bstract: This paper presents a part of anthropogeographic research of population and
its origin in one of the oldest and historically most important settlements at the territory
of Zmijanje, a smaller regional area in the western part of Srpska Republic. The
settlement, which has always been populated with ethnic Serbs, is today facing an
extreme outflow of population, being at the edge of its survival.

POPULATIOJ ORIGIJ OF GORJJE RATKOVO
Summary
Based on the field research, as well as on the written resources, it can be concluded that
most of the families in the settlement belong to the group of indigenous (olds in the
village). Gornje Ratkovo, like many other settlements in the Srpska Republic (Bosnia
and Herzegovina), which are situated near the entity line with Federation of BiH, and
also far enough from any local, subregional or regional center, in the hills and
mountains area, records continuous decrease of total population and in general a
negative demographic development (in 1961:1989 inhabitants, in 2010:254 inhabitants).
In that period, due first of all to the change of residence migrations, changes in
physiognomic, functional and anthropogeographic characteristics can be recorded.
