Chemistry Nomenclature Vocab


Nomenclature: A naming system. Monatomic: Ions formed from a single atom. Diatomic: an Ion made of only two atoms. Charge: the power of an atom can be negative or positive. Ionic Bond: A bond formed with two oppositely charged ions. Compound: A substance made up of atoms of two or more different elements joined by chemical bonds. Acid: A chemical substance (typically, a corrosive or sour-tasting liquid) that neutralizes alkalis, dissolves some metals, and turns litmus red. Subscript: Symbols placed at the bottom right of an element. Superscript: A character set, printed, or written above and immediately to one side of another: In x2 the superscript is 2. Stock: a concentrated solution that will be diluted to some lower concentrate for actual use. Naming: Nomenclature Traditional/classical: Nomenclature Molecular/Covalent: A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons. Cation: an ion that has a positive charge Anion: an ion that has a negative charge. Polyatomic: an Ion made of two or more atoms. Oxidation: A reaction that removes one or more electrons from a substance such that the substances valence or oxidation state increases. Chemical: any substance that has a defined composition. Formula: A set of chemical symbols showing the elements present in a compound and their relative proportions. -Ous= Full of -Ide= Indicating an organic compound -ite= a member of a part of the body Ic= having some characteristics of Ate= indicates salt of an acid
