s uit able arrangement . Oil is filled in t he fluid coupling from t he filling plug provided on it s body. A fus ible plug is
provided on the fluid coupling w hich blow s off and drains out oil from t he coupling in cas e of s us t ained
overloading.

There is no mechanical interconnect ion bet w een t he impeller and t he rot or ( i.e. t he driving and driven unit s )
and t he pow er is t rans mitt ed by virt ue of t he fluid filled in t he coupling. The impeller w hen rot at ed by t he prime
mover imparts velocit y and energy t o the fluid, w hich is convert ed int o mechanical energy in t he rot or t hus
rot at ing it .
The fluid follow s a clos ed circuit of flow from impeller t o rot or
t hrough t he air gap at t he out er periphery and from rot or t o
impeller again t hrough t he air gap at the inner periphery. To
enable t he fluid t o flow from impeller t o rot or it is es s ent ial
t hat there is difference in t he "head" bet w een t he t w o and
t hus it is ess ent ial t hat t here is difference in R .P.M., know n
as s lip bet w een t he t w o. Slip is an import ant and inherent
charact eris tic of a fluid coupling res ulting in s everal des ired
advant ages . A s t he s lip increases more and more fluid can be
t rans ferred from t he impeller t o t he rotor and more t orque is t rans mit t ed. How ever w hen the rot or is at
s t andst ill, maximum fluid is t ransmit t ed from t he coupling. The maximum t orque is limit ing t orque. The fluid

operations and ot her charact erist ics of load limit ing s hock & peak load abs orpt ion and dampening et c. By
varying t he quant it y of oil filled in t he fluid coupling, t he normal torque trans mit t ing capacity can be varied. The
maximum t orque of t he fluid coupling can als o be s et t o a pre-det ermined s afe value by adjus t ing t he oil filling.
The fluid coupling has t he s ame charact eris t ics in bot h direct ions of rotat ion.
