HOW TO BUY A MATTRESS

By Coy Miller
The Sleep Shop Auburn and Grass Valley, CA
o youre tossing and turning, your body aches, and you cant sleep. It could be time for a new mattress. There is no set guide for deciding when its time to buy one. But if yours is saggy, lumpy, more than seven years old, stained, or if you wake feeling tired and achy; it is time to go mattress shopping. The good news is that technology has given you more choices as to the type of mattress you might need. There are many types of mattresses and levels of firmness to choose from, but no true science to support the idea that one type of mattress is better than another. Everyone sleeps a little differently and has different likes and needs. The best mattress is the one that gives you the best nights sleep and it isnt necessarily the most expensive one. So, you need to take the time and try the mattresses. If you sleep on your side, you need to try them lying on your side. The way you sleep. There is no industry standard to define commonly used terms like firm or plush. So, wear loose clothing and take your time finding the firmness that you prefer. There are many manufactures and many types of mattresses that offer different support qualities. Tempur-Pedic is the leading manufacturer in Memory Foam mattresses. They conform and support you extremely well. They last a little longer than a conventional mattress and have less Motion Transfer. They are however, more expensive than the conventional innerspring mattress. Simmons Beautyrest and Sealy Posturepedic are still leading manufactures with various feels and support stories. There are also more Eco Friendly latex mattresses. They also, are long lasting with various firmnesses. Mattress buying information is sometimes confusing and the manufactures dont help. They give the same models different names from store to store, making comparison shopping difficult. That is where your local family owned mattress store can help. We are factory trained professionals that are not on commission. We take time to Fit you in the right mattress. We also use your budget, not ours, to make the choice. A mattress is an investment in your health and sleep. The Sleep Shop will always give you the best mattress for your money. We recently move dour warehouse to the old furniture bargains building on Hwy. 49. There we have a mattress clearance center and Auburns new furniture store, Nest Furniture - Accessories and More!

HOW T O CHOOSE A STORAGE FACILITY

There are a number of things to consider when you are looking for a self storage facility
Just as no two people are the same, no self storage facilities are created equal. It requires some time and energy to research, but youll be glad you did when you know your valuables are safe, secure and protected. Find a reputable facility with 24-hour security, such as security cameras, alarm systems, fences, and secured entries. Make sure you have individual door alarms and there is a property manager who lives on site to monitor security. Dont be afraid to ask questions. Ask about their damage policy due to water, rodents, insects and other pests that can cause considerable damage. Ask about what steps are taken to ensure damage control. Are the units clean and well lit? Is the unit dry and adequately ventilated? Does the facility provide climate control units to protect your valuable documents, photographs, archives, antiques, furniture, and other possessions that are vulnerable to extreme heat or moisture? Do the units offer shelving? Wide or tall Wanda Carter doors to accommodate the warehousing of Resident Manager large items? Does the facility offer free use of their truck for moving your belongings? Do they have dollies and carts available? Do they sell locks, boxes, and packing supplies? Can you park next to the doors to unload? Is 18-wheeler access available? Is the staff friendly and knowledgeable as they help you choose the right size of unit for your needs? Do you need RV , auto or boat storage? Decide what you need to store and ask the manager to help you select the correct size. Are the storage spaces all on ground level? Check around. Call several storage facilities to find the best price for the size of unit you need. Ask about their long term lease and monthly discounts. What are their terms on deposits and late fees? Are there fees for moving out of the unit. What are their payment options? Do they take credit cards, offer monthly billing, pay online, auto payments, or drop box payments? Most of all, read the contract carefully! Check their website for customer comments and referrals. Location is important. Make sure the property has easy access. If you frequently need access to the stored items such as a business select a facility close to your residence. If you are storing items long term, you might not need a storage unit close by. Wanda Carter, resident manager at Quartz Drive Self Storage, will be happy to answer any questions concerning storage units and will continue to provide a safe and secure environment for your valuable belongings and meet all of your storage needs.

Choosing the Right Health Club...

here are many different reasons for joining a Health Club. For many people those reasons include losing weight, relieving stress, restoring energy and vitality, and preventing illness. Making the decision to join is the critical first step in the process of achieving your goals, but choosing the right one is equally as important. Taking on a healthier lifestyle means you have to make some important changes in your mindset, your lifestyle choices, and your day-to-day activities. To succeed you will need guidance, support, and encouragement. Choose the health club where you can find all three. The right health club has a staff of fitness professionals to serve you and the equipment and programs to support your mission. Some of the most important factors to consider when selecting a Health Club are: Atmosphere (will your visits relieve stress or add more?) Cleanliness (is the club diligent about keeping things clean and sanitary?) Equipment (is it effective, efficient, and well maintained?) Classes & programs (is there a wide variety of offerings?) Staff (is the staff friendly, helpful, supportive and professionally certified?) Value (will you be renting a treadmill, or connecting into something that will bring meaningful change to your life?) With these things clear in your mind, go to www.healthclubs.com to see what quality clubs are in your area. Next, visit their websites to get an idea of what they have to offer. Then call to set up a time to get a tour of the facility; always pick the time for a tour that you would normally use the club to see what it will be like when youre there. During the tour you can evaluate the atmosphere, cleanliness, equipment, classes and programs, the staff, and the value of their membership. If it feels right, then join and be on the road to better health!

How to Survive The Economic Roller Coaster

by Kent R. Suemnicht, FIC
It twists, it turns, it goes up, it comes down and it even has the uncanny ability to make many of us feel a bit wobbly and nauseous. The economic roller coaster has taken all of us for a wild ride, particularly over the past few years. So what can you do now to help gain back some control over your financial life? Thrivent Financial for Lutherans, a not-for-profit financial services organization, offers the following timeless tips to help you survive the ride.
1. Pay down your debt, but dont forget to pay yourself too. Generally speaking, the sooner you pay off your debt especially consumer debt like that of credit cardsthe better off youll be. However, also set aside money on a regular basis for an emergency. Track, then manage, your cash flow. Its impossible to manage your money if you dont have a feel for what you take in and where your money goes. A budget can be a real lifesaver in terms of ensuring that you have a solid financial foundation. Insure the fundamentals (health, property, income and life). Everything you own is at risk IF your fundamental needs of your life are not properly insured. A financial professional can assist you in determining the appropriate level of insurance for your specific circumstances. Grow your job skills. Perhaps one of the most neglected of our assets is our job skills. Continually seek to grow and enhance your value to your current employer or potential employers by growing your job skills through continuing education, volunteer experiences, and more. Direct your bonus or raise toward financial priorities. If you are lucky enough to have received a bonus or raise, put it towards a financial priority, like paying down your debt, creating an emergency savings, continuing education, or building your retirement account. Invest for the long-term. It may be tempting to discontinue participation in your companys 401(k) account. Dont! Letting emotions override sound economic decisions could be a big 10. mistake. It is wise to continue to participate in a 401(k) program, especially if your company is matching your contribution. Consider time, not timing. When will you need the money? The strategy of someone 25 years away from retirement versus just one or two is obviously going to be different. Make sure your portfolio is rebalanced and is appropriately allocated for your risk tolerance, but also make sure you are ready to take advantage of a market rebound. 7. Build your financial knowledge. Read financial publications; listen to financial shows; talk to friends and financial professionals. The more you know, the better decisions you will make concerning the financial choices you have. Talk with loved ones about location of financial documents. It is especially important for senior parents and adult children to discuss this matter. Every family will differ regarding their comfort level around discussing specifics of end-of-life and healthcare issues, but all families should, at a minimum, inform their loved ones where specific financial documents can be found (e.g., health care directives; long-term care and life insurance policies; pension and retirement account information). Meet with a financial professional and work with a strong company A financial professional can be invaluable in helping you create and track a financial program appropriate to your goals. Work with someone you trust; someone who has an excellent reputation and plenty of positive references. Ask the right questions to make sure the company or companies you will be working with are strong and stable. Live generously. It is easy to get caught up in everything going on in our world. Dont forget to give back. Make financial donations when you can and look for opportunities to volunteer and share.

Each funds investment per-formance depends upon how its assets are allocated across broad asset categories and applicable subclasses within such categories. Some broad asset categories and subclasses may perform below expectations or below the securities markets generally over short or extended periods. In particular, under performance in the equity markets could have material adverse effects on a funds total return if the fund has a significant allocation to equities. Therefore a principal risk of investing in asset allocation funds is that the strategies used and the decisions made will not produce the desired results. In addition, the performance of an asset allocation fund is heavily dependent upon the performance of the underlying funds in which it invests. As a result, this kind of fund is subject to the same risks as those faced by the underlying funds. Those risks include, but are not limited to, market risk, issuer risk, volatility risk, liquidity risk, investment advisor risk, loss of principal risk, as well as credit risk and interest rate risk. These and other risks are described in the funds prospectus. Investing in a mutual fund involves risks, including the possible loss of principal. The prospectus contains more complete information on the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of the fund, which investors should read and consider carefully before investing. How to Choose the Right Assisted Living Community

Assisted Living is often a great choice for our older generation looking for more activity and socialization in their lives, while offering assistance with daily activities such as housekeeping, laundry & meal preparation. Assisted Living can also provide non-medical care such as medication management and assistance with dressing, bathing, ambulating and incontinence care. Some Assisted Living Communities also provide special Dementia Care as well as partner with Hospice Agencies. Looking for the right Assisted Living can be a daunting task. Be careful not to be sold solely on the attractiveness of a community, and dont wait for a crisis situation to begin looking. Below is a list of some things to keep your eyes open for when beginning your search:
Cleanliness: Look around. Dont forget the sniff test! Friendliness: Observe staff interacting with current residents. Are they listening, smiling & making eye contact? Activities: Ask to see the activity schedule. Are they offering activities to match your loved ones interests? Observe. Are both the residents & the staff enjoying the activities? Meals: Discuss entre choices and how special diets and/or requests are accommodated. Review a weekly menu to look for healthy options. If not offered, ask for a complimentary meal to taste the food. This is also a great way to get a good feel of the ambiance of the community and to meet some of the current residents. The dining room experience is an important and major part of each residents day. Caregiving: Again, observe the current residents to insure they are well-groomed and dressed appropriately. Ask about the staffs training and qualifications while discussing your or your loved ones specific needs. How do they handle emergencies? Safety & Security: Ask about staffing procedures during the day versus at night. What time are the doors locked? Do all visitors sign in? Look for grab bars, emergency call buttons & other safety features. Location: Is the location convenient for family members to visit? Also, ask if there are any restrictions on visiting hours. Rates: In addition to the monthly rate, are there any community or move-in fees? Be sure you understand what the monthly rate includes. Ask about any additional charges. What would cause the rate to increase and what is the highest it could go? Dementia: What is the communitys philosophy on how those with a dementia diagnosis are cared for? Are the caregivers specially trained in Memory Care? Are the activities geared toward those with memory impairment? Is the area safe and secure? Other Residents: Ask them how they like the community. They are your best source for a recommendation (or not). Overview: Have all your questions been answered satisfactorily? Do you feel welcome and comfortable? Is the staff respectful & sincere? Can you picture yourself or your loved one living at the community and enjoying time with the other residents that youve met? Would you/they feel safe, loved and valued in this new home? Trust your instincts and your heart!

We are truly honored to be voted as Auburns Best Assisted Living Community. Thank you for your trust and your support. Through ongoing education and employee excellence we will continue to deliver exceptional care to our residents and their families. We look forward to continuing to serve the needs of our community.

Together we make a family.

Theres a new doctor in town

Definition
Plantar Fasciitis is an inflammation caused by excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. The plantar fascia is a broad band of fibrous tissue which runs along the bottom surface of the foot, attaching at the bottom of the heel bone and extending to the forefoot. When the plantar fascia is excessively stretched, this can cause plantar fasciitis, which can also lead to heel pain, arch pain, and heel spurs.

Cause
Plantar Fasciitis often leads to heel pain, heel spurs, and/or arch pain. The excessive stretching of the plantar fascia that leads to the inflammation and discomfort can be caused by the following: Over-pronation (flat feet) which results in the arch collapsing upon weight bearing A foot with an unusually high arch A sudden increase in physical activity Excessive weight on the foot, usually attributed to obesity or pregnancy Improperly fitting footwear Over-pronation (flat feet) is the leading cause of plantar fasciitis. Over-pronation occurs in the walking process, when a persons arch collapses upon weight bearing, causing the plantar fascia to be stretched away from the heel bone. With Plantar Fasciitis, the bottom of your foot usually hurts near the inside of the foot where the heel and arch meet. The pain is often acute either first thing in the morning or after a long rest, because while resting the plantar fascia contracts back to its original shape. As the day progresses and the plantar fascia continues to be stretched, the pain often subsides.

Treatment and Prevention

The key for the proper treatment of plantar fasciitis is determining what is causing the excessive stretching of the plantar fascia. When the cause is over-pronation (flat feet), an orthotic with rearfoot posting and longitudinal arch support is an effective device to reduce the over-pronation and allow the condition to heal. If you have usually high arches, which can also lead to plantar fasciitis, cushion the heel, absorb shock and wear proper footwear that will accommodate and comfort the foot. Other common treatments include stretching exercises, plantar fasciitis night splints, wearing shoes that have a cushioned heel to absorb shock, and elevating the heel with the use of a heel cradle or heel cup. Heel cradles and heel cups provide extra comfort, cushion the heel, and reduce the amount of shock and shear forces placed during everyday activities. Every time your foot strikes the ground, the plantar fascia is stretched. You can reduce the strain and stress on the plantar fascia by following these simple instructions: Avoid running on hard or uneven ground, lose any excess weight, and wear shoes and orthotics that support your arch to prevent over-stretching of the plantar fascia. If problem persists, consult your foot doctor.

HOW TO

HOW T O CARE FOR SOMEONE WITH DEMENTIA

When a loved one starts to forget, we wonder if they have Dementia. We joke about it as we grow older. We laugh when we cant find something. But when this starts to occur over and over again, we cant help but think, is there something more happening? The word dementia comes from the Latin de meaning apart and mens from the genitive mentis meaning mind. Dementia is the progressive deterioration in cognitive function the ability to process thought (intelligence). Dementia is not a disease in itself and not everyone who gets old gets dementia. Dementia is a symptom of something else that is going on in the body. Dementia has over 70 different causes. A urinary tract infection can cause dementia like symptoms and recently they have found that sleep apnea may be a cause for dementia. So do you care for someone with Dementia? No one chooses what will affect them when they get older. As we get older things happen that we have no control over and we have to adjust. The problem comes when others expect us to react like we used to and now there are other factors in our mind or body that cause us not to respond like we have in the past. We know that we should behave, respond, or answer and yet because of a disease or malady in our lives, we are not able to perform. It is not only frustrating for us but for our loved ones who care for us. The first step in caring for someone who may have dementia is finding out the reason why it is happening. Make an appointment with your regular doctor or a doctor with whom the person feels comfortable. Your primary doctor may refer you to a neurologist who specializes in diseases of the brain and nervous system. It is important to obtain a correct diagnosis as to why this is happening. Alzheimers dementia may not be treated in the same way as Lewy Body Dementia or Vascular Dementia. You want to get the proper care for the type of dementia that your loved one has. Once you have the correct diagnosis you can then plan what your next steps in caring for this person are. Depending on the severity and type you may want to explore: Adult day care programs In home care by professionals or private caregivers Making changes to your home environment Obtaining support from other family members or friends to assist you. Whatever you decide as you progress along this journey with your loved one is that you will need a lot of patience and understanding. Remember, they are not choosing to be difficult or not respond to your question. It is because of what they are going through that makes this difficult for them. If you would like more information about dementia or other services, please feel free to contact us.

WHY CHOOSE A SPECIALTY A UTOMOTIVE REPAIR SHOP?

We understand the frustration that comes from looking for the right automotive repair shop...
Its time to get your vehicle serviced. You look through the phone book or search the Internet and find so many choices. In life, choices are good, but often confusing. You call all the listed automotive shops and get so many different opinions, prices and ideas that your mind starts wondering. Who is right? Who is the best-qualified person to work on your vehicle? What kind of parts do they use? What about a warranty? Will it keep your vehicle under the manufacturers warranty? There are so many more questions, but Jimmy Mullenix, CEO/President of The Master Technicians, Inc. and Stacy Graham, our service manager, can help. They understand the frustration that comes from looking for the right automotive repair shop. Jimmy opened The Master Technicians in 1993 after working for Toyota dealerships for more than 23 years. He saw a need for customers wanting an independent specialty repair automotive shop. When opening, he knew that he was only going to specialize in Toyota, Honda, Acura and Lexus vehicles. For the past 20 years, those are the only vehicles Master Technicians has worked on. Jimmy and Stacy say: First things first, talk to your family and friends. Talk to the people who drive the same model vehicle you have. They are your most reliable source in recommending a repair shop. Then consider the following questions: Are the technicians ASE certified? What is the warranty? Do they give written Jimmy Mullenix and Stacy Graham estimates? How long have they been in business? Are the technicians factory trained? Will the work done maintain my manufacturers warranty? Do they use OEM parts? You may ask, What is the difference between someone who states they specialize on certain makes, but works on everything, and someone who specializes on certain makes and only works on those? An automotive repair shop like Master Technicians that specializes and only works on certain makes of vehicle has all the proper equipment, special tools and factory-trained technicians to do the work right, the first time. They have access to the manufacturers specifications and newest data. They have the special manuals. And since they only work on a few makes of vehicles, they probably know the strange sounds you may hear or the intermittent problem you may be experiencing. So the best choice may be an independent specialized automotive repair shop. Also, we have been told many times, that you have to return to the dealer to keep the manufacturers warranty up to date. You can choose to take your vehicle to any licensed repair facility that you are comfortable with. You do not have to return to the dealer for your maintenance items. With the tools we have given you, you should feel more confident about who you choose and trust to service your vehicle.
