The Merlin 2000 Gas safety device
 This device is specifically
designed to be used in a
commercial kitchen environment.
 This device meets the British
standard known as BS-6173.
 This standard was put in place by
the government in 2001 and was
revised again in 2009 with the
purpose to make the work place
safer for workers in commercial
kitchens.
 This British Standard is now a
compulsory requirement for all
those commercial kitchens which
either newly built or undergoing
major refurbishment

Gas Solenoid Valve
 This is used for the isolating the gas
supply. This device complies and is
certified with the European Standard
EN161
 The gas solenoid valve is connected to
the gas supply lines

Gas pressure sensor
 This gas sensor is attached directly to
the solenoid valve.
 Meaning that this gas sensor is not
exposed to any copper connections
which makes the sensor much less
vulnerable to being damaged.
 This reduces installation costs as no
copper brazing or brass connections are
required

Starting Merlin 2000 Gas Safety
Device
 A key is required to turn on the device.
 Once the key is turned, the system
comes on and goes into its initial test
mode.

Merlin 2000’s Initial Test Mode
 The gas solenoid valve opens up fills the pipeline with gas
and closes,
 then the Merlin 2000 monitors the pressure along the gas
pipeline for 30 seconds

Safety Checks in Initial Test
Mode
 If the gas pressure drops within the 30 second start up
period due to any appliance being open, or if there is a gas
leak in the pipeline, the gas solenoid valve will not be
allowed to open for the gas and the panel will show “test
fail”.
 Similarly the Merlin 2000 also checks the fans to see if they
are switched on and are working fine.
 if any of the fans are not working or stopped working, the
Marlin 2000 will detect this fault and will allow an additional
10 seconds to see if the fans become operational again. If
not then the device will shut off the gas and will show a fan
fault alert.

Safety Checks in Initial Test
Mode
 The reason of this 10 seconds delay is because sometimes
when a high powered appliance is turned on in the kitchen, it
causes the power supply to go down slightly for the fans for
couple of seconds.

 This 10 seconds delay is a measure put in place to avoid

unnecessary alarm in such situation.

TEST – OK  GAS ON
 So when Merlin 2000 finds the gas line to be sound and the
fans to be working fine, the gas solenoid valve is allowed to
open for the gas and panel will indicate “Gas on”

Real Time Monitoring
 The Gas pressure sensor, monitors the gas pressure
all the time. If the gas sensor, senses that the gas
pressure in the gas supply lines pipeline has dropped
under 12mb for more than 10 seconds, the gas
solenoid valve will be closed and the panel will indicate
the pressure is low in the pipeline.

Remote Gas Detectors
 S & S Northern also supply a full
range of remote gas detectors.
 This is a Carbon Monoxide
Detector, which is normally fitted
approximately 1 meter from
ground level.
 There is always a danger of an
increase of CO2 level in the
workplace. If the sensor head
detects the co2 level is exceeding
50ppm for over 4 minutes the
Merlin 2000 will trigger the alarm
and will close the gas valve.

Remote Gas Detectors
 Other types of detectors are also available,
1. Natural gas detectors, which are normally fitted
approximately 30cm from the ceiling
2. LPG detectors which are fitted at approximately 50cm
from ground height in order to detect any LPG build up.
 These devices will go into alarm if they detect gas
at a 10% of a low explosion level.

resettable by fixing any
gas leaks and allowing the
sensor head to clear and
by restarting the Merlin
panel.

Emergency Stop Button
 Merlin 2000 device has an Emergency Stops
 S & S Northern also supply remote gas
emergency stop panel.
 In an event of an emergency one have to
press remote gas emergency button firmly to
activate the emergency stop for an instant
gas shut down.
 This panel is not like the old design model
where there is a glass covering the panel and
one has to break the glass in order to press
the emergency button.
 This panel have to feature where one can just
firmly press the emergency button.
 These remote emergency panel can be
resettable with a special key.
