Onam Celebrations
The Department of Catering Science & Hotel Management of SNR Sons College (Autonomous),
Coimbatore celebrated Onam festival in the college premises on 5
th
September 2014, with pomp
and splendor. The occasion was inaugurated by Dr.Ebenizer Jayakumar, DirectorAcademics of
SNR Group of Institutions, presided over by Dr.H.Balakrishnan, Principal of SNR Sons College
(Autonomous) and was graced by Principals, Deans and faculty members of various Institutions
belonging to SNR Sons Group. The celebration gave an insight into Onam, the most revered
ancient festival of Kerala which is symbolic of King Mahabalis annual home-coming as well as
celebration of the Vaman avatar of Lord Vishnu. It also provided a platform for the students to
experience a unique celebration of secular nature. The festive spirit was brought out by the
Athapookalam, the characteristic floral designs symbolic of this festival, Onam Sadya, a most
elaborate and grand meal including 14 traditional dishes which were prepared and served by the
students of the department, a short film, an exhibit and vegetable carving, all based on Kerala
and Onam celebrations. The grand success of the function was due to the untiring and
enthusiastic efforts of the students and staff under the guidance of the Director, Dr S.Deena of
the department of Catering Science & Hotel Management.
