mortality. Dr. Yoel Pomerantz, 64, an unemployed clinical

Dr. Pomerantz volunteers at a psychology hotline, and as
an expert on suicide callers, he suggests that they come to
his clinic for private therapy sessions. One day, a patient is
offended when Pomerantz arrives late for a session and jumps
off his 12th floor balcony to his death. The suicide provides
the doctor with a life changing ideato let his apartment
to potentially suicidal tenants for enormous sums of money.
Funny, sad and philosophical, this black comedy raises the
important question of why we live or, more accurately, why

they immigrated to Palestine. The flat was furnished with heavy
European pieces, with the best of German literature, and laden with
layers of dust and history. Objects, pictures, letters, and documents
awaited us after my grandmother died at the age of 98, revealing
the complex lives of my grandparents Gerda and Kurt Tuchler, as
well as traces of a troubled and painful past. The film develops into a
riveting adventure and even reveals some secrets that should have

four-decade-old military legal system in the Occupied Territories.
Since Israel conquered the territories in the 1967 War, the IDF legal
corps have created and implemented thousands of military orders
and laws, established military courts, and sentenced hundreds of
thousands of Palestinians. This complex system which is invisible to
most Israelis, is very present in Palestinian daily life. Why does Israel
invest so much into the legal infrastructure of the occupation? The
film tries to answer this and other questions while also exploring

The British Film Festival

Dear cinema goers,

We are proud and excited to bring back the British Film Festival. This
has arguably been one of the best years in British Cinema with
some leaders in the field saying we have entered a Golden Age.
We are delighted therefore to bring you a programme that presents
some of the most intriguing films produced in the UK in the last
year.
Paddy Considines Tyrannosaur, a profound drama starring the
magnificent Peter Mullan, is one of the most impressive debut features
in British Cinema. Ben Wheatleys horror film Kill List has already
earned cult status in the UK. The Turner Prize winner Steve McQueen
presents Shame, a breathtaking drama exploring human addiction.
These marvelous examples of new British Cinema not only entertain
but provide challenging and important questions about the issues
faced by contemporary British society. The festival programme will
provide opportunities for discussion and reflection - bringing an
Israeli perspective to these issues.
The British Film Festival comes close on the heels of an inspiring
launch at the Haifa International Film Festival of the UK-Israel CoProduction Film Treaty which was ratified earlier this year. We will
continue to support the building of closer relations between
film makers, helping to breathe life into the treaty and therefore
strengthening the cultural relations between Israel and the UK.
We wish to thank the festival team, our partners at the
Cinematheques, all our supporters and distributors, whose
dedication and creativity made this festival possible. We thank the
British Ambassador to Israel, Matthew Gould, not just for gracing the
opening night, but also for his enthusiastic support for film.

She was born on a train in the Galilee, the only child of parents who had emigrated from
the Soviet Union in 1924 and together ran a small traveling theater Ohel that performed
primarily in the kibbutzim in Mandate Palestine. From the mid-sixties Aza Zvi began
writing essays of great stylistic distinction, at once personal, allusive, heterodox in taste,
and written in a Hebrew in which the archaic biblical phrase and the modern, spoken
word were effortlessly conjoined. Writing on contemporary Hebrew poets whom she
knew, notably Zelda and Yona Wollach, Aza would become the memoirist intime of
both her native-born peers and her parents generation, with an affinity for its loners
and outcasts. Aza wrote in long-handshe never adjusted to a typewriter, let alone a
computeron loose scraps of paper in her tiny, rundown apartment in Mea Shearim,
the ultra-Orthodox quarter of Jerusalem, crammed with her parents furniture, her
books, cartons of memorabilia, and towering stacks of old newspapers. Her neighbors,
in black gabardine and shtreimel, must have looked at her askancesingle, nonreligious, hennaed hairbut it was practically impossible to harbor misgivings or to
remain suspicious of Aza once one heard her speak with her childlike inflections. It was
precisely the blending of innocence and heightened literary acumen that resonated
in her writings. Helit Yeshurun, the editor of Hadarim, Israels most influential literary
review, where many of Azas essays were published, was undoubtedly right in remarking
that Aza, in her own way, embodied a forgotten Israel of the early statehood years.
