Bede School
May 30, 2013 Dear Parents and Guardians: Summertime and Social Media. When school lets out in June, thoughts turn to summer activities and relief from the more regimented school schedule. But structures and learning continue to be important. When students are in school, they are occupied constructively and opportunities for electronic socializing are limited. When school is out, there are more opportunities for both in-person socializing and the electronic type. There is a lot that can be said for or against social media, but for this last letter of the 2012-2013 school year I would like to make just three points: 1. The jury is still out on whether extensive social media interaction negatively impacts a childs ability to grow in interpersonal skills. There is some thinking that children who spend inordinate amounts of time on line may be using that medium as a substitute for personal interaction or in place of person-to-person relationship building. (Here I include all devices, especially hand-held devices.) At the very least, the recommendation is to create opportunities for children to interact personally through a variety of face-to-face activities in the family, neighborhood, community, and church. Separately, but related, is recent research that indicates students distracted by social media tend to perform lower than those whose focus on school work done at home without social media available. In one controlled study, students studying with their cell phones turned on performed 20% lower on standardized tests. (Rosen. Rewired: The Psychology of Technology). 2. Its natural for children to form groups of friends either spontaneously or through team or group activities. With social media, group and leadership formation accelerates. Inside those groups, the members jostle for leadership, and that leadership may shift from person to person depending on the activity, time, place, etc. But while its natural for patterns of leadership to form, its not desirable for one member of that group to dominate in every aspect of the interaction. When leadership becomes domination, we have one of the scenarios of bullying beginning to form. Social groups shouldnt become exclusive. And electronic communication shouldnt become secretive among members of a group as a way of enforcing exclusivity. As much as possible, group activity, including electronic activity, should be subject to the fresh air rule. The more transparent, the better. 3. Hate the sin and not the sinner (Pope John XXIII). One of the problems we have in rooting out bullying behavior is in separating the child from the negative behavior. When we hear someone is being bullied, we conjure up an image of a monster, perhaps a wolf in sheeps clothing. Were told that in a bullying situation, there is an offender, a target, and an observer. We have a mission to help all three. As in the handbook, bullying behavior (defined in multiple ways) must have consequences, but that child also needs constructive redirection. The

target also needs help in building strong relationships and self-respect, and the observer needs help in saying stop in one way or another. Bullying behavior also tends to be secretive, especially in supervised arenas. Social media lends itself to that secrecy especially when were talking about hand-held devices. Parents can meet their responsibility of supervision of a childs account, but there is still a need for an honest, talking relationship. Its possible, for example, for the parents of student A to carefully monitor their childs account. But that student may have a secondary account on another phone, tablet or computer. There are many benefits to our citizenship in the digital world, but there are also negatives that we all have to be on guard against to protect children - sometimes even protect them even from themselves. A final note: It is with sadness that I announce that Catherine Amrich, our first grade teacher, has accepted another job for next year. She is taking a break from teaching to do something else and pursue graduate school. She has done an outstanding job in first grade this year and preschool for two years before that. Join with us in wishing her the best for the future. We know shell be a success in all her future endeavors. My next official communication will be a Back-to-School letter in early August. Best Wishes, Charles Pinto, Principal

Change in location for the School Picnic (Friday, May 31): Due to the uncertainty of
the weather (threat of thunderstorms), and also because the venue has been reported to be soaked from previous rain, we are changing the picnic to school grounds and building. Children should be dressed for both indoor and outdoor activity. The Parent Association has arranged for fun and games and a picnic lunch. (Parents who volunteered to help in the park are still needed to help on school grounds) Because it is not a regular school day, parent permission slips will still be needed.

ELECTRONIC WASTE! Electronic waste or e-waste is a HUGE money maker! Going forward, this is going to be the cash recycling program that St. Bede is going to rally behind to earn our fundraising dollars. If our community gets behind the e-waste program as it did for TerraCycle and Recycle Rally, St. Bede can easily earn $500 a WEEK or more! If you have enjoyed the numerous improvements St. Bede recycling fundraising has been able to make to our school, please start saving your own toner and ink jet cartridges as well as old cell phones and laptop computers. Our program take ANY brand and ANY size of e-waste working or not! Collection goes beyond your own homes. Several business donate their e-waste to St. Bede and with some simple networking by ALL of us we can collect even more. Ask your friends, family members, employers, neighbors and any business you have a familiar relationship with to also collect their e-waste for us. Networking did work in a gigantic way with Recycle Rally and if we all start networking now for ewaste, the CASH will come flooding through our doors.
