Class Size: 25
Grade: 9-12
Unit/Theme: Table tennis intro

Equipment: 6 tables, 24 paddles, 12 table tennis balls
Focus of Lesson: block shot
Student Performance Objectives (SPO): (National #
; MA CF #
;
Task/Activity #
)
By the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

(P) Demonstrate the block shot by successfully returning the ball to your partner or the
other team 3 out of 5 times during the lesson. (National S1.H1.L2, MA CF 2.17. In all
three tasks)
(C) Identify why in table tennis you would use the block shot when asked by the teacher
at the end of the lesson by 100% of the students. (National S2.H1.L1 CF MA 2.17 in the
closure)
(A) The students will be able to work productively with the students at their table while
playing table tennis 100% of the time. (National #: S4.H3.L1 MACF #: 2.26 Activity:
Entire Lesson)
Teacher Performance Objectives During the lesson the teacher will:
I will demonstrate that I can increase my voice volume by making sure that all students
can hear directions 100% of the time.
I will identify any off task behavior quickly and be able to put the student back on task
90% of the time.
I will reinforce the respect issue with the equipment throughout the lesson so that they
will not break any of the equipment.

Special Considerations What are the safety concerns? What is unique about the
students in this class?
A safety concern would be that when the ball goes under a different table make sure
the person asks before they just go under the table to grab it they could be stepped on
or hit with a paddle that someone is swinging.

SEQUENCE OF LESSON

ORGANIZATION

Students will be changing and coming into

the gym when done.

T=Teacher
S= Students

Warm up: We will be doing the routine warm

up of a 2 minute jog, 10 jumping jacks on a 3
count, 10 push ups and 10 crunches. I will
then start them and ask for a student to lead
them in the jumping jacks, push ups and
crunches.

warm up

Transition: Students will all come and make

a half circle around me where I will be by the
Tables to explain the rules of table tennis and
how to do certain things.
Introduction: My name is Mr. McKay and
today we will be starting the table tennis unit.
How many people have played table tennis
before? Anticipated response: About half
the class.
Does anyone know the proper way to hold
the paddle? Anticipated response: No one
will speak up.
So does everyone know how to shake
someone's hand? Turn to someone next to
you and shake their hand. That is how you
are going to hold the paddle. You may have
seen different ways in movies of holding it but
for this class we are going to hold it like a
handshake. I will have all the students grab
the paddle from the table and make sure they
can all do it correctly.
Now can we place the paddles on the ground
and have your eyes on me.
Now we are going to start with a block shot
today. Does anyone know what and block
shot is and why we would use it? Anticipated
response: Yes it is when the paddle is kept

flat and hit back to the other side with no spin

and we use it as a shot that is hit hard back at
us or if we are just learning how to play.

T
S

Rules: We will respect the equipment, do not

jump or lean on the tables. We will respect
the ping pong balls, do not hit them into the
ground if one is on the ground just pick it up.
We will respect the paddles, do not chuck the
paddles across the table.

Safety: There is going to be two of you on

each side of the table so when the ball is
coming to you make sure you both arent
swinging to get to it. You can call it when its
coming to you.

Transition: Raise your hand again if you

have played before. I want that group to be
on tables together If possible. Each group of
partners will grab a ping pong ball from me.
Activity 1: Partner pass: For this activity we
will be on the sides of the table. One partner
on one side and the other partner is across
the table from them width wise of the table.
Each set of partners will have a ping pong
ball and two paddles. You will practice using
the block shot back and forth to your partner.
You want to see how many in a row you and
your partner can get.
Key points: Paddle is flat, nice easy swing to
keep the ball under control.
Demo: I will have two student volunteers
demonstrate how to do the activity before the
students move to the different tables.
Extend up: You can try backhanding the ball
if it goes to your backhand but still keeping
the paddle flat.
Extend down: Practice the shot and have

your partner catch the ball then they can try

the shot and you can catch it. This can be
used until the person gets comfortable with
the skill.
Accommodation: If there is a student who
did not change or is not wanting to participate
they can count how many times in a row the
group gets and then move on to another
group and see how many they get. I will ask
the student who they saw get the highest
amount of passes back and forth.
If there is an extra student they can be on the
end of the table and the group can pass in a
triangle.

Safety: If the ball rolls away from you make

sure when you go to get it that you are not
going to get hit by somebody at another
table.

21:30- 29
minutes

Transition: Students will all come to the far

table that i am closest to and will leave their
paddles at the table they were at and ping
pong balls.
Activity 2: Round the table: For this activity
we are still going to be doing the block shot
but we are going to add some movement to
the activity. There will be a line of two people
at each side of the table. One side will start
with the ball and will serve across the table
then will go jog to the other side and get in
line. The person who was served to then hits
the ball back and will go to the other side.
Now there is some strategy in this because
you dont want to hit the ball when someone
isnt there. When you move to the other side
we are always moving to your right.
Key points: Paddle is flat, nice easy swing to
keep the ball under control.
Demo: I will have the students at one of the

ends demonstrate the activity.

Extend up: The students can switch the
paddle to their non-dominant hand and try the
activity that way.
T
Extend down: If the students are not getting
there in time then just have them switch with
the partner that is on their own side.
Safety: Reinforce the fact that everyone must
go to the right so that no one runs into each
other.
Accommodation; There can be a line of 3
people if there is an extra person. If person
didnt change or doesnt participate can have
them remind people to go to the right once
they hit it and retrieve the ping pong balls if
they are flying all over the place.

Transition: I will have the students put the

paddles on the table and come gather around
me in a half circle.
Activity 3: Game play: Who knows what
some of the rules of table tennis are?
Anticipated response: Can only bounce
once on your side, play to 21.
Now some of the other rules, we are playing
doubles and the person on the right side
serves. You can switch it up after a point so
everyone serves. Your team serves for 5
points in a row. If the ball hits the net on a
serve and goes over it is a redo and called a
let. In our game we will only be using the
block shot.
Key points: Paddle is flat, nice easy swing to
keep the ball under control.
Demo: I will have a different table that has
not demonstrated yet to demonstrate how to
play the game once they are started i will
send the rest of the groups off to start their

own game.
Extend up: Have the students change to
their non dominant hand or change the teams
to make it a little harder.
T
Extend down: Focus on the key points and
dont worry about keeping score just worry
about hitting it back and forth with the
classmates at your table.
Accommodation: The person can rotate in
and when not playing they can keep score of
a game. Also allow them to pick a different
game to go into.

Transition: Students will put all the

equipment back where they got it and gather
around me for the closure.
Closure: I need someone to tell me what
shot we learned today and why we would use
it during game play.
Anticipated response: Block shot and for
beginners or when we have a hard ball hit
right at us.
I need someone to show me with their hand
the angle at which the paddle is when you
make contact with the ball.
Anticipated Response: Puts it straight up
and down.
Is everyone a little more comfortable with the
block shot now after all the reps we got
today?
Anticipated Response: Yes

Students go to locker rooms to change.
