Adolph Hitler wrote in his book Mein Kampf, that to control

the populace the government must control the news
and control the schools. He did that well. He abolished
Freedom to Protest and Freedom of the Press under the
guise of safeguarding Germany from the Communists. He
arrested any teacher who did not display his picture and
teach the perfect race ideology. These two actions led to
the rise of absolute control over German citizens.

Montana Tales & Trails: The Young are soon upon us

By Bruce Auchly, FWP
Fast approaching is that time
of the year when we are awash in
young.
Birds and mammals, large and
small, will be all around us. And
thats not even counting fish.
Which begs the question:
Whats a kind-hearted soul to do
when confronted with a baby (fill in
the blank)?
While its a bit early for the peak
of young animals to be born, some
have already hit the ground, or nest,
and that is prompting phone calls
about what to do when those cuteas-a-button youngsters are found.
Just a sidebar here, but I dont
ever remember anyone calling to say
they found a bunch of baby snakes
and they are so cute.
Already raptors, like bald
eagles and great horned owls, have
nestlings. So do Canada geese. For
large mammals, antelope young are
here as well as bears and by the first
week of June, both species of deer
and elk will join in the fun.

And then there are rabbits.

For weeks already, friends have
bemoaned the issue of the household
cat dragging in whats left of a baby
bunny. When it comes to rabbits, and
hares, many are born and many die.
Montana is home to seven
members of the family Leporidae:
pygmy rabbit, black-tailed and
white-tailed jackrabbits, snowshoe
hare, and Eastern, desert and
mountain cottontails. The most
common of the bunch, the ones
most people would see regularly,
are the white-tailed jackrabbits and
mountain cottontails.
And the bunnies most often
dragged in by Boots the cat are
mountain cottontails, even out on
the prairie. Eastern cottontails are
mostly just found in a few counties
on the eastern and southeastern
borders of the state.
Desert cottontails become
more numerous in areas of eastern
and southeastern Montana. But
the mountain cottontails territory
covers both sides of the Continental

Divide, from Idaho to the Dakotas

and Wyoming to Canada.
And brothers and sisters are
they ever fertile. Kerry Foresmans
book, Mammals of Montana, pegs
the gestation length of the mountain
cottontail at 28-30 days, they can
have four to five litters per year, and
average four to six young in a litter.
Thats not to say every female
produces 30 young a year (think
of that hospital bill). But from late
winter through summer, somewhere
theres a young cottontail born.
So back to our original question
of what to do when finding a young
animal. The answer is leave it alone,
which can be tough to do.
Look, only a fraction of
the cottontails born make it to
a reproducing adult. But thats
enough. Besides all those young
rabbits that do not survive feed the
rest of the food chain, whether its
snakes, badgers and coyotes on the
ground or raptors from the sky.
If a cottontail lives to two years
it deserves Social Security.
