B. Performance Standards
Is able to apply the concepts of time, perimeter, area, and volume to mathematical problema
and real-life situations
C. Learning Competencies

Finds the elapsed time in minutes and seconds.

II. LEARNING OBJECTIVES

1. Identify elapsed time in minutes and seconds.
2. Appreciate elapsed time in minutes and seconds.
3. Write examples of an elapsed time in minutes and seconds.

Materials

Pictures, Manila Paper, Projector.

I. PROCEDURES
A. Engagement
1. Introduction
Is there any absent/s in the class today?
If there is may I know the surnames of those.
How’s your day?
Let’s thank the Lord for his glory and for our safety every day.

2. Review
Yesterday, what was your lesson with ma'am vanil all about?

It's all about finding the missing number in an equation involving properties of operations.

Let's try to recall and solve this problem.

1.) 2+3+4 = __ +4+2 (COMMUTATIVE)

2.) (9+6)+__ = (1+__)+ 6 (ASSOCIATIVE)

1. Motivation
The students will watch a short song clip about elapsed time.
https://youtu.be/9IEveLDtFzk

Our lesson objective for today is to identify elapsed time in minutes and seconds.

2. Establishing purpose for the lesson

Alvin started doing his homework at 6:00 PM and finished at 6:35 PM. How many minutes did
he spend doing his homework?
Let us use the number line.

Alvin spent 35 minutes doing his homework.

Another example.
A. Exploration
1. Practicing new skills/presenting examples of the new lesson
1.1. Concept Development
Find the Elapsed time and complete the table below.

B. Explanation
1. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skills #1
Do you already know what is Elapsed time and how it works?
Do you already have an idea how to get elapsed time in minutes and second?
How about using number line, subtraction, and table to get the elapsed time?
The teacher will explain what is Elapsed time.

Elapsed time is the length of the time when an event happened from the start to the end.
To find the elapsed time, you can use the following:
1. Use a number line
Example: Anna started cooking breakfast at 7:00 am, she finished cooking beakfast at
7:35 am. How long did Anna take to finish cooking breakfast?

Count by 5 minutes.
Elapsed Time = 35 minutes

7:00 am 7:35 am

Started Ended
Therefor anna took 35 minutes to finish cooking.

2. Count the number of seconds or minutes from the time the event started to the time
the event ended.
Example: James started answering his assingment at 7:00 pm, he finished it at 7:35 pm.
How long did it take for james to finish his assigntment?

Time Started - 7:00 pm Minutes

7:05 pm 5
7:10 pm 10
7:20 pm 15 Elapsed Time = 35 minutes
7:25 pm 20
7:30 pm 30
Time Ended - 7:35 pm 35
3. Subtract the time when the event started from the time it ended.
Example: Melissa helped her mother clean their house at 8:30 am. They finished cleaning
at 9:25 am. How long did it take for melissa and her mother to finish cleaning?

9:25 am ----> think 9:25 as 9 hours and 25 minutes (the time ended)
- 8:30 am ----> think 8:30 as 8 hours and 30 minutes (the time started)

Rename 1 hour as 60 minutes

9 hours becomes 8:60
Then add 60 and 25 minutes
It will become 8:85
Then Subtract 8:30 from 8:85
8:60 +25
9:25
8:85
-8:30
-8:30
0: 55
Therefor it took 55 minutes for melissa and her mother to finish cleaning their house.

C. Elaboration
1. Discussing new concepts and practicing new skill #2
Group Activity
Group Activity Standard
1. Use soft voice
2. Cooperation
3. Teamwork
4. Finish the given activity

Now I’ll group you into 4 groups and each group will have a task.
Group 1
Directions: Using a number line, get the elapsed time of the problem.
1.) Cris is working as a part-time cleaner everyday. He starts at 10:00 in the morning and
ends at 10:45 am. How long did he take to finish cleaning ?

2.) The Tv commercial started at 8:30 and ended at 8:30 and 38 seconds. How long did
the commercial lasted?

3.) Steve started doing his wooden coin bank, project in EPP at 4:30 P.M. He finished it at
5:00 P.M. How long did it take steve to work on his project?

Group 2
Directions: Find the Elapsed Time and complete the table.

Time Started Time Ended Elapsed Time

4:00 AM 4:48 AM

2:05 AM 2:30 AM

01:06:16 AM 01:06:59 AM

Group 3
Directions: Determine the time and then find the elapsed time.

1.)
______________________ ________________________
TIME STARTED TIME ENDED

ELAPSED TIME: _________

2.)
______________________ ________________________
TIME STARTED TIME ENDED

ELAPSED TIME: _________

3.)
______________________ ________________________
TIME STARTED TIME ENDED

ELAPSED TIME: _________

Group 4
Directions: Find the elpased time shown on each number line.
2. Generalization
What does it mean when we say elapsed time?
So how methods do we have to get the elpased time?
What are those kinds?
What do you think its important to know the elapsed time?
That is how important elapsed time in our daily lives. We need to know and learn about
elapsed because everything we do in our daily lives has time involved. We can keep up
with the things that we do. We can be mindful of how we should finish a certain task.

D. Evaluation

Give/Draw 5 (five) examples of elapsed time.

IV. Additional Activities for application/Recommendation/Assignment

Give 5 situations that can be answered using the 3 (three) methods of getting the
elapsed time.
