Leadership of Kyai in Actuating Educational Institution of Islamic Boarding School Salafiyah Syafiiyah Sukorejo Situbondo. Thesis. Keywords : Leadership of Kyai, Actuating, Institution of Islamic Boarding School Kyai as a leader on Islamic Boarding School should have the ability, capability for lead the institution to be the best institution. Leadership of kyai is very important to develop the institution of Islamic Boarding School because kyai has a full authority and final decision maker. In educational management, actuating is determine how the planning process has be done and how the organizing can be functioned well. The study has be done on Islamic Boarding School of Salafiyah Syafiiyah Sukorejo Situbondo. It is aimed to describe: 1) how the leadership of kyai to actuate the education of Islamic boarding school institution 2) how is kyai as a leader develop the people, select the personnel and make the decision to reach the institution goals in Islamic Boarding School, 3) how is kyai motivate the leaders, staff, and teacher on Islamic Boarding School, 4) how is kyai coordinate and communicate to his subordinate at institution of Islamic Boarding School, and 5) how is kyai command to his subordinate doing the task each other. The design used in this study is qualitative research with single case study. The data collections are gathered from three sources. They are the inquirer himself, informants consist for about 20 informants from Islamic Boarding School. The data have collected by depth interview, observation participation, and documentation. Data analysis had done during data collection and after data collected, it used interactive data analysis whose consists of: data collection, data reduction, data display and conclusion. Researcher has used three types of data validity techniques: prolonged engagement, triangulation and review informant. The result of this study shows that the Islamic Boarding School Sukorejo is not the traditional or classic Islamic Boarding School as its name, but it collaborate between the traditional and modern system. Kyai develop the people by giving scholarship full or by sponsorship to increase their jobs at institutions. Kyai also select the personnel on institution of Islamic Boarding School by using experience and their long service. Decision making is done by mechanism that is ruled in Islamic Boarding School Constitutions. Motivation is gift by kyai when it is meeting with the Islamic Boarding School Board either in once month meeting nor a period of three months meeting. Kyai coordinate with government institution, society, which is mentioned by external meeting, and internal meeting is implemented also by the Islamic Boarding School Board. Kyai communicate with his subordinate both direct or indirect communication. And the last, Kyai command to his subordinate by using unity of command. Based on the findings, it is suggested as follow: (1) the Central Department of Education is expected to give more supports either in the form of block grand, facilities, and supplies, human resources, or policies so that the

Islamic Boarding School can be successful; (2) Education Service of Situbondo Municipality: as a policy maker and being responsible in education is expected to make policies endorsing the Islamic Boarding School; (3) the Islamic Boarding School Board and Institutions Leaders should be existed the religious and spiritual values to make success their institutions; (4) Kyai as a key factor in Islamic Boarding School activities should give more chance to his subordinate developing their skill and abilities in developing the institutions; (5) other researcher: if the current study is emphasized on the leadership and management functions, the subsequent researchers are suggested to conduct a study on management functions especially, planning, organizing, and controlling.
