    The Guttenberg Fire Department responded to a structure fire at a residence on June 20, 2011. Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the garage and quickly extinguished the fire located inside. The fire was intentionally set by a family member using straw bales but got out of control, resulting in minor smoke damage to the structure.     For Immediate Release Tuesday June 21, 2011 On Monday June 20, 2011 at 09:46pm the Guttenberg Fire Department was dispatched to a possible structure fire at the Schmitt residence located at 510 Acre Street in Guttenberg. Upon arrival the department noticed smoke coming from the garage. The department set up and attacked the fire from an open door on the south side of the building. Once the fire was located it was extinguished by fire department personnel. The quick response of the firefighters and their initial attack limited damage to the structure to very minimal smoke damage. The fire department remained on scene until all possible fire sources where contained to the best of our ability. No emergency service personnel or civilians were injured during the call for service. After the initial investigation a family member informed law enforcement that he had intentionally set some straw bales on fire in the garage. When he realized the fire was out of control he tried to remove the bales and throw water on them. When this did not help he called 911. Because the fire was not maliciously set the fire has been ruled intentionally set, but no charges are being filed. The Guttenberg Fire Department was assisted by the Guttenberg Ambulance, Guttenberg Police Department, Clayton County Sheriffs Department, and Iowa State Patrol.
