Ms. Scott's weekly newsletter provides a summary of activities from April 20-24 at the school. The week focused on Earth Day activities like crafts using recycled materials and a garbage pickup. On Wednesday, Mrs. Keiver shared the Circle of Courage and Mrs. DeCosse spoke to grade 3s about transitioning to McKim School. In math, Ms. Scott introduced a new double digit addition strategy of rounding one number to the closest multiple of ten. The upcoming week includes a lockdown practice and a field trip to Garden View Village.

Our school whole-heartedly celebrated Earth Day with an entire week of activities in each class. We are working on a couple of different Earth Day craft activities with recycled materials supplied by Mrs. Driscoll. One of the crafts will be the Mothers Day gift, so I have asked the kids to keep it a happy secret. Monday we did our part by picking up garbage down the alley behind the school and on Trail Street. Mrs. Keiver joined us Wednesday to share the Circle of Courage. We went outside to play with the coloured flags she uses to represent the four colours of the circle as well as blue for water. I will post pictures to our class blog. Also on Wednesday Mrs. DeCosse from McKim came up to speak to the grade 3 students about the transition to McKim in the Fall. The grade 2s planted various plant scraps in compost and we also suspended them with toothpicks in jars of water. Friday was our third and final recognition assembly. The kids were excellent in their Boomwhackers performance. This week in Math I introduced another strategy for solving double digit addition. In this method students learn to round one number to the closest multiple of ten by borrowing that amount from the other number. It relies on students remembering their friendly number combinations (1+9, 2+8, 3+7, etc). I encourage them to round the number that requires the least amount of borrowing. E.g. 23 21 + 2 + 38 = 21 + 40 = 61 +38 I am encouraging students to try all 3 methods (carry over, break it out, round to tens) so they can see which one works best for them. We are doing A LOT of practice in class.
Upcoming Weeks: April 27 May 1
