Instructions
 Work in alone or in a small group, no more than three.
 Read through the problems and choose one you would like to solve,
check with your teacher to see if they think it is suitable for your
group.
 Devise a plan to solve your problem and put the plan into action.
 Prepare a short oral presentation to explain to your class how you
solved your chosen problem. Your explanation must include
[1] Your original plan of how to solve the problem.
[2] A step by step guide of what you did to get your answer.
[3] Details of any changes to your original plan and why those
changes were made.
[4] A detailed explanation of all your working out.
 You may choose any medium to support your presentation (chart,
PowerPoint, Photostory, etc) however visual aids are strongly
recommended.
Our Chosen Problem
Our Plan..
Write your plan of how you will solve the problem here:

1. Calculate the volume of the steps and then calculate the mass of the
main area.
Please complete this plan. How is calculating the mass of the steps
going to help you to calculate the amount of water in the pool?
2. Measure the length, depth and the width of the pool.
3. Measure the length, depth and the width of the stairs.
4. Multiply the length, depth and the width of the pool.
5. Multiply the length, depth, and the width of the stair.
6. Subtract the volume of the stairs from the volume of the pool.
7. Convert the final measurement from cubic centimetres milliLitres.
Working out the answer…
First stair 9.9x457x38.6= 174637.98cm3

Second stair 36.8x19.9x457= 3346702.4cm3

Pool 697x457x60= 19111740cm3

All the stairs= 3521340.38cm3

Pool – All Steps. 19111740cm3 - 3521340.38cm3=15,590,399.62cm3

= 15,590399.62ml

15590399.62ml divide 1000 = 15590.39962L

In the pool!
Excellent work!
How did we work it out?
First stair 9.9x457x38.6= 174637.98cm3
Second stair 36.8x19.9x457= 3346702.4cm3
Pool 697x457x60= 19111740cm3
All the stairs=3521340.38cm3
19111740cm3 - 3521340.38cm3=15590399.62cm3/15590399.62ml
15590399.62ml divide 1000 = 15590.39962L

Expected Learning Outcomes RE FL EC T Comment

Accuracy

1. Did we choose the right tools? FL Yes, because we used a

ruler and a meter stick.
2. Did we record all measurements with units. RE Yes, we measured every
thing in centimetres.
3. Did we calculate accurately? RE Yes, we didn’t understand
volume at the start of this
thing but then we
understood cubic cm later.
Understanding

1. Did we convert the units when needed? RE Yes, Leon did it.
