The frontcourt players for Illinois, including Mike Tisdale, Mike Davis, and Bill Cole, did not score much but they did play good defense, allowing few points. The backcourt played well, with Jeff Jordan getting his first start and recording 5 assists with no turnovers in the win. The bench provided a boost, with Demetri McCamey and D.J. Richardson scoring off the bench. Overall, while it wasn't a high-scoring game, it was an effective team performance that led to a Big Ten victory over Iowa, though it was noted that Iowa has the worst team in the league.

Bill Cole didn’t put up big numbers. They did give them up either. Even if this game was more about effort and looking pretty, as coach Bruce Weber suggested, the Illini bigs probably needed a little more production. Backcourt: B Jeff Jordan didn’t score in his first college start, but he finished with five assists and no turnovers plus a win. That’s a good stat line for a point guard. Brandon Paul is still searching. Bench: A When you bring Demetri McCamey and D.J. Richardson off the bench against Iowa, it’s a big boost. Rich- ardson took a step forward in Weber’s desire for better shot selection. Mc- Camey didn’t worry about scoring and dished out six of his seven assists in the first half. Overall: B+ While this one wasn’t the pretty high- scoring game that Illinois showed early in the nonconference season, it was an effective performance for a Big Ten victory. Iowa is the worst team in the league, so don’t get too excited. Let’s see if there’s a carryover against Indiana on Saturday. Grades by JOHN SUPINIE
