Introduction to Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Product Overview

Flexi Multiradio BTS is a base transceiver station that is part

of the Nokia Siemens Networks Flexi BTS platform for

GSM/EDGE, WCDMA, and LTE networks.
It is a multiradio or multicarrier BTS that can use all these
network technologies either in dedicated or concurrent
mode of operation
Its modular design makes site acquisition and installation
easy, and reduces the time needed for rolling out network
coverage in a new area.
It allows using existing site space efficiently, the existing
Flexi BTS modules can be installed together with Flexi
Multiradio BTS modules.
The existing Flexi BTS cabinets and casings, power supplies,
and the 3G Flexi System Module can be used with Flexi
Multiradio modules.

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Architecture

Flexi Multiradio Architecture basic principles

Both GSM/EDGE and WCDMA/LTE have own separate system

modules when the BTS is used in concurrent mode having several
operational modes simultaneously.
The radio modules (RFM and RRH) as well as the antenna lines
could be shared between the system modules.
The interconnections between the system modules and the radios
can be routed through one system module or the connections can
be separate from both system modules.
In concurrent operation Flexi MR BTS is seen as two separate
logical network elements with common radio resources.

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Architecture

Main functions of the modules

The System Module is the center of the system. It has all the
external interfaces of the BTS (apart from the antenna interfaces).
Main functions of the System Module are the Transport, BTS O&M,
synchronization, power distribution and baseband processing
functions. System Module interfaces support up to four Radio
Modules with local power feed. Radio modules are connected to
System Module through RP3-01 interfaces.

The Radio modules and RRHs contain both RF BB and RF

functions. They are multistandard and multicarrier transceivers.
RF BB includes RP3-01 interface with multifunctional ASICs and
controller. In addition of TX/RX lineups module has integrated front
end. RFM front end will be implemented with SW tunable filters.
RRH will have fixed full band filters.

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE RF Module (FXxA)

General Information (1/7)
RF Module (FXxA) consist of 3 independent branches (pipes), which is
optimized for 3 sector Macro BTS use.
Each branch (pipe) can transmit and receive multicarrier signals of multiple radio
technologies concurrently, therefore:
RF combining and BTS internal RF cabling is not needed (no need combining losses
in the Link Budget calculations)
Flexi EDGE TRXs cannot be reused for Multiradio BTS

General Information (4/7)
Each RFM branch (pipe) can support several carriers (frequency blocks for
WCDMA/LTE and virtual TRXs in case of GSM/EDGE) within the available RFM
bandwidth or the bandwidth can be shared between different technologies
Up to 6 carriers can be defined for GSM/EDGE (independently on RFM
bandwidth)
Carriers can be defined using 100 kHz frequency raster (minimum 400 kHz of
the carrier separation needs to be kept between GSM/EDGE carriers)

General Information (5/7)
In the concurrent mode there is a limited number of carrier configurations

Dedicated SW features need to be used to enable RFM sharing between
different technologies (concurrent mode) - apart from the HW capabilities (max
no of carriers per pipe) the list of supported carrier combinations is determined
by the features

Flexi Mutiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Sharing Session

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE RF Module (FXxA)

General Information (6/7)
The nominal output power at the antenna connector for the 3-sector RFM is 60W
per branch (pipe)
The nominal output power at each branch (pipe) is the maximum cumulated sum
of output powers of all the carriers/TRXs within that branch
The output power per carrier of a radio branch decreases with the increasing number
of carriers in the radio branch
The output power of each carrier/TRX within the branch can be adjusted separately

The carriers can be split to multiple radio branches within one sector to increase
the output power and thus the BTS coverage

Flexi Mutiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Sharing Session

Flexi Multiradio BTS GSM/EDGE RF Module (FXxA)

General Information (7/7)
In case of concurrent mode the nominal output power at each branch (pipe) is
shared between carriers of different technologies
There is a fixed share of the nominal output power of each branch (pipe) between
technologies
Then, the output power dedicated to each technology is distributed among defined
carriers (GSM) or limited according to installed license (LTE)
Dedicated SW features need to be used to enable RFM sharing between different
technologies
RG10/RU20: RF sharing WCDMA GSM
RG25/RL20: RF sharing 2G LTE
Maximum output power per carrier is determined by supported in the feature RF
configurations

The target receiver sensitivity of Flexi Multiradio BTS is to be at least the same
as of the existing Flexi EDGE
Receive sensitivity to be the same
as with existing Flexi EDGE BTS

Flexi BTS Power Options

Flexi Power Rectifier (FPRA) (1/3)
Is a new type of MIBBU
Provides the 48VDC voltage from external AC or DC voltage (batteries)
Compatible with Flexi BTS 19 mechanics and 3HU high. Can be used in Flexi cabinet

installations and without a cabinet.

Brings some new possibilities for Flexi applications:
FPRA outside FCSA => more LTE space inside FCSA
FPRA inside FCOA => more space for Flexi modules inside the cabinet as no need for FCSA
Consists of:
mechanics mountable to a 19 frame
Power distribution unit with scalabe outputs for max. 2 BTSs and max. 3 battery strings
Control Unit (CU) for controlling the FPRA. Alarms generated by CU are normal EAC-alarms

and can be connected to ESMA via the standard EAC-interface or power alarm interface (FPA).
Max. three 2 kW rectifiers (i.e. max output 3 * 2 kW = 6 kW)
Operating temperature range -33 to +55C
Wide operating voltage range: from 85 to 310VAC
Optional separate batteries (no space for batteries inside the FPRA module)

IP55 compatible, suitable for use in an outdoor cabinet without FCSA module and for
outdoor use without a cabinet with the module front and rear covers installed

Flexi Mutiradio BTS GSM/EDGE Sharing Session

Indoor cell range [km]

~2.0 ~2.0
RFM transmit power shared between several
carriers has similar impact on the cell range as
combiner losses in Flexi EDGE BTS
Significantly less HW elements required in case of
Flexi MR BTS observed especially for higher
BTS configurations
Cell ranges of Multiradio BTS are comparable with
Flexi EDGE BTS & BTSplus
