On the 12th of April 2010, the Newspaper in Education competition was held in the school library. The
competition is held in conjunction with the arrival of the Riau Foreign Exchange Students 2011. The
students were divided into five groups, each made up of four participants and led by a facilitator.
The aim of this activity is to increase the knowledge base of students, broaden and stimulate their
thought process and help keep abreast with day to day issues and incidents. Furthermore, the students
are made aware of larger world and society and reading habits are developed. They also become
creative in ideas and become responsible citizens who are aware, literate and enlighten citizens thus
helping in solving and supporting national issues. It is also an opportunity to express and share in areas
of education and learning via quizzes, forums, questions and articles.
NIE, the acronym for Newspaper in Education, is the name of an educational partnership between the
newspaper industry and participating school systems. To our knowledge, NIE programs were first
introduced in the 1930s. Today, on every continent there are programs and activities for preschool
through college and beyond.
Despite a few minor setbacks, the event in general was a success. The students were cooperative and
enthusiastic, eager to do their best. Some groups even volunteered to stay back to better complete their
scrapbooks.
The happiness radiating from their faces after completing their NiE activities could be felt from miles
away.
