Mestinon is useful in the treatment of myasthenia gravis.

SIDE EFFECT
nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal cramps, increased peristalsis, increased salivation, increased bronchial secretions, miosis and diaphoresis.

CONTRAINDICATION
Mestinon is contraindicated in mechanical intestinal or urinary obstruction, and particular caution should be used in its administration to patients with bronchial asthma. Care should be observed in the use of atropine for counteracting side effects, as discussed below.

NURSING MANAGEMENT -Monitor for overdosing. If overdose occurred call the poison control department. -Do not store in the
bathroom -Monitor Vital signs -Monitor for possible adverse reactions

INDICATION
anticholinester ase agent, Prostigmin (neostigmine) is indicated for the symptomatic treatment of myasthenia gravis. Its greatest usefulness is in prolonged therapy where no difficulty in swallowing is present.

CONTRAINDICATION
Prostigmin (neostigmine) is contraindicated in patients with known hypersensitivity to the drug. Because of the presence of the bromide ion, it should not be used in patients with a previous history of reaction to bromides. It is contraindicated in patients with peritonitis or mechanical obstruction of the intestinal or urinary tract.

NURSING MANAGEMENT -Before giving the medication ask the patients medical

extreme muscle weakness; slurred speech, vision problems; feeling like you might pass out; severe stomach cramps or diarrhea; trouble breathing, cough with mucus

history, especially of: seizures, asthma, heart disease (e.g., slow/irregular heartbeat, coronary artery disease) -The patient should be encouraged to keep a daily record of his or her condition to assist the physician in determining an optimal therapeuticregimen. -Instruct the patient to take this medication by mouth with or without food as directed by your doctor. -Instruct the patient to take this medication with food or milk may help to decrease side effects.
