Experiment 13 Enzymes in Everyday Life January 21, 2014 Enzymes are one of the biomolecules that are needed in the body. They are the ones that speed up a reaction that is happening in our system. Some reactions of the body produce these by-products which are destructive to us. In this experiment, it made me realize how fast these enzymes worked, how it speeds up reactions in our body. Just like in this experiment, it is only short but I had learned a lot. Like the one with the hydrogen peroxide. 1st test tube is control, 2nd test tube is with the liver, and the 3rd is with a pinch of ferric nitrate. Of course the 1st test tube has only the hydrogen peroxide so no change occurs. But in the 2nd test tube, when we put the liver, bubbles formed and it cleanses the liver. And we observed there is a change in the color of the liver and more bubbles formed. It is the same when it is put in wounds. Because hydrogen peroxide is for cleansing and it is also to avoid infection in the wound that you have. The last test tube has ferric nitrate. At first it only changed in color but later on, there are bubbles formed and the solution became hot. It shocked me when we came to the professor to have it checked because it suddenly somehow popped and changed the color. In the genuine honey part, 2 test tubes were placed in a water bath at a exact temperature of 40 deg. C. then later on added 2 drops of iodine solution. The one with the honey formed 2 layers of liquid, one with the yellow part and the middle, the clear part. The second test tube had only the starch solution and the results was the solution only changed from clear to somehow yellowish.
