Kinematics Free-Body Diagram Lesson Plan

Author's Name: Jacob Colley

Subject Area(s): Physics
Academic Content Standards: Forces in Two Dimensions Net forces will
be calculated for force vectors with directions between 0 and 360 or a
certain angle from a reference (e.g., 37 above the horizontal). Vector
addition can be done with trigonometry or by drawing scaled diagrams.
Problems can be solved for objects sliding down inclines.
Technology Standard: Creativity and Innovation Students demonstrate creative thinking, construct
knowledge, and develop innovative products and processes using technology.
b.) Create original works as a means of personal or group expression.
Grade Level: 9-12
Time Required: 6 Days

Analyze Learners
17 grade level learners, 1 student without Internet permissions, 2 academically challenged

State Learning Objectives

Given a rubric, students will create a video project that covers and explains all the steps needed to create a
Free Body Diagram.

Select Methods (Strategies), Media, and Materials

Camcorder or Cell Phone, Computers, Editing Software
Differentiated Instructional Strategies
Students without Internet permissions will be in groups of people who do and only 1 computer is
needed to create a video.
Academically Challenged students will be split into groups. Part of the rubric will list that you
show full group participation. Hopefully the students will learn by participating in teaching a
subject to the students. Also any questions can be answered by other group members.

Utilize Media & Materials

Day 1: Students will begin listing the steps needed to create a Free Body Diagram and begin writing a
script for their video.
Day 2: The teacher will demonstrate the basics on how to use free video editing software basics so that
the students can feel confident in their ability to create a video. The teacher should also make sure that all
groups have access to this software and provide a computer in class if necessary.
Day 3-5: Students will use class free-time to begin recording or editing their videos. If they decide to do
their recording at home, make sure they have everything ready during class so that recording will go
smoothly at home.
Day 6: Students will turn in their videos and all the projects will be viewed by the class.

Require Learner Participation

Students will tell the teacher before beginning the project the steps they believe are needed to create a free
body diagram to make sure no steps are missed. Students will create a video project with a group of 4-5
people. Students will view other projects that have different ways of explaining the steps.

Evaluation
Academic Content
The students demonstrated their knowledge of the different forces acting on an object
demonstrated through free body diagrams.
21st Century Skills
Displaying Creativity and Innovation using existing material. Successful collaboration with a
partner.
Use of Technology
Students effectively created a video that conveyed the information to the audience.
Instruction of Lesson
If students understood material or not. If the material was properly described.
