On December 27, 1991, a Scandinavian Airlines System (SAS) flight bound for
Warsaw, Poland, with a stop in Copenhagen, Denmark, left Stockholm, Sweden, with 129
people aboard. Unfortunately, the plane did not reach either destination.
Just moments after the plane had taken off, the pilot, Captain Stefan Rasmussen,
reported engine trouble. At an altitude of 2,000 feet, the plane had lost power in both
engines. As the plane was going down, the pilot tried to find a suitable landing site. He flew
through the tops of some trees to slow down the plane. Just a minute before the final crash,
the plane was travelling at about 155 miles per hour (250 kilometres per hour).
The plane crashed in an icy field. Because of all the ice and snow in the field, the
plane slid for about 100 yards (90 meters). The plane broke into three sections. Although
the fuel tanks were almost full, there was no fire.
Amazingly, no one died. Most of the 122 passengers and 7 crew walked away
unaided. Many of them got out of the plane through the gaps between the three pieces.
About 40 people were injured, 7 of them seriously. Captain Rasmussen had head and neck
injuries.
The captain had to make many sudden decisions that affected the outcome of this
event. The fuel tanks were almost full. The plane had lost power in both engines. In spite of
these factors, everyone survived the crash. It is a miracle.
