Ako ang daan,” ang minsang si-
nabi ni Kristo nang kanyang buhayin
si Lazaro. “Ang sinumang kumain ng
Aking katawan at uminom ng Aking
dugo ay magkakaroon ng walang hang-
gang buhay at siya ay Aking itataas
sa huling araw.” Bibigyan ni Kristo
ng bahagi ang tao sa Kanyang paghi-
hirap, nguni’t bibigyan din Niya ang
mga ito ng bahagi sa Kanyang kalu-
walhatian.
At sa wakas, huwag nating kali-
mutang dalhin ang ating pagsasaya
sa Pasko ng Pagkabuhay kay Maria.
Sa panahong ito ng kaligayahan ay
hindi natin maaring kalimutan ang
nakagawian na nating tawaging “Ang
Dahilan ng ating Kaligayahan.”
Tiniyak sa atin na si Maria ay muli
nang nabuhay at kasalukuyan nang
nasa langit. Minamahal niya tayo,
ipinagdarasal niya tayo at siya’y umaasa
na darating ang araw ay yayakapin
niya ang katawan ng lahat ng kanyang
mga anak na muling nangabuhay.
Ito nga ang araw na ginawa ng
Panginoon; kaya maging maligaya at
magsaya tayo.

There is no shortage of accommo-
dations in Davao, ranging from the
four-star accommodations of the Marco
Polo Davao on Claveria, the Royal
Mandaya Hotel on Ponciano, the
Grand Regal Hotel and the Water-
front Insular Hotel on Lanang, and
the Apo View Hotel in Bonifacio, to
lodges and inns, all around the city.
How do you get to Davao City? Most
domestic airlines fly multiple times
per day to Davao from Manila, Cebu
and other major cities in Visayas and
Mindanao. Silk Air also flies direct
to Davao from Singapore. Davao is
served by the Davao International
Airport, which is about 15 minutes
ride from the city center. Madayaw!

the theory. As it is now, there appears

The people are also supposed to be

If only these are functioning, then CSR
programs and projects could also help.

There are inconsistencies and gaping gaps in the lives
of many so-called believers, especialy those in public of-
fice. Pretensions and hypocrisies abound, and while to a
certain degree these are understandable given our frag-
ile human condition, in many cases hardly anything is
done to correct them.
Some so-called Christians even go against Christ´s teach-
ing in their public functions. Their idea of governance
barely goes beyond bureaucratic efficiency. Again it´s empty
of its basic requirement of vital contact with God. It´s
purely human, stuck with the criteria of practicality, con-
venience and the like, and nothing about fostering sanc-
tity.
What can we do with this widespread scenario? I sup-
pose we just have to do what St. John the Baptist did,
and what other saints did, and finally what Christ did.
We just have to pursue what we know is good and is God’s
will, even if there’s no immediate social impact. The cry
in the desert will have its fruits someday.
In the meantime, we have to patiently learn the doc-
trine, wage a continuous ascetical struggle developing virtues
and convictions, then start to do personal apostolate making
use of whatever circumstance we have at the moment.
Of course, we should also try to aim higher and deeper,
even going to public places to proclaim the good news in
a world sunk in confusion, ignorance and error. All of
these done always in charity, patience and hope.
Let’s remember this is God’s work more than ours.

Ang pagdiriwang na isinagawa
noong Sabado ng gabi, Marso 27 ay
bahagi ng muling pakikiisa sa buong
mundo ng mga Bulakenyo sa pagtitipid
sa paggamit ng kuryente sa pamama-
gitan ng pagpatay o pagsasara sa mga
ilaw.
Ito ay naging dahilan upang maka-
tipid ang SM City Baliuag at SM Super-
mall sa Marilao ng mahigit sa tig-

ang pagsasagawa ng Earth Hour ay
isang hakbang upang makalikha ng
higit na pang-unawa sa mga tao sa
kahalagahan ng pagtitipid sa kuryente,
matapos na hindi magkasundo-sundo
ang mga lider ng mundo sa kum-

Ang Earth Hour ay sinimulan ni

nakiisa sa pagdiriwang sa pamamagitan
ng pagpatay o pagsasara ng mga ilaw
mula Europa, Timog at Hilagang Ame-
rika, Africa, Australia, at Asia, kabilang
ang may 15-M katao sa Pilipinas.
Ang pahayag nina Abrazaldo at
Castro ay sinundan ni Martin Fran-
cisco, tagapangulo ng SSMES na nag-
sabi na ang walang habas na paggamit
ng kuryente ay malaki ang epekto sa
kalikasan dahil ang ibang planta ng
kuryente ay gumagamit ng langis at
uling upang makalikha ng kuryente
na ang usok ay nakakadagdag naman
sa global warming o pag-init ng mundo.
Iginiit niya na bukod sa pagtitipid
sa kuryente, dapat ding isaisip at
isagawa ng mga tao ang pagtitipid sa
tubig at pag-iingat sa kalikasan katulad
ng watershed ng Angat Dam na pi-
nagkukunan ng 97 porsiyentong inu-
min ng Kalakhang Maynila.
“Matagal na nating naririnig ang
usapin sa climate change, pero hindi
natin binibigyan ng sapat na atensyon
ang pangangalaga sa kalikasan katulad
ng kabundukang nasasakop ng Angat
Watershed,” aniya.
Sinabi ni Francisco na sa kasa-
lukuyan ay patuloy ang pagkasira ng
nasabing watershed dahil sa walang
habas na pamumutol ng punong kahoy
sa may 63,000 ektaryang nasasakupan
nito.
Naging matagumpay naman ang
pagsasagawa ng Earth Hour sa SM
City Baliuag at SM Supermall sa Ma-
rilao dahil sa pakikisa ng mga Bu-
lakenyo.
Sa Baliuag,naging tampok ang
pagpapalipad ng may 100 skylantern
na pansamantalang nagbigay liwanag
sa madilimna kalangitan habang ang
sky lantern na may apoy ay nakalutang
sa himpapawid.
Ang sky lantern ay yari sa papel
at nakakatulad ng isang malaking supot
na may bilog na balangkas sa ilalim
kung saan nakalagay ang isang piraso
ng mitsa na animo’y kandilang lapad.
Kapag ang mitsa nito ay sinindahan,
naiipon ang usok sa loob ng sky lan-
tern na siya namang nagpapataas dito.
Ang sistema nito ay katulad ng sa
higanteng hot air balloon na napapataas
sa himpapawid ng usok o mainit na
hangin.
Sa pagtaas ng mga sky lantern sa
himpapawid sa harap ng SM Baliuag,
nagpalakpakan ang mga manonood
at kanya-kanyang kuha ng larawan
at video gamit ang kanilang cellular
phone o kaya’y digital camera.
Kapansin-pansin namang walang
lokal na opisyal sa Bulacan ang nakiisa
sa pagsasagawa ng Earth Hour sa
Baliuag.
Bukod sa sky lantern, nagbigay din
ng bahagyang liwanag ang mga fire

KUNG ang Estados Unidos ay mayroong “March
Madness” na patungkol sa kung kailan ang semifinal
round at championship playoff ng U.S. NCAA, dito sa
Pilipinas ay mayroon ding “Manny Pacquiao March
Madness”.
Itong huli ay patungkol naman sa mga laban ng
Pambansang Kamao na ginanap sa buwan ng Marso
na kasama na sa kanyang ma-alamat na pagwawagi
ng pitong kampeonato sa mundo sa pito ring dibisyon.
Tunay na ang buwan ng Marso ay maituturing
na masuwerte at mahalaga sa boxing career ni Pacman
na nagsimula noong Enero 22,1995 noong siya’y isa
pa lamang buto’t-balat na kumakampanya sa jun-
ior-flyweight o sa timbang na 106 libra.
Sa buwan ng Marso ginanap ang anim na laban
sa kabuuang 56, 38 dito ay sa pamamagitan ng KO,
tatlong talo at dalawang tabla.
Noong Marso 15, 2008 nang makuha niya ang World
Boxsing Council at Ring Magazine super-featherweight
championship sa pamamagitan ng isang split deci-
sion victory laban sa Mehikanong si Juan Manuel
Marquez sa isang 12-round paghaharap sa Mandalay
Bay Resort sa Las Vegas.
Matatandaan na noong Linggo lamang ay dinomina

nang magtagpo sila sa Luneta.
Ang tanging nagsilbing bahid sa matagumpay niyang
laban sa buwan ng Marso ay ang pagkatalo niya sa
desisyon kay Erik Morales noong Marso 19, 2005 para
sa WBC super-featherweight title sa labang ginanap
sa MGM Grand sa Las Vegas.
Madali naman niyang nabawi ang pagkatalong ito
sa pamamagitan ng 10th round knockout noong Jan.
1, 2006 at isa pang KO sa third round noong Novem-
ber 18, 2006 para tapusin ang kanilang makasaysayang
trilogy sa Thomas and Mack Center sa “City of Sin”.
Mula noon ay nakapagtala pa ang three-time ‘Fighter
of the Year’ awardee ng Boxing Writers Association
of America ng walong panalo, lima dito sa pamamagitn
