Ways of Seeing 4th October 2014

Creative Development:
This morning I looked more into monologues and stated
editing my personal statement so I can then put it on my
applications and get those ready.
Ways of Seeing:
Agreeing, disagreeing they all start to merge into one when
people just go on and on about shit! We are all agreeing on the
same idea but people start putting it in a weird perspective.
Lewis then gets annoyed when he tries to talk and either
someone cuts him up or says something and saying "fuck it, I
don't care anymore" and will put negativity in the space. Levi
wanted to go solemnly with his idea and wasn't willing to
adapt or change it, which put the rest of us in an awkward
position. There had to be some over ruling. We can up with a
story about evolving life with a couple and a dog, but the way
we add physical movement into it in front of the screen was
where we stopped agreeing. Levi wanted to di!erent pieces of
art with one small connection and the girls wanted the
'Medea' idea of mine to have story fade then emotion physical
piece then fade back to the story. At the end still have Levi's
isolation piece but add more physicality showing the elements
and the more abstract version to link back to the stimulus. In
the end we agree on incorporating both even though I did try
to compromise to make everyone happy, we have come to an
agreement and starting from tomorrow we are looking at the
rst part of the story and creating a physical piece on wind to
go with the story. And each day focus on another 1/4 parts to
the story and elements and then put them all together.
I'm looking forward to getting this completed and o! to a
start but we perform next Friday so we don't have a lot of
time, although we now have a screen where it's placed its

My Strengths
Leadership
This week I believe that this has
continued from last week my
leadership skills because I lead a
game with the rst and inter year
companies which is one of my aims
from the previous couple of weeks. I
never got to do the workshop I
intended but I lead a workshop and
have continued to be a leading force
in the HND company.
Professionalism
I believe this week I have very
professional in the space and when
other company members have been
negative as well as bringing their shit
in the space. I feel that
professionalism is something very
important to me and after what
Carleigh said at the end of the week I
felt I reected this.
Play
Carleigh said that we need to keep
playing and just experiment with ideas
and get loads of material and be able
to edit it down to the best bits, I felt
like I put forward people's ideas and
try everyone's and played inside that
to bring the piece more to life.

Ways of Seeing:
This morning we did a warm up and I lead a game with the 1st
yrs and inters of oh, take it, no. They were unfocused and I
tried running the game making sure they were in neutral and
getting them warm in more of a fun way instead of genetic
jogging. They weren't responding as well as I thought because
they were talking and don't give respect to us but I tried to be
fun but demanding so they knew what I wanted of them. I
ran something but I wanted to but I feel next time it will be
with a smaller group and I will make them listen!
Today the boys were not workable the girls were trying so
hard to create the physical piece we are suppose to be
performing next Friday. When Alex asked the room if
someone could help no one jumped of their seat and they sat
their on their phones and throwing a ball around not focused
and interrupting the space we were trying to work in. I
believe it is unfair to try and lead this without a directorial
gure helping and guiding us as a company, unlike being left
by ourselves to create a piece of theatre independently
without any guidance. They only give their I put when they
want and Levi is include in this, if they get the same grade as
me then that will prove unfair and unjust as they have not
given any or little contribution to the piece. I thought we did
alright today with creating some images but we didn't get as
far as what I thought or wanted, should always expect less
with our company when we should expect more.
At the end of the day a discussion starting again about
yesterday and what we have been doing and Alex was saying
no one was helping or joining in with the expect ion of
Connor. Levi went back to let's do my idea because it's better
when we are including his idea but adding more onto it to try
it out and no one is giving anything a chance. We all want it to
be its best but we are compensating for one another ideas and
respecting each other after I thought we have agreed we
haven't and Levi now isn't positively participating because
weren't not going with his idea. We are NOT working
productively or e!ectively as a company like we should be
doing and it's frustrating and stressful and I'm not happy

My Weaknesses
Lateness
I have been arriving late recently
because of money issues, but
after what Carleigh said I don't
feel like I am being an active
member in our company when
arriving late and missing out in
the ten minutes in the morning.
Stamina
During this week I feel I haven't
been lazy and have been active
but the durra till in which I can
hold this for is not long. When
someone starts explaining an
idea everyone starts sitting down
which gives o! a tired energy in
the room which is hard to pick
up and work in again.
Courage
When we were trying the lifts I
get really scared about this
because the only guy who used
to be able to lift me was Jake
Day and I trusted him, when I
was at school I always used to be
the only girl who had to be the
boy when lifting. I've been used
to this and now don't have faith
in myself when doing lifts, I
need to start acting more
fearless and giving it ago which I
started at the end of the week
but when we out lifts into our
piece I want to be one of the
people who have the courage to
do so.

which is not what I paid "4999 to spend a year doing.
Tomorrow we are going to create all the physical pieces, or more like that is the aim so we will just see
how that goes and if the negativity stays in the space or everyone brings a fresh energy tomorrow.

Ways of Seeing:
This morning I was determined that we get
something done and Daniella's suggestion of
working backwards and starting with Levi's
isolation piece and working backwards we
liked to we went with this. We spend most of
the day try to make every move perfect and I
said that we don't have to concentrate on
getting it so perfect because it is jagged so it
wouldn't notice, which is right. We were
focusing too much on these steps when we
could have come back to that later after we
got a structure of what we wanted to do. Levi did his egg on the oor while we in operated the
movements the boys created in their little routines that reminded me of DV8 but moulded them to
suit the music, which I think compliments our movements. We then started pulsating round Levi as
though he was being born and then went on to a di!erent part of the music to look about going into
Lewis's growth move after this. I came up with an idea for the how ever many counts it is to do a
rotating movement that will get us into this. When lming it, it's starting to take shape and look like
it is working. Again we need to be sharp and crisp on the movements together even if they are no
right as long as they are crisp and in time then the piece should look at its most a!ective.
Even though we only worked all in all three movements of the piece I think it is coming along and the
physical section is easier to devise than the shadow. I feel we do need to look at the shadow images
and start looking at adding transitions in as we have little time for this to all come together as we

perform next Friday. I predict that our Medea idea will be cut because we
don't have time to choreograph it and just do what Levi wants. I think if
we work hard enough we will be able to get this down to the potential we
should be at as a company. Lewis and Sam sat out all of today, Lewis to do
his work, which he should nd time to do in his own time that's why we
have it like this and not classes to do it during our rehearsal. I think Sam
wanted to get anyway with doing nothing so that it looked like he was
helping Lewis, he wasn't. I does frustrate me but after today when Alex
and I went up to talk to Carleigh she is going to look at our piece
tomorrow, what we have already and she is going to have a chat with us
about the company. She asked if we were jelling which our answer was no.
I am frustrated by this but only because I care about the work, even
though I don't nd myself drawn to physical theatre as an actor I do like
challenging myself to work in di!erent areas of my craft so I gain as many
skills as possible and not be narrow minded about it. Other people want
to just be an actor and don't want to join in because they are not
passionate, the work comes rst and the company need to realise this.
I'm happy with what we have achieved today but I always feel is little by
little each day when really we should have achieved what we have all
together now in at least three days. I don't think we are working or
putting the work rst and this upsets me but I want us to be able to
perform this piece which I believe has potential to it and show the rst
years what is possible and put our skills and knowledge to the test.

Ways of Seeing
Starting from where we left o! with Levi's choreography and moving
onto Lewis's growth movement; we worked these moves and there was
some confusion with which foot is which. I think with the choreography
doesn't need to be so precise because it's our interpretation of the
element or character we are embodying. We try to solve some of the
issues we were facing as a company and this morning we have been
working better together even though Lewis and Erol had a scru! this
morning, we still worked but I don't think we are doing it in a positive
atmosphere.
Calreigh came in and looked at what we have already, she stated with
showing us about shadow theatre and saying the little subtle things are
not noticeable and how we can only see shilouttes so our facial features
can't give away the message we are trying to portray to the audience.
Carleigh gave some examples which to me made more sense that we need
to be more economical and clearer with our movements so we are
conveying the message to the audience we want them to interpret.

Company Strengths
The Work
I feel that as a company the work is
starting to come rst and we have
made a lot of progress from last
week and am actually excited about
the following week about where we
will end up and how the week will
plan out. We have been productive
and the work we are producing is at
a good standard.
Teamwork
At the beginning of the week we
were not jelling well but towards
the end of the week we starting
being more productive and pro
active as a company and got a lot
more done, especially after
Carleigh's talk we know have got
everything out in the open. I just
want to work in a company who are
serious about the work.
Commitment
I feel like as a company this week
when we have gone with something
we have gone full heartedly and
given 100# and going on the back
of what Carleigh said you always
need to give yourself to the piece
which I feel we are doing now and
to one another.

Carleigh also mentioned that we need to be more strict on the work when we are looking at each
other's shadows and saying how it's coming cross if we are trying to be soft and someone is moving in
a more aggressive tone tell them to soften up their movements.
We then moved onto the choreography physical section and Carleigh said something I hadn't noticed
about being alive within our performance, I feel that I am taking the work too seriously and not
having fun because of how we are working, the company and the time limiting us. When Carleigh said
just do any random thing we were playing and having fun. Carleigh said with any good choreography
that we should be one step ahead of the audience and she said she knew that the fourth beat should
be changed so we freshen it up. I thought it did bring more life and after we did this and went back to
our original choreography it did feel like it was dragging and
being very reparative, if it feels like that with us then it will
denitely feel like that with our audience. I don't like the
changing placed but understand that we should change the
balance because we are in positions for the circle and it's to
complex to change everything around. I thought it was very
benecial to have Carleigh's point of view so that we have
another perspective on our piece however we haven't got to
change everything. We need to create more of the piece before we start editing but now we know
these notes and are more knowledgeable on the piece when we start creating the rest we can put these
into action from the beginning.
Claire later on came in and looked at our shadow work and gave us some really good tips and notes.
She told us to give ourselves more character which really helped me get into it and I don't know why
we haven't done this more, I feel awkward when doing the shadow theatre as a character instead of
doing gurative mine. Erol and me had to be both couples as Daniella and Charley were absent today,
Claire told us we need to present and give moments before doing an action so the audience clock and
digest what is about to happen. We showed the ring and she told us to be more realistic with what
happened if someone did propose to you, you would kiss them. On the shadow we looked at kissing
and making this look a!ective as well as how we enter and leave. As well with the married couple
Charley being more like a clown and me playing it more sassy, I'm the wife who treats him like a child
and always tries to make him look perfect. We played and experimented but I think it will look better
when the other couples return. We got some great tips but I think we need to add noises and more
physically to our characters like Lewis did, even though you can't see the facial expressions like
Carleigh said every detail counts. We then looked at some lifts with Claire, we
were taught:

The Candle Stick
More advanced move, base is in
semi supine and the yer grabs
onto their shoulder blades
whilst the yer pushes against
the bases legs and does a hand

King of the World
The base gets into
squat position and the
yer places one leg into
their hip and the other
leg onto the bases
shoulders. Hands let go
if comfortable.
Flying
Flyer runs towards base who
holds their hands out, their
shoulder in yers hip, one
hand on their lower back and
the other wrapped round the
front of the leg so when the
yer jumps the base pushes
the leg up and the yer rests
on their shoulders.

Ways of Seeing
Repeating Levi's sequence of the physical isolation piece this morning and we edited the piece down
as a company and taught Daniella. This week not everyone has been in everyday so it has been hard to
rehearse to our fullest but we have coped and adapted to our best and got the work done. Today for
me was the most productive day I feel we have spend as a company on this process mainly because
there was some of the more distracting boys present. We took on Carleigh's notes from the physical
and added them to the piece making sure that the audience we never one step ahead of us and
changed it up, we started to polish some of the moves so that they were a lot cleaner and everyone
was on the same page. Levi shared his idea of what he visioned the ending of the piece to be

incorporating what he has done before in the rites of passage process
with the quick change. I think this will look very a!ective and the
audience will be as amazed as we were when we watched that. Levi
had a vision of him being in the middle and all of us ripping shreds of
him and walking o! leaving him ripped isolated centre stage.
I brought the idea up as we wanted to use lifts to take what we did in
Sams workshop with the intimidating movements to add lifts to if.
Levi is in the middle and it's as though we are vultures circling our
prey before we go in for the kill; my idea also combined the idea of
black swan the lm where she is Turing on stage in the nal piece. I
reckon this could be a very strong way to end but I do feel we need to
know why we are doing some moves and what they are representing
like Carleigh asked us so when it comes to the Q&A we know we are
all on the same book with the piece, message and the movements. We
played a few games in the afternoon to lighten the serious mode
which helped but sometimes Connor makes comments that are and
sometimes not a joke but we can't tell and it creates a horrible
awkward atmosphere to come back from in the space. I felt today we
did work well as a company and we got a lot done, next week when we
do lates we will denitely get the piece ready and all we need to get
ready is the shadow work, but this is hard without the partners here.

Company Weaknesses
Absence
A lot of people have not been on
the oor this week, some for good
reason like funerals or they feel
down the stairs but I feel that we
need to work as a company,
meaning that we are a full company
with everyone in. Now we will have
to teach everything to charley so
instead of moving forward we will
be going backwards and that's not
the way I want to move.
Putting Shit in the
Space
This week there has been a lot of
awkward pauses and arguments in
the space and I think it's down to
frustration mainly. Lewis was
getting angry at Erol and we all
tried to calm him down. He goes
o! in a mood and it's hard to get
him to join in when he just sits at
the side "not caring", then
something will annoy him and he
will put his opinion in. Connor as
well is guilty of this. We don't need
this in the space, take it outside!
Pedantic
Some members of the company are
trying to get it right and keep
polishing when we need to just
move on and they focus so much on
the little details that we shouldn't
be worried about. I'm a
perfectionist but personally I just
want to make sure we have a
structure of a piece and we know
what we want to them lol at the
ner details.
