BASIC HAND TOOLS IN

CARPENTRY AND THEIR USES

TOOL BELT

A tool belt is a belt worn around the waist, retaining pockets and loops made to contain tools and
equipment.

Tool belts are worn in many professional trades and other activities, and are typically used to transport
and maintain tools and material used at a worksite10.

HAND DRILL

Hand drills have been used by many primitive societies as a fire drill to start a fire. It is still often learned
as a useful survival skill.

A hand drill could also be used as a tool for drilling holes in hard materials such as wood, stone, or bone.

MEASURING TAPE

It is made up of materials like fiberglass, cloth, plastic, metal ribbon or strip. So, it is a kind of flexible
ruler also known as a tape measure. It is marked in centimeters and inches.

A measuring tape is a flexible tool used for measuring length.

SAND PAPER

Paper covered on one side with abrasive material (such as sand) glued fast

and used for smoothing and polishing.

SQUARE

A square is a tool used for marking and referencing a 90° angle, though mitre squares are used for 45°
angles.

Squares see common use in woodworking, metalworking, construction and technical drawing. Some
squares incorporate a scale for measuring distances (a ruler) or for calculating angles.

LEVEL

Carpenter's levels are used to verify the alignment of surfaces during any construction or renovation
process, no matter how big or small.

They can be used to determine both the horizontal alignment (level) and vertical alignment (plumb) of a
given surface or object and require very little training to use.

HAMMER
Hammers are designed according to the intended purpose.

Hammers are used for general carpentry, framing, nail pulling, cabinet making, assembling furniture,
upholstering, finishing, riveting, bending or shaping metal, striking masonry drill and steel chisels, and so
on.

SLIDING BEVEL

These tools are pivotal for many different kinds of construction jobs, especially for those in which the
ideal 90° angles are not possible.

A sliding T-bevel is an instrument that is used for both laying out and transferring angles.

NAIL PULLER

A nail puller is a simple tool specially designed to pull nails from wood (or sometimes other types of
material).

nail puller is a tool used by commercial woodworkers for extracting hard-to-remove nails.

NAIL SET

Nail sets are short, tapered bars of steel that serve as a companions to a hammer.
They are used for the final few blows onto the exposed heads of finish nails, sinking them beneath the
surface without collateral damage to the surrounding wood. Sometimes nail sets are also referred to as
nail punch tool.

HAND SAW

This is usually done in order to join the pieces together and carve a wooden object.

In woodworking and carpentry, hand saws, also known as "panel saws", are used to cut pieces of wood
into different shapes

CHISELS AND SCREW DRIVERS

A chisel is a tool with a characteristically shaped cutting edge of blade on its end

The tool can use mechanical power or can be struck with a mallet. In order to use a chisel, forcefully
insert the blade into the desired material to cut it. It can either be manual or the power operated one. A
screwdriver does the basic function of screwing or unscrewing of screws.

CARPENTER’S PENCIL

A carpenter pencil is a pencil that has a body with a rectangular or elliptical cross-section to prevent it
from rolling away. Carpenter pencils are easier to grip than standard pencils, because they have a larger
surface area.

Carpenter pencils are used by builders because they can mark on surfaces like concrete or stone.

UTILITY KNIFE
A utility knife is any type of knife used for general manual work purposes.

Utility knives are used to cut and trim a variety of building materials including: drywall, felt paper,
wallpaper, rope & twine, plastic sheet material, fiberglass insulation and more. They can be divided into
3 general categories, Retractable Blade, Fixed Blade and Snap-off Blade.

MALLET

A mallet is a tool used for imparting force on another object, often made of rubber or sometimes wood,
that is smaller than a maul or beetle, and usually has a relatively large head. The term is descriptive of
the overall size and proportions of the tool, and not the materials it may be made of, though most
mallets have striking faces that are softer than steel.

Mallets are used in various industries, such as upholstery work, and a variety of other general purposes.
It is a tool of preference for wood workers using chisels with plastic, metal, or wooden handles, as they
give a softened strike with a positive drive.

HAND PLANE

A hand plane is a tool for shaping wood using muscle power to force the cutting blade over the wood
surface.

Some rotary power planers are motorized power tools used for the same types of larger tasks, but are
unsuitable for fine-scale planning, where a miniature hand plane is used.
CARPENTRY POWER TOOLS AND
THEIR
USES

CIRCULAR SAW

Circular saws are a type of power tool designed to cut through wood and other construction materials.
They feature a sharp circular blade which rotates at speed to create cross cuts and rip cuts and are
available in a few different sizes determined by the size of blade they accept.

With the right blade, a circular saw can be used to cut framing lumber, sheet goods, roofing, metal,
masonry, and more. A powerful saw can be a major time-saver during demolition as well. Once you get
used to using your circular saw, you can even use it to cut curves

POWER DRILL

A power drill is a tool with an electrical motor that rotates a replaceable drill bit at your choice of speeds
to create a hole in a variety of materials. The drill can also take screwdriver bits, to allow easier driving
of screws through different materials.
Drills are primarily used for drilling circular holes in material, or for inserting screws and other threaded
fasteners into material. Drills are also available in the impact driver configuration, high-torque tools
primarily used for driving screws and tightening nuts.

RANDOM ORBITAL SANDER

A random orbital sander is a hand-held power tool which sands in a random-orbit action. That is, in
constant irregular overlapping circles.

A random-orbit sander can sand the socks off your old vibrating sander when you've got to strip paint
off furniture, prepare new molding, or clean up between finish coats. It can also smooth and clean metal
and composite materials such as solid-surface countertops.

JIGSAW

A jigsaw is a sharp power tool that's used for cutting curvy lines in wood or other materials. While most
saws can only cut in a straight line, a jigsaw makes it easier to cut complicated patterns and shapes.

Jigsaws are best used for cutting shapes and curves in wood with its narrow blade, which is attached to
the tool's body by a spring-loaded clamp at the front. The blade's sharp teeth are measured in TPI, or
teeth per inch. A higher TPI gives a smoother cut that requires less sanding.

SAWDUST VACUUM
With constant cutting and sanding in the workshop, a lot of dust and wood shavings are bound to cover
the place. Many power tools and bench tools have special bags or compartments to collect sawdust,
though these models tend to be pricier.

A more affordable solution is to purchase a sawdust vacuum. You may be wondering what separates a
sawdust vacuum from an ordinary vacuum, and it’s the fact that regular vacuums will quickly get clogged
and break down. Sawdust vacuums have special filters to prevent dust from entering fans and the
engine compartment.

A Vacuum is High-Pressure, Low-Volume and a Dust Collector is a Low-Pressure, High Volume. Vacuums
are used mainly for precision cleaning and material conveyance, and dust collectors for full scale facility
or process filtration. The basic system consists of a capture hood, an air mover, duct-work, and intake
and exhaust ducting.

NAILER

A nail gun is a power tool that drives fasteners such as brads or nails into wood or other soft materials. A
nail gun fires individual fasteners one at a time from a connected strip located in the tool's magazine.

A nail gun, nailgun or nailer is a form of hammer used to drive nails into wood or other materials. It is
usually driven by compressed air, electromagnetism, highly flammable gases such as butane or propane,
or, for powder-actuated tools, a small explosive charge.
CARPENTRY SAFETY
EQUIPMENT

SAFETY GLASSES, GOGGLES AND FACE SHIELD

Glasses, goggles and face shields are primarily used for eye protection for the individuals wearing them
ensuring the eyes, nose, and mouth are protected from exposure to respiratory secretions.

In any case, no matter how experienced a carpenter is, it is not a good idea to work without eye
protection - especially when using power tools. A pair of safety glasses is a minimum requirement, while
goggles or a face shield will provide better protection. It is imperative that all these accessories be rated
as completely shatterproof.

Wearing safety eyewear in your home, workshop, garage, yard, or workplace can protect your eyes from
injury and damage. Your eye can sustain significant injury from airborne chemicals, dust, and debris, so
it's important to protect yourself from potential harm.

HEARING PROTECTOR

When working with power tools or on loud job sites, safety rated headphones are an essential
accessory. Despite their convenience and ease of use, in-ear plugs only provide partial ear protection.

Hearing personal protective equipment (PPE) or hearing protectors are the devices used to prevent
noise induced hearing loss.
RESPIRATOR

There's a good chance that you'll produce a lot of particulate matter in the air unless your workplace is
equipped with a powerful dust collection system. Short-term inhalation of sawdust may not cause any
problems, but long-term inhalation can cause serious respiratory problems. If possible, consider buying
a respirator or a safety-rated mask.

A respirator is a device designed to protect the wearer from inhaling hazardous atmospheres, including
fumes, vapours, gases and particulate matter such as dusts and airborne pathogens such as viruses.

HAIR TIES

Power tools can cause accidents if any dangling hairs get caught in motors, especially in people with long
hair. You can prevent this danger by keeping hair ties handy and making a cheap investment in your
workplace's safety.

A hair tie (also called a ponytail holder, hair band, hair elastic, wrap around, gogo, or bobble) is an item
used to fasten hair, particularly long hair, away from areas.
