7 Assessment
Candidates model and facilitate the effective use of diagnostic, formative, and
summative assessments to measure student learning and technology literacy,
including the use of digital assessment tools and resources. (PSC 2.7/ISTE 2g)
Artifact: Data Inventory
Reflection:
The Data Inventory was completed for ITEC 7305. The purpose of this assignment
was to look at all the data my school is currently collects and how we are analyzing
or using that data. I looked at a variety of resources from data, the different subject
area that data is collected in, who examines the data and when and why we collect
it.
After my investigation, I could tell it has become a data world. This year the county
has made a concerted effort to implement technology into data collecting. We are
supposed to use the data collect to analyze student progress through our class and
previous classes. We have primarily used data on our summative assessments
test the end-of-course test. However with so many curriculum changes the test are
not valid to look at year to year. We used the data to measure student learning
and to make sure we are teaching the correct standards.
This year we have charted a new course and have started diagnostic tests for
freshman in English and math. The idea is to identify students who need help in
these areas sooner. We can look at their scores and place them better in classes
they could receive extra help. One thing the county is trying to implement is
formative assessments on line. These tests are being used to help evaluate the
teacher and have data to support their evaluations. With all the testing taking
place with technology it is vital for the staff to have technology literacy. The
administration staff has arranged professional development time to assure the staff
is prepared for the increase in technology. As a leader in technology for my school I
have had to model and facilitate how this new technology is used in the
classroom.
After completing this course I now have a better understanding on how to use data
to analyze student learning. My concern is too much testing and analyzing. At
some point we have to teach the students and quit testing them every other week
to see if they are learning. I believe the one area I would change if I did this
assessment over is to change my focus from students to departments. It is hard to
turn off the teacher mode and I focused solely on what it was doing to the students.
I think data collecting has some merit if used properly. Involving the department
heads and teachers should have been where I started. What information would they
have liked to see collected and why?
Completing this assignment did impact faculty development. The inventory showed
how and what type of data was being collected. My school had some weaknesses
and I have addressed those weaknesses with the administration staff. Moving

forward, I believe we will learn to use data in a more resourceful way and students
will receive the benefit from it.
