Smart materials _ materials that have one or more properties that can be significantly altered in a controlled fashion by external stimuli, such as stress, temperature, moisture, pH, electric or magnetic fields. - Wikipedia

Wired / mechanical systems _ current systems of interactive / reactive / sensing

architectural built components. A defined system of responses to stimulus.

Embedded intelligence systems _ the idealized concept of intelligent materials,

where the material begins to define its parameters from a bottom up self-organizing system. Nonprogrammable response to stimulus.

Smart dust - The goal of the Smart Dust project is to build a self-contained, millimeter-scale
sensing and communication platform for a massively distributed sensor network. This device will be around the size of a grain of sand and will contain sensors, computational ability, bi-directional wireless communications, and a power supply, while being inexpensive enough to deploy by the hundreds. Piezoelectric - materials that produce a voltage when stress is applied.

Self repairing plastics - microcapsules, which were used by Scott White of the University of
Illinois to create a self-repairing plastic. His group inserted tiny beads of "healing agent" into a material. The agent is activated by impact, like a glow stick, to patch up any fractures.

Shape memory alloys - Thermo responsive materials where deformation can be

induced and recovered through temperature changes. One way and two way shape memory.

Halochromic - materials are commonly materials that change their color as a result of changing
acidity. One suggested application is for paints that can change color to indicate corrosion in the metal underneath them.

Chromogenic systems - change color in response to electrical, optical or thermal

changes. These include electrochromic materials, which change their color or opacity on the application of a voltage (e.g. liquid crystal displays), thermochromic materials change in color depending on their temperature, and photochromic materials, which change color in response to light - for example, light sensitive sunglasses that darken when exposed to bright sunlight.
