FUTURE OF MANNED SPACEFLIGHT?

Originally designed as part of NASAs Constellation program that would have returned astronauts to the Moon, the Orion Multi-Purpose Crew Vehicle emerged from that programs cancellation with an updated mandate to carry astronauts beyond low-Earth orbit and into deep space.
ORION MULTI-PURPOSE CREW VEHICLE (MPCV) Crew module
With space for six astronauts, it is the only part of the MPCV that returns to Earth after each mission.

Launch abort system


In the event of an emergency, instantly separates the crew module from the launch vehicle using solid rocket-powered engines.

Bigger than Apollo


The Orion spaceship is basically an updated and oversized version of the Apollo program command and service module. Orion can carry up to six astronauts instead of three.
