Eid Party

Making Pizza
This morning T. Huda offered the children who were interested the
opportunity to make pizza to share for our Eid lunch whiles other
children choose to do some physical activity. The children started by
taking turns to add the dry ingredients, counting out the measurements
together. Once the ingredients were added everyone enjoyed stirring,
some stirred very fast using all their muscles, while others were very
careful to keep everything in the bowl while miing. !e then offered
and reminded the children they could swap activities to ensure they get
to enjoy everything being offered during our cultural celebrations.
Once everyone had decided and were settled T. Huda began handing
the children a piece of dough each to kneed, which was met by loud
s"uels# $ome children found the sticky teture unpleasant while others
giggled as they looked ecitedly at T. Huda. %et came choosing what
toppings to use for our pizza. !e used tomatoes and cheese talking
about where they had come from, how the cheese helps our teeth and
bones while tomatoes have important vitamins. !e eplained that
although we grow tomatoes these ones were not from our garden as
ours had already been harvested earlier. Throughout the cooking time
the children could smell their creations cooking and were ecited to
share in the delicious meal.
What learning is occurring
here?
&ll children learn different
things from the same
eperience depending on
their individual skills,
knowledge and dispositions.
$ome possible learning
includes math concepts such
as counting, measurement,
colour, shape. $cience
concepts such as li"uid'solid
and the effect of heat were
eplored. The children were
encouraged to learn
alongside each other which
promoted prosocial strategies
such as turn taking, patience,
managing impulsivity,
listening with empathy and understanding, thinking
interdependently. The children who participated had
shown an interest and chose to be involved which is
evidence they are strengthening the dispositions of
trust,
playfulness, and curiosity. (neading the dough
involved strengthening their fine motor skills an
essential preparation for writing, while miing the
dough and adding ingredients used gross motor
skills, eye hand co)ordination and ability to
listen and follow simple instructions. The
children were involved in discussions
throughout that promoted their health and wellbeing through nutrition.
*onnecting links between home and centre as well as the wider
community was also possible through children+s other meaningful
eperiences such as cooking with mum or gardening with ,randdad.
What could we do to expand on these skills, dispositions and new
knowledge?
The children really enjoyed being part of a meaningful activity. They
were all very proud of their pizzas. -t is important to all of us that we
empower the children, build on their confidence as well as follow their
interests to develop a love for learning. !e will continue to build in
ways for the children to be involved meaningful throughout the day
within our routines, as well as follow this interest appropriately for the
individual children. .or some this may lead to dramatic play while for
others more sensory play.
