Editing Case Study By

John Dumo

Cutting to the beat is when a sharp cut or transition is

made during the editing process.
This usually compliments the songs instrumental
An example of this is occurs in the song forever by
Drake. The scenes changes angles with each snare beat.
This suggest a high intensity section of the song as the
rapper Eminem lyrically catches fire.

Effects are used in a music video to add narrative to the

video, for example they will make explosions or
buildings crashing to the ground. An example of effects is
in The Weeknds Cant Feel My Face, where the use of
special effect allowed the artist to be set on fire
representing the lyrics of the song.

Visual Effects

Miming & lip syncing is a the use of software or

hardware to synchronize lip movement in correlation to
the song, creating an illusion as though the song is being
sung live.
This lip syncing technique has been used in countless
music videos but as an example I would use Bryson Tiller
Sorry not sorry. This music video is filled with
somewhat psychedelic scenes. In my opinion they show
memories from the past merging with the present.

Miming and Lip Syncing

This is when there is different types of shots that are

focusing on one target. Some videos there are parts where
the screen will split and have two different recordings in
each of the split.
Multi image is inserted during post production and is
more common in rock music able to show various angles
of the artist as well as their performance.

Multi Image

Chroma Key is usually used for special effects and used as a

technique to layer two images or video into one stream.
Chroma Key is based mainly on hue of a colour this most well
known form of Chroma Key editing is the use of a green screen.
An example of this is the song Let It Rock By Lil Wayne, the
whole music video consist of the two artist in front a green
screen and they utilize the use of post production editing.
