GRADE ONE/TWO NEWS

May 2015

Sturgeon Creek School

Thank You Thank You!

The Grade One/Two students would like to thank Addisons family for donating a
math game and 2 books to our classroom. The
game Monkeys Go Bananas is a wonderful way to
practice our addition and subtraction facts! After
listening to the stories, Count the Monkeys and
Pass It On, the books has been placed in our class
library for all students to take home and enjoy!

Class Blog can be accessed at

I also would like to send my appreciation to families for helping us prepare for our
Spring Tea by listening to your child(ren) read the poem and music selections.
This extra practice will help students gain fluency, expression, and feel more confident when performing for an audience!

Spring Tea
On Tuesday, May 5th, at 1:00 students will be participating in our schools annual
Spring Tea. Our class will be presenting one poem and 2 songs. The audience
will also be privileged to enjoy a sneak peek of 3 songs from the schools Shrek
Play. We look forward to having you join us for our celebration of Spring!

school. Please find attached to this newsletter a fieldtrip consent form. When I
receive information from the pool regarding rules, I will send those home as well.

Math
We are currently studying measurement in Math.
Students have been learning about strategies and
tools to use when estimating, measuring, comparing, and recording :

Language Arts
Students are enjoying our new writing topic
Procedural Writing.
We started off our unit looking at examples of
everyday procedures such as:

Length (height/width/distance)

Recipes

Area

Craft Instructions/Patterns

Mass

First Aid Guides

Capacity

Vehicle Manuals

Time

Students are learning about the importance of:

Selecting the right size unit compared to the

object being measured

Then we completed an experiment by following a

procedure How To Plant Tulip Bulbs Indoors (since I didnt get the bulbs I bought for
home planted outdoors last Fall!

Using the same sized unit when estimating

and measuring an object

Not overlapping or leaving gaps between

units when measuring area or length

Starting exactly and one end and exactly to

the opposite end when measuring length

Using the length, mass, capacity or area of

an object you know to help you make a reasonable estimate for an unknown object

Making sure the scale is balanced BEFORE

measuring with it

Filling containers evenly to the top

Letting your child help you measure or estimate at
home will increase their understanding of the importance of Math in the real world!

PLACE
STAMP

Next students worked with a partner to write a

procedure they were both familiar with. Topics
included, How to Train Your Cat to Come, How
to Go Fishing, and How to Ride a Horse. Students are very interested in this form of writing
and I look forward to posting their work on our
class blog.

Soon students will be choosing their own topics

and will write a procedure independently!
Finally we plan to follow a procedure as a culminating celebration of this fun type of writing!

Cody and Scarlett discovered that Cody is about the same length
as 6 non-fiction National Geographic books!

To reinforce skills taught at school, you can share

with your child(ren) examples of when you follow
procedures at home (e.g. fire extinguisher instructions, medication instructions, seed planting instructions etc.)
