BAND SAW
A stationary machine tool used for cutting wood or metal into
non-linear shapes. Its blade is one continuous circle stretched
over two pulleys.

DRILL PRESS
A stationary machine tool used for drilling holes in various
materials.

BELT SANDER
A stationary power sander that uses a 1" continuous
abrasive belt for sanding wood or metal.

OSCILLATING SPINDLE
SANDER
A power sander that uses various diameter cylinders
covered with a sanding sleeve. The cylinder turns and moves
up and down to sand wood.

DISC SANDER
A power sander with a 12" sanding disc for sanding wood or
metal.

SCROLL SAW
A stationary fine-toothed power saw with a narrow blade
used for cutting small designs in wood.

TABLE SAW
A stationary saw with a large circular blade protruding
through the face of the table. A rip fence can be adjusted to
width to help guide the board as it is pushed through the
blade. This saw is primarily used for ripping lumber.

RADIAL ARM SAW


A stationary saw that has a circular blade suspended from
an arm above the work table. The height and angle of the
blade are adjustable. This saw is primarily used for cross and
angle cutting.

JOINTER
A stationary power tool used to true the edges of boards,
making them straight.

ROUTER/SHAPER
A stationary power tool with a shaped cutter blade for
forming the edge on wood boards.

THICKNESS PLANER
A stationary tool used to make the faces of a board flat and
parallel. Wood is fed between the roller/ knife and the table.

grinder

A machine tool used to grind, buff, or polish metal.

compound miter saw

A circular saw on a rotating vertical pivot and a horizontal


pivot. Used to crosscut right angles, miters and compound
miters.

Alternating Current

a flow of electrons across a conductor that continuously


changes direction and polarity

Direct Current
an electric current that flows in one direction steadily

drill chuck

a holding device consisting of adjustable jaws that center a


workpiece in a lathe or center a tool in a drill

RPM

measures how fast a motor is spinning

GFCI outlet

a device that detects current leakage from a circuit to


ground and shuts the current off. Detects any difference in
current between the two circuit wires (the black wires and
white wires)

powder actuated tools

a tool which used gun powder to work

reciprocating

A back and forth movement.
