FAST FACT:
IN-SPIRE
One of the more exciting – and chal-
lenging – aspects of constructing
Trump Toronto is installing the tower’s
25-meter glass spire. “The hammer-
head tower crane will be replaced with
a stiff-leg derrick after the concrete is
topped out,” Garland says.
“That stiff-leg derrick is going to
have a very long boom which will be
used to erect the spire.”
The entire structure will stand 281
meters or 924 feet tall.
Space Savers
Lewis Builds is constructing Trump
Toronto on a modest parcel of land bound-
ed by the 72-story Scotia Plaza to the east
and the historical National Club to the
south. It sits on the corner of Bay and
Adelaide, two bustling city streets that
require their sidewalks to remain open at
all times. Across the street, another con-
tractor is hard at work on the 51-story Bay
Adelaide Centre project and has already
secured a traffic lane and a parking lane.
“There is absolutely no area inside the
property or outside the property for con-
struction staging,” Garland notes.
To compensate, the contractor made
an agreement with the Bank of Nova
Scotia next door to cover its driveway
entrance – located on the east side of the
property – and use it for construction
staging. It also rented property at the
shore of Lake Ontario for off-site stag-
ing, he says.
Trump Toronto will have a fairly shal-
low basement – just two levels below
grade – for truck services. Resident and
visitor parking will be on levels two
