Kinds of precipitation

and severe storms

Science
Indicator 1
Boston International School
Second Term 2016

Objective:
Differentiating each component that is part
of the water cycle to understand how they
might be affected by terrain and weather
conditions present on Earth.
Learning objective
Describe how drops of water move through
the processes of evaporation,
condensation, and precipitation to make an
ongoing cycle happen.

Biblical principle : Water is a gift

from God
Job 36:27-28
27He draws up the drops of water,
which distill as rain to the streams;
28 the clouds pour down their
moisture and abundant showers fall
on mankind.

Kinds of
precipitation
1 Rain

2Snow

3Sleet

4 Hail

VOCABULARY

1) Rain
- Made up of liquid
- Most common
kind of
precipitation.
- Falls if
temperature is

2) Snow
Made up of ice
crystals.
Caused when air
temperature is so
cold that the vapor
changes directly to
ice.

3) Sleet
- Made up of frozen
- Cause when rain
rain.
falls through a
layer of freezing
cold air.

4) Hail
-Round pieces of ice.
-Rain freezes.

Severe
Heat from the sun powers
storms

the water cycle. This same

energy causes severe
storms.

1. Thunderstorm: Storms
with lightning, strong
winds, and heavy rain.

2. Tornado: A fast- spinning

spiral of wind that stretches
from
the
clouds
of
a
thunderstorm to the ground.

Hurricanes: Large tropical

storms. They form over
warm water in the tropical
oceans.
3.

4. Blizzards: Severe storms that

can last for hours. They have
strong winds, blowing snow, and
very low air temperature.

Speaking Project (Project # 1) "The

Water Cycle"
Students will work in class.
They will meet in pairs to develop a model
of the water cycle. Then explain the process
in front of their peers.
Materials: cardboard straw, sticks, play
dough of different colors, markers, scissors
and cotton.
