UMTS SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

I. II.

UMTS Subscriber Identity Module (USIM) : Support of authorized access to network. Mobile Station (MS) : Service control and user interface. UTRAN (UMTS Terrestrial Radio Access Network) : Handles all radio related functionality WCDMA is radio interface standard here. CN (Core Network) : Responsible for transport functions such as switching, routing calls and data tracking. Radio Network Controller (RNC) Used as (Radio) mobility and radio resources management.

III. IV. V.

[CS DOMAIN] a) Gateway MSC (GMSC) : Provides interconnection between the UMTS core network and external PSTN/ISDN networks. b) Visitor Location Register (VLR) : (Secondary) data base supporting the management of mobile subscribers currently located within its VLR area. Exchange information with HLR to allow the proper handling of calls.

[PS DOMAIN]
c) Gateway GSN (GGSN) : Gateway for UMTS packet service to external data networks. Performs user data screening and security. d) Serving GSN (SGSN) : Subscriber database management (interface with HLR) and maintenance of charging data. Home (primary) data base in charge of the management of mobile subscribers. Stores the UE location on the level of MSC and SGSN.

[Wideband Code Division Multiple Access (WCDMA)]

Used as the air radio interface standard for UMTS and the wideband direct sequence spread
spectrum.

UMTS SYSTEM ARCHITECTURE

i.

UMTS System Architecture uses WCDMA [Wideband Code Division Multiple Access] as the radio interface standard which is 5-MHz Channel (25 GSM channels) using QPSK modulation process.

STRUCTURE OF WCDMA QPSK MODULATOR. ii. iii. Downlink Radio Frequency Channel structure of UMTS system is direct spread spectrum QPSK [Quadrate Phase Shifting Keying] modulation process. QPSK has n (number of bits) = 2 and M (Mary encoding) = 4.
