Subject: History Topic: Context and Build-Up to the Vietnam War Grade: 10 Duration: 45 minutes Goals: Students will

l become familiar with the events leading up to the Vietnam War Students will understand the historical context and significance of the Vietnam War Students will learn names, dates, and terms relevant to the onset of the Vietnam War Objectives: Students will organize important people, concepts, and events relevant to the Vietnam war into a word web graphic organizer (B.12.8) Students will complete a reading guide with information gleaned from a secondary source as well as the input from other group members (B.12.2) In a simulated journal, students will explain the rationale used by the United States to justify military intervention in Vietnam (B.12.3) Materials: Word web graphic organizer Vietnam reading Vocabulary reading guide LBJ Simulated Journal Procedure: Pre-Reading (5 minutes, 5 minutes running) Students will complete word web organizer on their own (5 minutes, 10 minutes running) Two/three students will be asked to share their word webs in front of the class During Reading (15 minutes, 25 minutes running) Students will read their section of the Vietnam reading, filling out the Vocabulary reading guide as they read (5 minutes, 30 minutes running) Students will participate in a small group (3-4 members) discussion to fill out the remaining vocabulary terms Reflection (10 minutes, 40 minutes running) Students will complete the LBJ Simulated Journal on their own (5 minutes, 45 minutes running) Two students will share their journals in a grand discussion Assessment

Pre-Reading Students should have a word web of at least 4 items During Reading Students should have every blank in their vocabulary reading guide correctly filled out Reflection Students should have completed the Simulated journals with 1) A clear thesis and 2) At least three topics, names, or themes relevant to their assigned reading
