Q: Which are the three primary bonds?

Describe briefly how they form.

Three main types of

primary bonds
1.
2.
3.

Ionic bond
Covalent bond
Metalic bond

They are the strongest bonds.

Ionic bond

Is a bond created between a metal and

a non metal.
Created by transfer of electron
between two atoms(in-order to
complete valence in outer most shell)
In this bond metal lose electron and
become negatively charged, while
nonmetals gain electrons to become
positively charged.

Example: NaCl

Covalent bond

Created by pairing of electrons

Occur within elements of same type
They occur in-order to stable the shells
in an atom.

Example : H2 molecule

Metallic bond

It is a force of attraction between

valence electrons and the positive
metal ions
Electrons are free to move in this type
of bond and they act as a glue.

Example: silver
