Introduction

Migration is not a new phenomenon in the Middle East and this is

especially the case for the countries of the Gulf Cooperation Council
.
(GCC) that since the oil boom of the 1970s have relied heavily on both
skilled and unskilled foreign labour to develop their economies. The
Middle East accounts nowadays for over ten percent of the worlds total
.
migrants with the oil-rich countries of the Persian Gulf hosting the

highest concentration of migrant workers in the world. Migration in the
region has a diverse face with the presence of legal migrants,
.
undocumented migrants, refugees and special groups. The growing
.
interest of governments, academic institutions and the media, has
produced in the last years a noticeable amount of specialised literature ,
(both in Arabic and in other languages) that specifically addressing ) (
.
Middle East international migration. Government officials concerned

with migration, lawmakers, researchers, and more widely international
migration experts and practitioners have increasingly felt the need to
utilise specialised terminology into Arabic that could accurately describe
.
the multi-layered dimensions of migration. This English/Arabic/French
/ /
lexicon of migration terminology is the by-product of different activities
carried out in the last few years by the Cairo Mission with Regional
.
Functions for the Middle East of the International Organization for

Migration (IOM). Although Arabic is not an official IOM language, a

number of basic migration documents have been translated into this
.
language to be used during conferences and other events while

specialised terminology has been used and refined to support capacity
building initiatives targeting government officials of IOM Arab member .
states. All these efforts have been finally brought together here and
.
resulted in this initial attempt to facilitate the consolidation of migration-
specialised terminology in Arabic. The lexicon does not pretend to be a

setting-stone scientific linguistic piece, but simply an easy and practical
.
supporting tool for IOM missions and counterparts working with Arabic.

IOM Cairo is thankful to all those fine colleagues who with their
.
dedicated and continuous work have contributed to this small - but
2004 /
hopefully useful - accomplishment.
