Section A [25 marks] [Time suggested : 40 minutes] Terengganu Trial Paper 2010

A Memorable Holiday It was two weeks of a midyear break. I thought longingly on how to spend my holiday because when the school resumed, it would be back to the grindstone for me. Out of the blue, the phone rang. It was my uncle calling from Terengganu. When he offered me to spend time for a few days there, I immediately jumped at the chance. Even after knowing him for all my life, never once have I stepped my foot in his place. I decided to go on the next day for there was so much of preparation to be done. I waved goodbye to my parents as my bus was departing. At first, I was far too excited to sleep but it seemed like a bluff after all when I slept all the way till I reached my destination. The clock showed me that it was seven oclock in the morning when I woke up. As I got up, there he was my uncle standing there waiting to fetch me up with his Proton Saga. As the car drove, I could smell the fresh air. I enjoyed the tranquil scenery of the village. It was a total contrary with the hustle and bustle of my home, in a busy city. The simplicity of the village itself enthralled me. Upon seeing the house near the sea only then I realised that my uncle lived in a fishing village. My arrival was awaited by my fellow cousins at the door. I received a bear-like hugs from them. It was an exhausting journey but I was too ecstatic and overzealous just to stay home for the rest of the day. So, that evening, to my pleasant surprise, my cousins invited me for a picnic at the beach. It took me only five minutes before I was up and ready for it. We had sandwiches as an appetizer, fried noodles for the main course and tropical fruits for the dessert. There seemed to be abundant source of coconuts so we drank the coconut juice. While eating, I enjoyed the picturesque scenery. We finished our meal in no time and soon everybody was taking a stroll at the beach. The colourful shells tempted me into collecting them. There were far more varieties of the shells than I thought there would be. After watching the sunset, we finally went home. The sunset was as lovely as a picture. Back in the house we were having a feast. My aunty, who is a talented cook grilled us a swordfish with ginger and spring onion. I ate to my hearts content because that was a rare opportunity. My uncle told me to sleep early that night. It seemed that he was going to surprise me. I was dozing off soundly like a baby when someone woke me up. I was wondering because the time showed that it was only 1 oclock in the morning. My uncle told me that we were going fishing. I followed him to the beach and helped him to get the boat from the shore. He also taught me how to use the fishing net. In order to attract the fish, he instructed

me to shine the torchlight to the water. By the time it was dawn, we had already caught enough fish. At the shore, I watched the fishermen unloaded their catch. Assisted by my cousins and uncle, I carried the fish to the market to be sold. The market was noisy with the shouting. Then I went back to the house to rest after a long night at the sea. It was ten oclock in the morning when I woke up. After changing into some descent clothes, I went to the kitchen to offer some help. My aunt was doing something that I was not familiar of. She was drying fish. She taught me how to clean the fish properly. Later she showed me the way to dry the fish. This was something that I would never have the chance to do at home. I was so glad that I was able to spend a few days there. After a week, I learnt a lot about the life in a fishing village. What a memorable holiday it was!
