Put the focus on YOU in 2014!

Welcome to the start of a new year that I hope is full of health, happiness and prosperity for each of you. While it would be nice if my wish could make it so, the fact is that we truly need to put in the effort to get ourselves to this idyllic place in life. Our increasingly busy lives make it easy for us to let ourselves fall further and further down our priority lists. Why do we let this happen when taking care of ourselves is essential to our health and well-being? Considering its the season of resolutions, this is the perfect time to put more focus on yourself! If youve already made efforts in this area, keep them going. If youve not yet been able to devote the resources to yourself, start with small steps so you can avoid being overwhelmed by the commitment. Remember, you have a lifetime ahead to ramp up your efforts! Start with the basics: Make healthy nutritional choices. Get regular exercise. Think positively. Ensure adequate sleep (quality and quantity). Not too overwhelming, right? So, why not let 2014 be the year of YOU? Youre worth it! This months issue is once again full of thoughtful articles that are meant to open our minds to all of the services, products and resources available to us as we do our best to live healthy lives. Don Neviaser shares some tips on how to improve other peoples perceptions of you by improving your feelings about yourself. And

speaking of perception, Brittany Miller explains how eating certain foods can actually improve your appearance. Laura Ash discusses traditional holistic practices of a nomadic people in Africa and the importance of preserving such traditions, wherever you are. And, of course, there are many more, so enjoy! Best wishes to all of you as you begin this new year with a renewed commitment to healthy living! In health and happiness,

Vibrational issues
By Rebecca Grazulis, M.A., M.Ed.

ou may have heard those in the lightwork community throw out the following statement: Everything is energy. Just a new-agey thing to say? No. Everything is energy. But you already knew that. Im energy. Youre energy. And perhaps more importantly, our apparent separateness, and the division of our energy is just an illusion. Have you ever walked into a room and your energy immediately felt like it went up or down? Well, that room, the people in it, and really, everything, has an energetic charge. We can guard our energy and take measures to protect ourselves from negative situations and people, but we also have to be real: the worlds energy affects us. And insofar as that goes, let me add this: you must be responsible for your own energy. Its true that some people (empaths, Im talking to you) are more sensitive to energy than others. There are lots of reasons for that, and there are definitely measures that these people can take to help themselves in energetically challenging times. However, what is more important for people to learn as a whole is that you are responsible for the energy you bring into a relationship, a room and the world at large. Im not suggesting that you are never allowed to have a bad day. We all have days when the world gets the best of us. And some of us are definitely dealt a more difficult hand than others.

helping women live magically

I cant really speak to the fairness of all of this; I dont have the inside universal scoop on why things are the way they are. However, I do think that we can all agree (if a little reluctantly) that we are 100 percent responsible for how we show up in the world. That doesnt mean that we beat ourselves up when were feeling low. That doesnt mean that we hide in our houses when we dont feel super positive. That just means that we have to try our very best to work with the hand were dealt. Our reactions to that hand will impact the energy of everyone we meet, the situations we draw to us, and, in general, the energy of the world. When weve gone through a difficult period, or, perhaps, when we have very difficult circumstances to deal with on a daily basis, its very easy to develop contrary notions. We allow ourselves to believe that we have the right to be difficult, to wallow in our sadness or to take the easy way out. Ah, well, maybe. It is our right to behave as we wish. But realize that, even if you dont want to take the high road for the sake of those around you, own the fact that your reactions determine your future. And your future determines the futures of everyone else in big and small ways. When you own your energy, you admit that you are important. You also assume the role of the main character of your story; you take back the title of hero or heroine. Do heroes always win? Not always or, at least, not in obvious ways. But when a person decides to do the best he can with his own energy, the planet wins. Dont dismiss the reality of your own energy because you cant always see its effects. It always makes a difference. Always.

Understanding photovoltaic systems

By Mark Warnick

photovoltaic (solar electric) system is one that converts energy from the sun into the electricity used in our homes. The main components of these systems are the photovoltaic modules (panels), an inverter, and, rarely, batteries. How do photovoltaic systems work? The photovoltaic modules convert the suns energy into electricity in the form of DC, or direct current, electricity. The vast majority of modules that are currently being installed in Wisconsin consist of solar electric cells made from refined silicon. Silicon is the second most abundant element in the earths crust, after oxygen! The cells are sealed between glass and a weather-tight backing sheet, and then framed with aluminum for supporting the assembly and for mounting. Modules are rated in watts. This rating shows how much electricity the module will produce when there is a specific amount of solar energy hitting the panel at a specific temperature. The actual production will vary throughout the day and at different times of the year. The size of a whole system is usually specified in kilowatts (kW, 1 kW = 1,000 watts). A 3.5 kW system may consist of fourteen 250-watt panels. Kilowatt-hours (kWh) are the unit of electrical energy for which we are billed. When calculating energy production from photovoltaic systems, a good rule of thumb for a lowshade location is that for each kilowatt of a module, the system will produce 1,250 kWh of electricity per year. So a 3.5 kW system in a good, shade-free location will produce about 4,375 kWh annually. The modules are connected to one or more inverters. The inverter converts DC electricity into AC electricity, which will run appliances in your home. Almost all systems installed in southern Wisconsin are grid-tie systems. The energy produced by this type of system is either used in the home or sent out onto the electric grid for your neighbors to use. Most utilities are required to pay you the same rate for the excess energy that flows onto the grid as you are paying them. This is called net-metering, and shows up as a credit on your bill. Your home will draw power from the grid when the appliances in your home require more energy than the system can produce, on cloudy days or at night, for example, utilizing your credit. The value of this electricity will be important if you are looking at the system from a financial perspective. What happens when the power goes out? The inverters for the grid-tie systems are required to disconnect from the grid when the

power goes out. This feature, know as anti-islanding, is to ensure that the inverter is not sending energy onto the grid and endangering someone attempting to restore power in your area. Once the power is restored, the system will turn on assuming the sun is out! If you want to keep your electricity flowing, even if the power on the grid goes down, you will need a place to store energy from the photovoltaic system. This is where batteries come into play. On these specialized batteries, a different type of inverter is installed that disconnects from the grid but still supplies some power to

Heartworm prevention for pets and people!

By Lori Scarlett, DVM

aise your hand: how many people know about heartworm disease in dogs? Ok, looks like most of you dog owners do. How many know that heartworms can infect cats? Several of you. But how about in people? Not too many hands left up! For those that arent familiar with the disease, heartworms are spread by mosquitoes. Mosquitoes become infected with microfilaria (basically baby heartworms) while sucking blood from an infected animal. During the next 10 to 14 days, the microfilaria mature to the infective larval stage within the mosquito. After that, the mosquito bites a susceptible animal, and the larvae enter through the bite wound. It then takes two to three months for the larvae to mature into adult worms, which is when they can be detected by a blood test. It used to be that most veterinarians in Wisconsin recommended only giving a heartworm preventative seasonally, when mosquitoes were most likely to be out generally May through December. Heartworm preventative reaches back, so if you gave your pet a dose on May 1, it would take care of any heartworm larvae that might have been in the blood from April 1. But most vets currently recommend giving dogs and cats heartworm preventative year-round. Most mosquitoes live about 2 months when the temperature is around 77 F, but can live longer when the temperature is cooler. When it gets below 50 F, mosquitoes dont bite. In the fall, our houses look pretty inviting to mosquitoes, and they can live several months in our warm kitchens. And what happens when we have those few warm days in January or February? Anytime a mosquito bites, there is the chance that your pet will be infected with heartworms. According to parasitologist Dwight Bowman, the chance of a dog being infected with heartworm disease each year is one in 200. That is about the same as your chance of being diagnosed with cancer this year. Heartworm disease is almost 100 percent preventable with medication; would you take medication once a month to prevent being diagnosed with cancer this year? Of big concern to vets and pet owners is that some heartworms in the Mississippi Delta region are showing resistance to monthly
Natures Pathways | January 2014

preventatives. This means that if a dog tests positive for heartworms, it should be treated immediately and aggressively to kill all the worms. Susan Little, DVM, PhD from the Companion Animal Parasite Council says, Preventatives are still the best protection we have, and consistently administering them is key. In addition, yearly blood testing is very important to catch infection early, before the dog has suffered any damage to the heart or lungs. Preventive medications are very effective, but it is easy to miss giving a dose on time, or to fail to notice when a pet doesnt swallow a pill. Year-round administering of preventative can also be helpful for intestinal worm control. Most heartworm preventatives treat roundworms and hookworms. These are common parasites in dogs and cats and can infect humans (particularly children), too. Some preventatives also treat whipworms and tapeworms. By giving preventative year-round, your pet has good protection when it goes to a place frequented by other animals. Hookworms can also be spread through infected cockroaches, so your cat or dog doesnt even need to leave your house to pick up worms. Dont forget your cat! Cats also get heartworms. In the US, 27 percent of cats infected with heartworms are indoor-only cats. There is no good treatment for heartworm disease in cats, and up to 20 percent of infected cats with adult heartworms die. So monthly preventative is the best way to go. People can also be infected with heartworms another reason to keep all dogs and cats on preventative. The larvae can migrate to the lungs, where they die and cause scar tissue to form. This scar tissue looks like a white spot on x-ray, which can be confused with lung cancer. So talk with your veterinarian about keeping your dog and cat on heartworm preventative year-round. Your pet will thank you for it!

your home. I say some because most homes consume so much energy that the battery bank required to power the whole home would be so large that it would need to be housed in a small room (and also come with a tremendous sticker shock). The battery bank for a backup system is sized to power a minimum number of appliances for the number of days you wish to have power, should grid power stay down. In southern Wisconsin, the power has been very reliable, and outages of more than a few hours are rare. Thus, almost all systems in Wisconsin are grid-tied without batteries. No more electric bills?! Most people would enjoy not having to pay this utility, so they would like a photovoltaic system that offsets 100 percent of their power. The size of the system that is best for you depends on several factors. Available space for the system may prevent the size of system required to offset 100 percent of your electric use. If this is the case, however, there is no reason you cant install a smaller system to offset a portion of your electricity usage. Systems can also be sized to fit customers budgets. An experienced solar energy contractor can help you determine the best photovoltaic system for you.

by a campfire, sometimes told only once. Its a beautiful thing to witness, but a terrible thing to lose. With modern technology, Western education and Western culture, these oral traditions are being lost very quickly. This may be the last generation of most of these indigenous peoples living history, and once it is lost, it will be lost forever. What do we have to offer in preserving a living history? What do we need to preserve? While pondering how to sustain our health sovereignty, I started the Herbal Anthropology Project, an international NGO which documents the use of herbal medicine in an effort to preserve the use of traditional medicine in indigenous cultures. Our first project has been with the Maasai of the Ngorongoro highlands of northern Tanzania. The Maasai are nomadic pastoralists. They have been raising cattle for the last 500 years in southern Kenya and northern Tanzania. Traditionally, they move every few years to maintain the land for fodder and nourishment for their cattle and boma (villages). Deforestation, overgrazing and the encroachment of modern civilization, however, are bringing these practices to a halt. Some Maasai are building modern houses as they can no longer remain nomadic. This is due to the fact that they now live in conservation areas, much like Native American reservations. The Maasai are known for being warriors. With their ability to track most dangerous animals and make sounds to ward off night hunters, they are revered throughout the region and beyond. What keeps them sustained is not just their way to make a living, but how they live. Maasai go on traditional retreats where they consume 10 goats and one cow for 11 men and boys in 19 days. They will eat three to four kilos of meat per day, per person, by boiling the raw meat with roots from various Acacia trees that surround their village. Acacia roots are extremely bitter and pungent herbs. The Maasai also drink one to two liters of this decoction per day. The recipe

The doctor/ patient encounter

By Jed Downs, MD, MPH

recent sermon I listened to focused on the ideal of being present in human relationships and experiences. This focus has other names, a common one being mindfulness. There are many goals, implicit and explicit, in a medical encounter, depending on the perspective of the party involved. From the patients perspective, they might include regaining or perpetuating health; understanding their injury or disease; recognition of and empathy for what they are experiencing; and how their health problem impacts their life and the lives of family, friends, employers and the other people that make up their interconnected social web. From the perspective of the healthcare executive, there are many goals, a lot of them mutually incompatible. Yes, there is concern about population health and outcomes, and there are concerns regarding the patient experience. Are the staff friendly, on time, and respectful enough for the patient to want to return? But also looming large are economic issues. What percentage of the target patient population can be drawn in? For the physician, there are multiple potential goals and it becomes difficult to generalize. For most, the wellbeing of their patients plays a role. But there are competing forces active in their lives. Can they meet the production goals set by their employer? Can they get off work in time to meet family or satisfy other social commitments? Is there another patient who is sicker or more critical that they cannot stop musing about? Are they worried about pending legal action against them? The distracted provider of healthcare who is pressed for time will have difficulty meeting the educational and emotional needs of the patient. In order to optimize effectiveness, the provider needs to be present with the patient during the history, present during the examination and, in the case of the osteopathic or other manual provider, present during treatment. When this occurs, the needs of the patient can be met. The provider then appreciates the interplay between accumulated injuries and existing illness, and how emotional states may interact with physical states. They can then do their best to assist the patient in achieving his or her highest level of health and function.

In osteopathy, in order for a practitioner to be present for the patient, they need to leave their ego outside the door. It is not about the provider being a hero and coming to the rescue. They are the servant and teacher assisting the patients body in overcoming the tissue barriers and adaptations which have built up over time in response to injury and inflammation. The practitioner needs to generate hypotheses

Whats the harm in sugar?

e all know that drinking calories can cause weight gain, but are you aware of the other effects your beverages can have on your overall health, including your smile? Cavities are created when sugar combines with the bacteria in your mouth to form acid (diet/sugar-free drinks contain their own acid). The acid attacks your teeth, an effect which lasts about 20

minutes and reoccurs every time you sip your beverage. These acid attacks weaken your tooth enamel, allowing bacteria in your mouth to cause cavities.

(neutral); battery acid is a 1.0. CocaCola is 2.4 and Gatorade is 2.9. Soda contains zero nutrients, and is high in calories and sugar. Studies show a strong link between soda consumption and obesity. Soda suppresses the appetite so you are less likely to eat nourishing foods. Soda drinkers are less likely to get the recommended levels of vitamin A, calcium, and magnesium. Phosphorus, a common ingredient in soda, can deplete bones of calcium. Girls who drink more soda are more prone to broken bones. Caffeine is known to create physical dependence and upsets the normal balance of neurochemistry in the developing brains of children. Drinking a lot of soda every day can lead to blood sugar disorders, including diabetes. Aspartame, used in diet sodas, is a potent brain toxin and endocrine disrupter. Citric acid, often found in soda, may contain traces of MSG. MSG is another potent brain toxin. The artificial flavors found in soda may also contain traces of MSG.

for this meat soup has never been written down, and one would think it would never have to be. But the Maasai have cell phones and the Internet, modern houses and hiking boots. They write in English and Swahili, but their native tongue, Maa, is a living oral language. The Maasai of the Ngorongoro highlands have asked The Herbal Anthropology Project to partner with them to document their traditional medicines and foods before they are lost forever. We have been blessed to be part of their rituals, safaris and village meetings. But we dont have to go to East Africa to find a culture of health being lost. In Wisconsin, there are medicinal plants that are being poached and taken from peoples private lands, our conservation areas and public lands. One herb that sits in our own backyard is American ginseng (Panax quinquefolius). There has been much hype around this plant lately as it is in high demand in foreign markets. Online auctions can sell wild American ginseng for as much as $600 per pound.w Unfortunately, American ginseng is now threatened to become an endangered species.2 Partnering with the Aldo Leopold Nature Center, which protects native prairie, woodland and wetland habitats that are home to a variety of native medicinal plants, The Herbal Anthropology Project will be cultivating at-risk, medicinal plants in their new childrens garden and greenhouse. The Nature Center hosts outdoor educational programs and nature-themed events for school groups, children and adults, and will use the native plantings as part of their lessons on indigenous plants, pioneering and gardening. With this partnership, we will do our small part to keep alive the story of these plants healing ways.

But unlike your heart or lungs, we often neglect to consider what a critical part the liver plays in the function of our bodies. The liver processes, packages and ships lipids (otherwise known as cholesterol); helps to regulate blood sugar through the production of glycogen and glucose; and produces proteins that are critical to the function of our body. But this list is not inclusive, as the liver also stores iron reserves as ferritin; produces proteins needed for blood-clotting and bile for the digestive process; and metabolizes almost all the foods and substances that we take into our body! anatomy-wise, serves for the storage of bile, ejecting it when needed with the consumption of food. tion can occur under conditions such as iron or copper overload, infectious hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer. Fortunately, many of us will not experience these disease conditions. However, the liver also can experience inflammation and fatty degeneration associated with the excess weight we carry on our bodies; the overuse and abuse of alcohol; and gastrointestinal dysfunction due to Celiac disease or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth. Collectively, these are far more common conditions and are also often associated with abnormal liver-function tests. The most common gallbladder dysfunction, which unfortunately many are familiar with, is the production of gallstones. Gallstones are usually a cholesterol-type of stone, and thicker, more sludge-like bile often leads to this.
ADIPOSITY AND LIVER/GALLBLADDER DISEASE: Adipose tissue is the fat-storing connective tissue of our body. Our adipose tissue functions not just as an energy reserve, but also as an endocrine organ and storage receptacle for toxins known as persistent organic pollutants (POPs). Where better to put these dangerous compounds than a place where they can be safely stored away from our essential organs? However, with weight loss, these toxins are released, and require the liver to increase its activities to metabolize and eliminate them from our bodies. As if there werent already enough work for the liver to do! The release of organochlorine compounds (a type of POP) also further complicates weight-loss by affecting the levels of your active thyroid hormone in the body, leading to a reduction in resting metabolic rate. Obesity and rapid weight loss are also risk factors for the formation of gallstones. Higher levels of hormones associated with oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy further increase these risks. PROTECTING THE LIVER AND GALLBLADDER: Foods that are high in antioxidants such as fruits and vegetables are a good place to start in supporting liver and gallbladder function. Beets are one such food, as the betalains and polyphenols in beets act as antioxidants, and have been shown specifically to improve liver function. Turmeric, often found in warming winter curries, is a great spice to use, as this spice has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, and also improves the liver elimination of toxic substances. Beets and turmeric both contain vitamin C, an antioxidant with liver-protective effects, which also helps prevent gallstone formation. Increasing exercise and avoiding a sedentary lifestyle reduces the risk of gallstone formation, and helps your body to eliminate toxins via sweating. So whether or not weight-loss was a New Years resolution, the importance of supporting the liver (and gallbladder) should be a part of your ongoing new years health plan!

Humility, not hubris, optimizes outcomes. Not many providers who pursue being present deliver consistently. Mindfulness might not be the perfect synonym for the type of being present I am trying to communicate. For many, it will have a Buddhist overtone of observation, which is often a free-flowing, internal process. Mindfulness is not directive; it is observational and insightful. For a practitioner to meet a patients needs, the patient must be the object of attention and concentration. The provider observes and collects data and then responsibly applies their expertise for the benefit of the patient. The provider is problem- and goalfocused, seeking clinical solutions and recommendations for patient involvement in recovery. When the practitioner has two-way communication with the patient, a therapeutic bond is formed, and patients can be partners in their own recovery.

ts the time of the year when we all dig deep, buckle down and change our eating habits. If you want to see and feel a difference in your body, try giving up sugar, grains, legumes and dairy for 30 to 60 days. Get food prepared with fruits, vegetables, proteins and fats so that you are successful. The American Heart Association recommends we have no more than 10 teaspoons of sugar a day; however, the average American gets three to four times that each day. Im not saying grains,

legumes and dairy dont belong in our diets, but we dont necessarily need them, and they can exacerbate challenging health symptoms. Heres why.

Why no grains?

New U provides you online accountability, education and tools to make your health and weight loss goals a reality. We can work with anyone, anywhere.

Refined grains lack most of their original nutrients, but still contain almost all of the calories. The words whole grain on a product label dont mean the product was made with 100 percent whole grain. The Whole Grains Council allows the use of their whole grain stamp on products containing eight grams or more of whole grain ingredients per serving, even if the product contains more refined grain than whole grain. If you have more whole grains on your plate, then there is less of some other food, like protein or vegetables (foods that fill and fuel). You can and will get adequate carbohydrates from fruits and vegetables. You will also get a happier gut, a leaner body and the chance at more balanced hormones and better health.

Legumes are a plant family, and include all types of beans, peas, lentils and peanuts. Legumes, like whole grains, contain phytates. Phytates bind many of the minerals present in the seed, making them unavailable to our bodies. Many of the nutrients you take in dont get assimilated into the cells. Removing

phytates requires soaking the food for at least 12 hours and then drying them. Some of the short chain carbohydrates (sugars) found in legumes arent properly absorbed in the small intestine. They then act as food for bacteria living in the intestines. The bacteria can ferment (digest) these carbohydrates, which will create gas and bloating. If you have an overgrowth of gut bacteria (common for us Americans), large amounts of this specific type of carbohydrate will feed the bad bacteria, encouraging gut dysbiosis. Once you have dysbiosis, you are opened up to a host of inflammation issues, including the inability to properly heal, a lack of energy and, worse, the possibility of getting very sick. Peanuts. I know, and Im sorry to be the bearer of bad news. They contain a protein structure called lectin. Lectins are very resistant to digestion. Lectins in peanuts are not destroyed by heat as the lectins in some beans are. They dont break down and can get into your circulatory system, inducing an immune response. Im sure you can recall a time when you ate peanuts, had a bowel movement and saw particles of those peanuts in your stool. Proof!

Why no dairy?

In one year and out the other

By Dr. James E. Todd Jr., DCH
A NEW YEARS RESOLUTION IS SOMETHING THAT GOES IN ONE YEAR AND OUT THE OTHER.

New Years resolutions are new and exciting opportunities to set goals and make positive changes in our lives. The number one resolution each year is weight loss. For many Americans, it might be time to make that resolution. According to National Heart Association statistics from 2013, 23.9 million children ages two to 19 are overweight or obese (over five times higher than 40 years ago). Of adults 20 years old and older, 154.7 million are overweight or obese. In 1960, 11 percent of men and 16 percent of women were overweight or obese; now its 34 and 36 percent, respectively. If current trends continue, total healthcare costs attributable to obesity could reach anywhere between $861 and $957 billion by 2030, which would account for 16 to 18 percent of US healthcare expenditures. This is a serious problem that affects all of us. Why is this happening? I could write a whole page just on this subject. For now, lets just say that much of it can be attributed to our sedentary lifestyles: the fastfood, quick meal mentality not like the good old days when we ate out of our parents and grandparents gardens. But theres a very good reason more people dont lose weight: its hard!
www.naturespathways.com

Theres no denying it: trying to lose weight can be a long and challenging journey. If youve ever tried and failed to lose weight before, then you probably know just how frustrating it can be, especially when feelings of stress, low selfesteem, sadness and boredom crop up. Its not unusual for people to get into a cycle of dieting, overeating, feeling guilty and then dieting again. You may have heard this referred to as yoyo dieting, and it makes weight loss difficult to sustain.

Weight loss is usually best achieved with diet and exercise. If youve tried diet and exercise but are still struggling to meet your weight-loss goal, a proven option to consider is hypnosis. While fad diets and nutrition plans focus on what you put in your mouth and how often, hypnotherapy changes how you feel about what you eat. For instance on a diet, you might eat a carrot and wish you were eating carrot cake, but with

Our pets are made up of the same things we are: flesh, blood, muscles, organs, etc. Their bodies, like ours, have requirements that can only be met by whole, fresh foods. Now one of the arguments I hear a lot is, If I give my pet people food, then theyre just going to beg for it from that point on. I have two thoughts on that. The first is that if you are feeding whole, fresh food, then your animal is going to be much more satisfied after theyve eaten versus if you feed them a processed diet. Most processed diets have a lot of fillers and carbs in them, which can make your pet feel full, initially, but it wears off pretty quickly. The processed food youre feeding, whether its the best or the worst, isnt truly meeting your pets nutritional requirements on a cellular level. In other words, the food isnt full of ingredients that their body can easily recognize and use. By the time the food has been cooked at very high temperatures and then subjected to very high pressure, many of the actual nutrients that may have existed at one time are gone. Sure, its filling up the belly, and from a scientific standpoint its meeting their minimum nutritional requirements. But is that really enough for them to thrive?
www.naturespathways.com

So back to my original point: give them some real food! A satiated pet is less likely to beg. Real, fresh food will satisfy their need for the nutrients that their body craves. Add some of your leftover chicken or roast beef. Give them some eggs once or twice a week, lightly poached. Got a little broccoli or carrots left over? Chop them up and throw them in. Got that spring mix lettuce? Puree some up (a tablespoon or two) and mix it in with your pets food. Its loaded with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants in their natural state, which your pets body is going to be able to recognize and use much more readily than the vitamins and minerals that are added to commercial pet foods. Point number two: the begging. I think that has a lot more to do with how you serve the real food than the fact that you gave them real food to begin with. Share the leftovers with them at the time youre portioning out their meal. Add it to their bowl, dont feed them directly from your plate or from the table. One last thought. If your pet has never had real food before and youre concerned about how their body might react, then I would suggest you start out slow. Give your pet a little piece of cooked chicken or beef in between meals as a treat. Then wait to see how their body reacts. Watch the poop! It can be a real telltale sign. If theyre having some issues, then reduce the amount or the frequency. If they seem to tolerate the dietary changes well, then give a little bit more, a little bit more often. Once you feel comfortable, start adding some of your leftovers regularly to each of their meals. Dont forget: as youre adding real food to their meals, youll need to take some of that commercial food away so as not to create a healthier but heavier pet. Its all still calories. And like us, we know what additional calories equal. We dont want to exchange one problem for another!

in it than any other food group. Cows are fed commercial GMO seed that has a profoundly negative impact on our health. Our detoxification systems are not meant to have to work this hard to assimilate some vitamins and minerals. You get more calcium from 2 cups of spinach then you do in an 8 ounce glass of milk. Milk contains casein, a form of protein. Casein exorphins are milk derived protein fragments that are able to cross the gut barrier in adults with increased gut permeability (think digestive issues). They slow down the movement of food through the gut. Again, it comes down to what the body can break down and use, and conventional milk isnt high on the list. Casein frequently causes a histamine response, which leads to headaches, gastrointestinal upset and increased allergies. Milk contains whey as well. Lactose plus dairy whey protein cause the release of large amounts of insulin. Large amounts of insulin in adults does not promote a healthy hormonal response. If you are trying to improve your insulin response (many of us should), keeping milk to a minimum or eliminating it in our diets is advisable. Calcium absorption is inhibited by phytates found in grains and legumes, and by stress and the aging process. Inadequate protein intake reduces calcium absorption also. Lastly, vitamins D and K must accompany fat in order to be absorbed into cells, which is why a low-fat diet will impair your bodys ability to absorb these vitamins. Arm yourself with knowledge and get ready to feel and look your best in 2014.

hypnotherapy you can learn to enjoy the carrot and not give that cake a second thought. It might be hard to imagine a world where youd happily turn down your favorite junk food for something healthier, but with certain hypnotherapy techniques, it may be possible to change your thinking patterns and gain control over cravings in a way that doesnt depress you. By targeting the unconscious mind with powerful suggestion techniques, a hypnotherapist will help you develop a new, positive relationship with food and exercise. The aim is to make you feel confident about your body, change any negative thoughts you might have about eating and help you lose weight healthily and responsibly without impacting your emotional wellbeing. One hypnotherapy weight-loss option that has been featured on Dr. Oz and other television programs is the virtual gastric band. The virtual gastric band method is a non-surgical technique which uses the power of hypnosis to retrain your mind so that you will be satisfied with smaller amounts of food. It changes how you think about food and gives very safe, very predictable results. The hypnotist will convince your brain that the stomach is full after a certain level of intake, and that there is no need for more food. This method has all the health benefits of conventional gastric banding procedures, but with no invasive surgery, no complications and no fears about having surgery. Plus, you are free to resume work immediately! If youre struggling to lose weight and keep it off, why not give hypnotherapy a try? It might just help you keep that New Years resolution all year long.

Fight the immune challenge winter brings with echinacea

By Kristina Amelong
inter brings a lot to look forward to: the crisp, cold, purifying air, the graceful snow cover and the hearty meals that nourish our bodies. Unfortunately, winter also brings a change in immune burdens. Its common for many to experience some type of immune challenge this time of year. But, before we run to the store to stock up on cough drops and cold medicine, lets consider something more natural that works preventatively. Something that if taken every day, can prevent the onset of sickness. What Im referring to is echinacea. Echinacea is a powerful herb. Yet, many report it didnt work for them, or they felt no change after taking it. Echinacea is not only one of the most well-known herbs, but also the most misunderstood. Why can two people have completely different results with the same herb? To answer this question, we have to start at the beginning. Most of what we know about therapeutic plants comes from the native inhabitants of the countries or areas that use those things. It was the Native American tribes here in the United States that pioneered the use of echinacea. They exclusively used the rootof the Echinacea angustifolia plant. They used this not only as a remedy for more ailments than any other plant, but also to treat a wide variety of issues. The most common species of echinacea is Echinacea purpurea. This grows in abundance all over the United States. Echinacea angustifolia, on the other hand, only grows in certain soil types. Its plentiful in South Dakota, for instance. Even if the purpurea variety was in abundance, neighboring Native American tribes traded for the angustifolia species. Native tribes also used to assess the quality of the herb by chewing on the roots and experiencing the tingling sensation in their mouths.
22
Natures Pathways | January 2014

By 1921, echinacea was the most popular herb being manufactured and sold in the United States. In the early 30s, a man named Gerhard Madaus, a German homeopath, went back to Germany and focused his manufacturing on Echinacea purpurea. Instead of using the root, he used the aerial part of the plant (flowers and leaves). When you get the right plant or herb, theres no mystery about how the plant exerts its effect. Theres chemistry within the plant called phytochemicals, and its these phytochemicals that drive the therapeutic or pharmacological activity that brings balance back to the body. However, if you dont have the chemistry as the plant intended it to be in the finished product, you cannot expect the product to exert any effect. This is essentially what happened with echinacea in the 1930s. The traditional use and extraction methods were disregarded in order to produce the product on a larger scale. Within Echinacea, there are key active phytochemicals, one of which is alkylamides. It was later discovered that the tingling sensation is directly related to the amount of alkylamides in the product. Its interesting to note that the aerial part of the plant contains very low levels of alkylamides. Its these alkylamides in the echinacea that drive the therapeutic effect. Not only is there a difference in species with regard to therapeutic effect, theres also a difference between parts of the plant. Another reason theres much confusion about this herb is because of the research. Some research concludes the herb was effective in the study while other research states just the opposite. However, when the research is done using an extract of the root that is standardized for alkylamides, the research is conclusive: Echinacea does have a positive outcome. Its now concluded that echinacea works best long term, used preventatively, rather

than simply at the onset of sickness. No wonder weve heard such inconclusive feedback from friends, family and doctors. Weve been taking the wrong extract at the wrong time! As the cold weather continues, invest in your health and wellbeing. Look for an echinacea product that contains the angustifolia species. Then, make sure the company has labeled the amount of alkylamides per tablet. Much of the research using echinacea standardized for alkylamides used between 4-12mg of alkylamides. If youre really not sure, suck on the tablet for 30 seconds to 1 minute; your mouth should begin to tingle. This is a sign of the level of alkylamides and, therefore, the products effectiveness. Personally, I recommend Echinacea Premium from MediHerb, as each tablet contains 4.1mg of alkylamides.

We all have the best intentions at the start of a new year, but then reality sets in and the chaos of life simply happens. Many of us find ourselves once again discouraged and defeated. We have

once again set ourselves up for failure. But it doesnt have to be that way. What if you could make a resolution you could keep and actually hold onto? One that would reap both external as well as internal physical benefits. Sound intriguing? Consider the multitude of health benefits of a full body massage scheduled regularly. Dr. Mehmet Oz, former director of the Cardiovascular

Institute at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/Columbia University Medical Center, believes so strongly in the benefits of massage that he considers it a mandatory weekly prescription for himself. So how can massage help a persons overall health and well-being, and improve ones physical appearance, too? Lets start with the basics and first explain exactly what a massage is.

Massage is a hands on treatment in which a therapist manipulates muscles and other soft tissues of the body with pressure ranging from gentle strokes and kneading to deep tissue manipulation and possible incorporation of trigger points. There are nearly 100 different types of massage and body work techniques, each uniquely designed to achieve a particular outcome. So how exactly does massage work? Human touch has been shown to be emotionally as well as physically healing, and may be used as a means to either stimulate or relax the bodys muscles and tissues. Mark Rapaport, MD, former chairman of the Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Neurosciences at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, led a study comparing 53 healthy individuals who received one of two types of massage treatments. One was a moderate pressure massage and the other a light touch treatment. He then measured components of their blood and found those with moderate pressure treatment had a decrease in stress hormones and an increase in white blood cells, indicating a boost in the immune system. Those

with the lighter pressure massage showed higher levels of oxytocin, a hormone which promotes bonding. The findings led Dr.Rapaport to conclude that massage could be used in the treatment of inflammatory and autoimmune conditions. Other research has found that physical contact can trigger a boost in serotonin, a natural antidepressant that may have a positive effect on anxiety and depression. Additionally, Dr.Rapaports research supports the theory that there are biological changes associated with a single massage session, which is quite significant. Massage therapy is also useful for the treatment of a multitude of medical conditions, such as musculoskeletal problems, osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. It can decrease inflammation, improve autoimmune disorders, improve circulation, release nerve compression, reduce blood pressure, alleviate sleep disorders, improve sprains and strains, ease chronic constipation, increase flexibility and range of motion, increase energy and vitality, reduce stress and help in weight reduction. Yes, help in weight reduction. Not only that, it can improve skin

appearance. Massage can help a person lose extra water weight and keep the skin tighter by eliminating fluid build-up that can lead to puffiness and bloating, especially in the mid-section and face. And the production of the hormone cortisol, which is released during times of stress, is reduced by massage therapy, thereby reducing cravings for high calorie carbohydrates and sweets which contribute to weight gain. Massage therapy is not the panacea for all things, but the positive effects are numerous and ever increasing as research and time continue. So why not make a resolution that can be kept: bestow upon yourself the wonderful benefits of a weekly, bi-weekly or even monthly massage, and improve the quality of your life, today and in the future. Finally a resolution you can feel good about!

Do-be-do-be-do
A parable for the new year
By Cecilia Farran

ts a new year, and it brings the desire and energy to wipe the slate clear: a new you, a new diet, a resolution to be more than you have been. But the excitement for new resolutions usually fades, leaving us wondering what happened. Perhaps our resolutions were unrealistic in that they did not account for supportive energies that surround us. Perhaps it was because we failed to open ourselves and fine-tune to that bigger picture. A year ago, the rhetoric of 2012 told us that new energies and portals were now available. We were hopeful, but most of us more or less forgot, and have continued to struggle through another year to just keep on keeping on and on. Throughout 2013, I have seen a thread that might give a clue as to how to approach this new year of 2014. Conversations with likeminded individuals constantly come round to, life is just crazy, spinning out of control, too much to do, too little time. Too many demands. Everyone is overtaxed, and in the words of Bilbo Baggins in The Lord of the Rings, folks feel like jam too thinly spread on bread. Or as a friend put it, Ive got too many windows open and Im going to crash. Everyone seems to have their own version of how craziness is playing out in their

lives, but is anyone actually thinking about what that tossed off comment life is crazy means? Many blame themselves for not measuring up to a standard they have set based on beliefs of what should be. Perhaps there needs to be a redefining of the word obligation. Maybe this ubiquitous sense of being overwhelmed, of too little jam, too much bread, is a great opportunity for us to realize that within the growing discomfort is perhaps a message to sit down and ask ourselves, Just what is going on here? Is there deeper meaning? And how shall I navigate whats going on?

Do-be-do-be-do: a parable

I asked a young man, What would you rather be: a human being or a human doing? The young man replied, I dont know what youre talking about and besides, Ive got work to do. I havent any time to sit here and talk. I asked a middle-aged mother, Do you consider yourself a human being or a human doing? She answered quickly, I would like to have a deeper life, but there isnt time to do anything deeper than do. I am a single mother, working, loving my two kids and

doing all the things a mother has to do. I wish I had time for me. I asked a quiet, wise old woman sitting on her porch as the sun slanted beams between the trees: Do you aspire to do or to be? She said, I have lived through much time and I have taken time to step outside of time. I have finally learned to do being. Do. Be. Do. Be. Do Do being. Wow! Could it be that stress is a test to see which we choose: the being of light, peace and trust or the do-do-do illusion that is supported by mindless scramble in lockstep with no questions asked? Maybe we can ease the throttle a bit and cease our head-voice that tells us we must be forever doing. Maybe we can explore the idea of being. Oh, expect to chafe a bit and squirm in the openness of it. Our minds want us to bolt to action, and the old belief that we must be forever in action is deeply set, but we can reset and the revelations can get through. If you truly want to begin, I urge you to hit refresh. Take time. Sit with your morning tea. Be still. Wonder. Let new data pour into the quiet spaces. When you come back online with yourself, you might find the first glimmer of joy. You might find that you can keep on being a productive person, but that along with that, your emphasis need not be on obligation/accomplishment, but on finding a deeper meaning and learning that in a mindful way, you can do being.

Weight loss for the mind

By Rev. Deborah Phelps

n America, the top New Years resolution is to lose weight. If thats your resolution, I wish you the best. But have you thought about the extra weight youre carrying around in your

mind? That weight can be guilt, remorse or regret that pulls you down into sadness and even depression. Did you know that if you heal your mind, it can be easier to shed those extra pounds from your body? We often overeat because were unhappy, so lets take a look at how to lose the weight of unhappiness. To be happy is to have inner peace. Thats what we all want for Christmas, Hanukah and the New Year! While this might sound simplistic, Ive experienced that inner peace is happiness in my own life and witnessed it in the lives of many people during my 20-plus years of teaching A Course in Miracles, a spiritual text that shows us how to heal our minds. Inner peace gives us a different way of looking at and living in the world. We feel connected to our source and to others. We can let go of our grievances. Our mood stabilizes. We smile and feel joy more often. Those nagging problems dont feel like such a big deal anymore. Let me share a few tried-and-proven steps to get you started. First, realize that the past is over. It cannot really touch us in the here and now. We can feel inner peace by putting the past into perspective and choosing another way to think about past experiences, situations, mistakes and so on. In this way, we can stop the past from encroaching on the present and imposing its heavy weight of guilt, regret and remorse. But part of us doesnt want to release the past. This is the ego, and it clings to past pain and obstructs inner peace with

How clearly do you see yourself in the eyes of others?

By Don Neviaser
f, during a variety of interactions with others, their responses seem more negative than the messages you intended to convey, or if you sometimes feel others just dont seem to like you for some reason, perhaps its time to consider the source. Is it possible your messages and actions are not being accurately received because of your delivery? Could there be something in your emotional background adding an unwarranted debasing lean to your perceptions of how others see you? And if so, might you be reacting in line with these false perceptions, even though they are solely a product of your past? It can be difficult to plug into a variety of interactions when your self-perception is shrouded by self-doubt, uncertainty or selfloathing. With such a negative mindset of self-perceptions, it can be hard to imagine that others may actually see and like you better than you perceive yourself. As a result, it is common to project these same negative self-perceptions onto how others see you. This often causes you to react to them with varying degrees of defensive posturing in line with how you believe they see you, regardless of what their actual view or intention may be. These unwarranted reactions are then reacted to accordingly by them. Ironically, negative reactions to negative reactions based on false pretenses, in the eye of the original beholder, simply verify the original negative assumptions of the perspectives others have and the subsequent reactions that got the ball rolling in the first place. Unfortunately, such interactions can all too easily damage or destroy a variety of personal and professional relationships and opportunities, completely unnecessarily! Regardless of why you may shroud yourself in negative selfperceptions, they are, in fact, a matter of perspective and perspectives can be changed. New ones can be learned. In fact, its something you do every time you change your mind or learn something new. But how well you counter, control or change such perceptions

The inside work of the real estate process

By Sara Alvarado

e can read books and watch YouTube videos all day long to get tips on how to do things right. But when it comes down to it, the best way often involves knowing how we work best and listening to our own intuition.

The same applies to real estate. When asked about the best time to buy or sell, I often turn the question around. Look inside: what is best for you and your situation? If you dont have enough money for a down payment or your credit score is too

low, it doesnt matter what time of the year it is, or how great the interest rates are. It is not the right time to buy. If you have a great job opportunity and feel like now is the time to move, dont let someone tell you to wait until spring to sell your home because that is the best time. Listen to your gut. Timing is an important part of the process and it is specific to your situation! Before you start looking at homes or preparing your home for showings, take some time to do the inside work. Here are some important questions to ask: 1. ARE YOU WILLING? The question behind this question relates to your motivation level. What is your motivation? Why do you want to move? What will it look like when you are where you want to be? Are you and your partner on the same page? Getting clear and setting a clear intention is the first strong step. 2. ARE YOU ABLE? If there are strong reasons for you to want to move (you are willing) and you are in the right place financially to buy or sell (you are able), then it is time for you to buy or sell. There are situations when a homeowner is willing and very motivated to sell their home, but the home is worth less than they
www.naturespathways.com

Natures Pathways | January 2014

can afford to sell it for. It is very possible to be willing but not able. It is also possible to be able to buy, but not willing. 3. HOW DO I MAKE DECISIONS? Am I a decisive or indecisive person? If you are a decisive person, you might create a list of what you want, find something you like, make an offer and buy. It can be that easy. And it can happen fast. If you tend to be an indecisive person, it is helpful to know this and understand that it might affect the process. If the type of house you are looking for is in high demand (based on price and location), you might find yourself in competition with other buyers and feel pressured to decide quickly. This is stressful for someone who likes to take some time and maybe sleep on it. Still, if believe you should sleep on it, do! Once you are clear, you can put your team together to help you with the next steps. A lender will help you determine what price range you are qualified for. Listen to your intuition. You might be approved for more than you are comfortable spending. In the first meeting with a realtor, you should review some of the inside questions youve answered to find a good fit for you. Again, how does it feel? Are these the right people to work with? You want to feel connected and clear about expectations for the process. As the market improves and homes start selling faster, it is helpful to understand how timing works and to trust the process. If you lose a house, please know, there is another house out there for you, and it will be better than the one you lost. You will end up in the home you are meant to be in. Sometimes it is part of the process to write offers on more than one home before you get the right one. Do not get discouraged. Trust the process. Trust yourself. Believe that it will all work out the way it is supposed to work out and then smile. Because this can be fun too!

EIGHT LOSS FOR THE MIND W continued from page 28

its relentless negative thoughts and condemnation. But there is another voice in our minds, our inner divine voice that comes from our source. This kind and loving voice tells us that we can see things differently. It whispers to us that the past exists only in our thoughts. We cant smell, taste or touch the past, no matter how real it seems in our minds. The past is like a dream that we keep revisiting, over and over. Second, we need to release the past. Releasing is a skill that we can get better and better at. We can actually free ourselves of the weight of guilt, pain and hurt; instead of those wretched states, we can accept our true nature, which is light, joy and peace. Our divine assistance can help us let go of the past, change our perspective and live from our true nature. Lets practice this skill. Close your eyes. Take a few deep breaths. Think about a past event that upsets you. Allow yourself to feel upset, but do so as an observer. Only observe. Dont interact with your feelings or thoughts. Realize that you do not like what you are feeling. Ask your divine assistance to help you to realize that every past difficulty bears within it the seeds of an ultimate gift. Then be

willing to release the feelings and to choose to think differently. To help with this, ask yourself the following: What is the good in this event? What can I learn from this? How can I use this lesson to help me now? Is there something about this event that I can have gratitude for? Allow the inner divine voice to help you answer those questions, even if you find the process difficult. Once you have a little willingness to see from a new perspective, answers will come maybe right away or maybe later. The divine assistance always answers when were willing to see another way. This is how we change our minds. This is how we can release the burdens that have weighed us down and experience lasting, real peace. This is how we heal our minds. Its the true miracle, and it may even help you drop a few pounds.

What to do on a personal retreat

Taking time out for yourself
By Jill Carlson

ace it. Life is hectic. The job, the kids, the extended family home, bills, finances, friends, emails, texts, pets and other obligations all add up, not only to make life full, but also to bring stress and anxiety to our bodies and minds. Taking time out for a personal retreat to provide some solitude in your life is helpful to reboot your coping mechanism and quiet your mind. A web search for retreat centers garners a list of locations to choose from. So youve made the reservations, made arrangements for childcare, taken time off from work, covered any other commitments and traveled to the retreat location. What do you do once you get to the center? Slow down and rest, says Jody Crowley Beers, a Madisonbased student of spirituality, counseling and natural science. Most of us live at a running pace, never having enough time to do all of the things we want to do. Crowley Beers added that sleep is one way to guide oneself into a retreat environment: its OK to give yourself permission to sleep before doing anything else. Some of her other suggestions for what to do on a personal retreat include: Do nothing. Sit in a comfortable position with your back straight and feet on the floor. Pay attention to your breathing. Draw in peace with each breath and breathe out negative energy. Take a nature walk or sit outside in a location with a pleasing view. Let nature help your body feel its way into a slower pace. Write a letter to yourself. Ask, Where am I at this point in my life? or How am I feeling about myself, about my relationships? Or write a letter to a wisdom figure, an ancestor, yourself as a little child or an older version of you say, yourself in 10 years. Do a life review. Divide your life into decades; give a descriptive name to each decade. Write down life-changing events by decade. Discover how you feel about these now. What do you want the next decade of your life to bring? Make a list of your values. List what is really important to you and where that value came from (your mother, a childhood
Natures Pathways | January 2014

experience, church, etc.). Look closely at the list. Are there some values you want to reinforce? Can some be released? Are there some that have faded with time? Paint or draw as a way to get in touch with your inner reality. Remember that you arent creating a masterpiece, but getting in touch with a part of yourself. Have a dialogue with your body. While in a comfortable position in a quiet space, ask yourself, What am I feeling in my body at this time? Focus on areas that call out to you, such as a pain somewhere or tension in your back or neck. Take a life inventory. Think about the happiest times of your life and write them down. Think about when youve felt the saddest, the most alone, the most confident, the least confident. Write in a journal. Include responses to the question, What am I feeling? while journaling so that you are attuned to your feelings. Meditate. Focus your mind to reach an inner calmness and a sense of tranquility. Observe silence. Rather than feeling like you need to make conversation with others, take the time to fully engage in your own thoughts and feelings. During a personal retreat, you set your own schedule. While meals are usually at a set time, your time is your own to use as you wish. While it might be difficult at first to settle your mind down and actually relax, reminding yourself that calmness is what you need can be helpful. Some people take more than one day to fully calm the mind to relax while on a retreat because of new surroundings. Reserving more than one overnight is a good idea to help reach a state of relaxation and forget the stresses of your life.
Jill Carlson is the director of guest services at Holy Wisdom Monastery, 4200 County Road M, Middleton. Holy Wisdom offers personal retreats with overnight accommodations in the Retreat and Guest House and hermitages (small cabins), each with a personal bath. Four nature trails are open to the public. OW CLEARLY DO YOU SEE YOURSELF IN THE EYES OF OTHERS? H continued from page 29

depends on the internal countermeasures you employ to shift your interpretations of both you and your interactions with others. A key base-factor for making such deep-seated shifts of perception within is to begin by honestly giving yourself permission to be happy and accepting it fully in your heart. The more you accept that you are worthy of happiness and inner peace, the stronger the basis from which you will be able to more clearly see negative self-generalizations as counterintuitive and counterproductive to your true heart. Ironically, many resilient negative self-perceptions are actually great examples of how carrying and believing baseline perspectives, regardless of accuracy, can affect and influence your life! And this reality of thought and emotion can also be applied to more positive perceptions of yourself, others and much more! In other words, to help create better, more accurate views of yourself, try incorporating the same recipe of assumption, attitude and perspective that gave negative self-perceptions life in the first place. Literally utilize these same dynamics to create different, more positive views of yourself. A great way to clarify your interactions with others is with a less biased, third-party perception of yourself. A more neutral view can illuminate outward messaging, such as unwarranted body

language. It can help differentiate reality from assumption and actually clear the way for you to see and appreciate yourself for who you really are. Imagine yourself as just another person you do not know walking down the street, minus any negative suppositions. How many negativity labels would you be compelled to cast upon this unknown stranger? If your answer is none, then think about why you are so compelled to apply them to yourself. Continue making an honest, dedicated effort toward unprejudiced relative views of yourself and how you fit into the world. In fact, further your preferred reality by imagining how you would like to appear to or affect others. It is easier to reach a destination when you can see the path there. This whole process is not unlike putting prescription glasses on the eyes of your heart so you can see yourself and others more realistically. Reach out to this friend on the street and embrace your innermost person; within which resides your true heart!

The growing problem of peanut allergies

arents tend to be quite familiar with food allergies. In an effort to protect youngsters, schools have begun to crack down more regularly on foods that tend to cause allergic reactions, often placing restrictions on what children can bring in for lunches or snacks. Parents and children who grew up around peanut and tree nut allergies are quite familiar with what triggers allergic reactions associated with such foods, and the potential side effects of consuming these foods. But those who are less experienced with food allergies may not know what to expect. According to the Mayo Clinic, being allergic to nuts us one of the more common food allergies, especially among children. Many people who are allergic to peanuts are also allergic to other tree nuts, including walnuts, almonds and pecans. As with any allergen, reactions vary from person to person. Some may experience mild symptoms, such as light rashes or swelling, while others may have severe reactions, including anaphylactic shock, which is characterized by shortness of breath, a severe drop in blood pressure, constriction of airways and potential heart failure. According to Spire Health Partners, more than 3 million people in the United States have a nut allergy, and onethird of them will suffer from a severe symptom if they ingest nuts. A peanut allergy occurs when your body mistakenly identifies peanut proteins as something that can be harmful. Just as your body might fight a cold, it releases chemicals from the immune system to fight off the peanut invader. The number ofkidswith peanut allergies has been increasing over the last 10-15 years, doubling in the last half-decade alone. It isnt known why some people are prone to nut allergies while others are not. However, Michael C. Young, M.D., assistant clinical professor of pediatrics at Harvard Medical School and a practicing pediatrician at Childrens Hospital, has a few ideas. Nursing mothers and very

young children are eating more peanuts, particularly in the form of peanut butter, than ever before, something that Young feels could be causing a higher incidence rate of peanut allergies. Young also theorizes that better hygiene may play a role, suggesting that because children have fewer infections (due to improved hygiene and routine immunizations), their immune systems are more likely to target other things, such as foods and environmental factors, resulting in allergies. Although peanut allergies are prevalent and can be dangerous, there is no reason to act rashly. Young notes that approximately 20 percent of children will outgrow their peanut allergies by the age of 6, and he advises that it is worth having a child retested as they get older to gauge if there have been any changes in the status of the peanut allergy. When dealing with peanut allergies, it is important to separate myths from facts. Direct contact is the most common cause of a reaction. This results from eating peanuts or foods that contain peanuts. Cross-contamination, which occurs when peanuts unintentionally come into contact with other foods, is another common cause. Some people can have a reaction by touching peanuts with their skin. A rash may occur, but a very dangerous reaction will not result unless the peanuts enter the mouth or come into contact with the nose or eyes. An allergic reaction can occur from inhalation of peanut dust, such as peanut flour or ground shells during processing.

Are you an argument junkie?

By Barry Kerr

ike a good argument? I dont mean a fight. I mean a good, intellectual, logical argument, the kind that Socrates would enjoy. If your answer is yes, then congratulations; youre probably smarter than most others around you. Or at least you feel like it. It doesnt take much to pull some of us into an argument, if its about something we care about. It gives us a high, an adrenalin rush, a feeling of being purposeful and in our mastery. Some of us can go for hours. Sometimes, if our opponent is worthy, we even learn something new, with no hard feelings on either side. Right? Well, if you have mostly good experiences that draw the other people in an argument closer to you, then you might be well-balanced with this talent. But, if you find that at the end of arguments, you dont feel so good, and other people are feeling even worse, then its time to look at how your talent for logic is misplaced. When our need for argument is out of balance, our overconfident and forceful demeanor pushes people away. What we think we are proving is usually getting lost in a milieu of hurt feelings and a loss of trust and respect. This is especially surprising for those of us who consider ourselves gentler, non-aggressive types. Its certainly not our intention to overpower people, is it? Arent we just trying to build common truths and understandings? Helping others see the truth? Using calm, rational words? Unfortunately, argument seldom serves those positive intentions when done within personal relationships that matter to us. What might start as an agreeable argument between two people can easily evolve into a one-sided need to make ones point, while the other side struggles to find a way to end the whole thing and move on. Unless we are willing to drop it in a timely way, others leave our company with bad feelings. If we repeat this pattern over and over again with those close to us, they eventually choose to keep their intellectual or physical distance from us. We even risk losing relationships. We are left feeling smart and right, but emotionally we are left unfulfilled. Heres a poem written by a man who, through healing and coaching, came to terms with his own addiction to arguing: me. Do any of these apply to you?

I argue because I need to be right. I need to be right because, if I am not, I am wrong. If I am wrong, I will lose respect and am not worthy of being loved. If I am not loved, I will be alone. If I am alone, I will suffer. Show me I am lovable by seeing I am right! I argue because I need to be right. I need to be right because I need to save you from being wrong or youll be in danger. I may lose you. If I lose you, I cant love you. I will be alone and I will suffer. Please let me love you by seeing I am right! I argue because I need you to agree, because Im afraid I might be wrong. If you agree, then I have proven Im right. If you dont agree, then Im left wondering if I am wrong. Ill be confused and in danger. Others will have power over me. I will lose everything. Please agree with me or prove to me I am wrong. Just dont leave me alone in it!

herbBLURB

Butterbur
(Petasites hybridus)

utterbur is a shrub that grows in Europe and parts of Asia and North America, typically in wet, marshy ground. The name, butterbur, is attributed to the traditional use of its large leaves to wrap butter in warm weather. Butterbur has historically been used for a variety of health issues such as pain, headache, anxiety, cough, fever, and gastrointestinal and urinary tract conditions. It has also been used topically to improve wound healing. Today, traditional or folk uses include nasal allergies, allergic skin reactions, asthma and migraineheadache. The leaves, rhizomes (underground stems) and roots of butterbur are commonly used to make solid extracts used in tablets. Some butterbur extracts are also usedtopically.

What the sciencesays

An NCCAM-funded literature review reports that in a clinical trial of 125 participants, butterbur was just as effective as a commonly used oral antihistamine for allergy symptoms such as itchyeyes. According to one systematic literature review, there is evidence to support the effectiveness of butterbur for the treatment ofmigraines. There is some evidence that butterbur extract can decrease the symptoms associated with nasalallergies. There is not enough evidence to show efficacy and safety of butterbur for allergic skin reactions andasthma.

Several studies, including a few studies of children and adolescents, have reported that PA-free butterbur products are safe and well tolerated when taken by mouth in recommended doses for up to 12 to 16 weeks. The safety of longer-term use has not beenestablished. Butterbur can cause belching, headache, itchy eyes, gastrointestinal issues, asthma, fatigue and drowsiness. Butterbur may cause allergic reactions in people who are sensitive to plants such as ragweed, chrysanthemums, marigolds and daisies. Butterbur should only be given to children under the supervision of a qualified healthpractitioner. Tell all your health care providers about any complementary health approaches you use. Give them a full picture of what you do to manage your health. This will help ensure coordinated and safe care.

Side effects andcautions

The raw, unprocessed butterbur plant contains chemicals called pyrrolizidine alkaloids (PAs). PAs can cause liver damage and can result in serious illness. Only butterbur products that have been processed to remove PAs, and are labeled or certified as PA-free should beused.

Aerosol cooking sprays that contain peanut oil also can produce a reaction. It is important to note that the smell of peanuts will not induce an allergic reaction. Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York found that peanut proteins can be detected in some peoples saliva after eating peanuts. A kiss could transfer some of the peanut allergens to another person. Sometimes an allergy is not really an allergy, but rather an intolerance to a certain food. A food intolerance does not involve the immune system. A person with a food intolerance can eat small amounts of the food with only mild symptoms, such as indigestion, rather than a severe reaction with a true allergy. While being diligent in reading food labels and asking what ingredients are in prepared foods at restaurants is key for people with peanut allergies, so is avoiding potential skin contact. This means thoroughly washing areas where peanuts or peanut butter may have been and ensuring other children wash up after lunch. Peanut allergies are foremost on the minds of parents and educators. Understanding what is involved in a peanut allergy can help everyone make informed decisions about protecting youngsters.

I argue because I need you to agree. I dont like disagreement because my mind wants resolution. If my mind cannot find resolution, it doesnt feel good. I am my mind, therefore I will suffer. Please agree with me so I can rest! I argue because Im good at it.Even if I cant convince you, I can feel superior, because I argue better. Even if you are more educated, more talented, have more money, are better looking, I can feel superior because I argue better. Even if you deny me what I want, I can feel superior, because I argue better. Please argue with me because, there, I always win! I argue because Im avoiding my feelings. If its all about convincing and proving, then I get to stay in my head. I dont have to acknowledge what my body is saying, acknowledge my feelings or know I am afraid, sad, angry, joyful or lusting, nor feel it. If I dont feel my feelings, I can a avoid responsibility for them. Please keep arguing with me; I dont want to know the real truth!

Y D O B T FI P M A C T BOO : N O S I D A M ns to
olutio Sustainable s g strong keep you goin
ARMON BY JOSH H
SUSTAINABILITY. Its a word that gets tossed around a lot these days, mostly in marketing campaigns. Thanks to overuse, its easy to lose sight of what the term actually means: the ability to keep something going. But for Jade Bunk, owner of Fit Body Boot Camp Madison, sustainability is more than just a buzzword used to sell a product. For her, it describes a commitment to practical choices in all areas of life to keep our health going, to keep our community going, to keep our planet going Every part of her operation is dedicated to this mission. Whether through its green gym, its supportive team workouts or its sensible, realistic approach to healthy eating, Fit Body Boot Camp Madison has what it takes to keep you going and keep you going strong.

GREEN FITNESS
The one thing that most clearly sets Fit Body Madison apart from other area tness centers is the facility. Bunk has almost single-handedly created one of Wisconsins rst green gyms. Though Fit Body Boot Camp is a nationwide brand, every detail of the Madison location bears Bunks personal stamp. She oversaw every decision in the planning and building of her gym, and the entire place was designed following her ideals. I really went to great lengths to source nontoxic, environmentally friendly, green, sustainable, local and American-made, she states, to source according to my principles instead of what was cheap.

The gym oor is a good example. Its a kind of patchwork ode to recycled and repurposed materials. Most of the workout area is covered in soft, blue gymnastic mats made of 100 percent recycled bottles. Another portion is crafted entirely from recycled tires. And the remainder is covered with carpet squares that were bound for the landll before Ms. Bunk snatched them up to tie the room together. And thats just the oor. All of the paper products in the gym, as well as those used for outside communications and marketing, are recycled. Much of the exercise equipment itself has been recycled or repurposed. There are weights made from recycled metal; old tires, repurposed for workouts; monkey bars crafted by a local welder; medicine and slam balls made from recycled materials; golf balls and lacrosse balls repurposed for mobility exercises. If you can reuse it or recycle it, Bunk put it in her gym. Products used to clean the facility are ecofriendly, too. We use all green cleaning products to clean the gym, and have taken special care to make sure the air quality in the gym is the highest possible. To that end, Bunk installed a top-of-the-line air ltration system that not only lters the air, but also cleans it using ions and ozone. Clean, fresh and toxin-free. Whats more, Ms. Bunk has gone out of her way to buy American-made products. One of her favorite workout tools is the kettlebell, and shes proud of the fact that, while this

instrument may have originated in Russia, her kettlebells are manufactured right here in the U.S. We got our kettlebells from the only foundry in America still forging cast-iron kettlebells, 100 percent American-made. Though much of the exercise equipment in the gym is recycled or reclaimed, when she did have to buy something new, she bought American whenever possible. And the Made in the USA label isnt just out front in the workout areas where its visible. Our ofce supplies are sourced from American companies selling American-made goods, recycled or sustainably produced.

A HOLISTIC APPROACH
While the idea of a green gym may seem novel, it grew very naturally out of Jade Bunks approach to health and wellness. Her background is in holistic nutrition. She received certication as a holistic health coach (HHC) by the Institute of Integrative Nutrition. Her passion for healthy living started early. Since I can remember, I have always been interested in health and amazed by the human body. She states that she had studied holistic wellness as a kind of hobby for many years. However, it was a desire to help others that transformed her interest in diet, exercise and the bodys natural ability to heal itself into a career. Ive had a lot of really sick people in my life, and its what has inspired me to get involved. A few years ago, a close friend of hers was diagnosed with cancer. As someone who had gone

to great lengths to educate herself on staying healthy, she found his terminal illness as frustrating as it was tragic. She strongly believed that the root cause of his cancer was in his lifestyle. What was especially frustrating for her was that, despite her best efforts to advise her friend on trying to get and stay healthy, he didnt want to listen. I felt like perhaps if I had some sort of ofcial knowledge, he may have listened to me. There is no way to know, but this inspired me to pursue further education. From there, Bunk got her certication and became a freelance personal trainer, a job she performed for several years. This was a logical rst step as, by her own admission, she is a very independent-minded person. Why, then, would an intensely health-conscious maverick choose to spread her message from the platform of a large national tness chain? Her decision grew out of the limitations of training freelance. I can only inuence so many people working on my own. We can support so many people working in this environment, working as a community. Community is really big.

harder. In keeping with this motto, sessions are also designed to boost metabolism. Bunk points out that by effectively increasing your metabolism, you can even burn calories while you sleep!

SUSTAINABLE DIETS
The Fit Body Boot Camp support system covers not only exercise, but nutrition as well. Members are automatically enrolled in a program called Nourishing Nutrition and Lifestyle Action Coaching. This program, also unique to the Madison location, grew out of Bunks dissatisfaction with other existing programs. In her extensive studies on health and nutrition, she felt like she couldnt nd a single program that really broke down the ideal healthy lifestyle into manageable steps for average people. So she wrote her own. In it, participants receive weekly emails that break down good nutrition and healthy lifestyle actions into realistic, easy-to-follow steps. The goal is to help each individual nd what works for them by discovering whats reasonable. Unrealistic or overly demanding diet regimens are never imposed. We dont do restriction diets or unsustainable just eat this meal plans, Bunk says. Participants are encouraged to experiment with different parts of the program to see which elements work best for them. If members have questions or need a little extra help, Fit Body Boot Camp offers troubleshooting sessions on difcult topics and unlimited email support. As with all things at Fit Body Boot Camp Madison, the ultimate goal is sustainability. Bunk would like to see all of her community members nd ways to get and stay t, without putting unrealistic and painful demands on themselves. She hopes that with the support of herself, her staff and other fellow members, participants will feel consistently empowered to make healthy lifestyle decisions not just today, but every day. Its not just about losing weight, Bunk asserts, its about changing your life and your health!

THE BOOT CAMP COMMUNITY

While boot camp might sound intimidating, the atmosphere at Fit Body Boot Camp is anything but. Bunk is eager to point out that the environment is welcoming, non-judgmental and unintimidating. And in this group atmosphere, members enjoy an added benet that they cannot get working simply with a personal trainer a whole network of support. When you are a member of our family, Bunk says, you dont just have the support of one coach. You have a support team behind you! The term boot camp itself refers here not to any kind of military training, but rather to a program of intensive sessions meant to get participants into shape quickly. Workouts are designed to burn the maximum amount of fat in the minimum amount of time. Bunk describes them as short, intense, total body conditioning sessions, [using] a mix of resistance training, cardio and intensity. She is quick to emphasize, though, that intensity is what you make it. Its not just about constantly pushing yourself, but challenging yourself and pushing yourself to do your best intelligently, she says. The old mottos of no pain, no gain and just push harder are archaic, and we are learning better ways to do things. Our motto is, work smarter, not

To live fully is to feel

hen I began writing this article, I found myself humming the song Feelings by Morris Albert, 1975. I then researched the lyrics, discovering yet another example of a person not allowing feelings. Feelings, nothing more than feelings, trying to forget my feelings So what makes us fearful of feeling our emotions? Is it that we receive messages from family, friends and society that feeling is not OK? Is it that we are told by others that our feelings are not real

or true; and therefore grow to mistrust our own feelings? Does this cause more doubt about how we are feeling, driving us to attempt to hide even more? All of us have stories about how things happened to us, what people have done or not done and how we handled the emotions at the time. We all carry emotions from our past. Even to this day, when those emotions are brought up, we can still feel as though we just went through the experience that caused them. This stuck emotion that we carry can keep us stuck in the same

patterns and limit us from being our true selves. The current epidemic of addictions is evidence that we attempt to numb, deny, or suppress feelings. These unfelt emotions can still be lingering in your energy field and, therefore, can still be affecting you. Something really wonderful occurs when we allow ourselves to feel our emotions. The benefits include a sense of being with the world, in flow with life, an increased ability to handle everyday life and yes, even challenges that may arise. Further benefits are increased states of joy, happiness and pleasure. Suppression of emotions can be felt at a body level. These can be felt as tension in the head, neck, and chest area, as constriction, sensations, muscle aches and dull pains in the body. Our body is talking to us isnt it time to listen? Feelings are not good, bad, right or wrong they just are. We dont have to label or judge our feelings. We need to accept them just as they are. Feeling our feelings means we validate them. We identify them, acknowledge them, accept them and allow them to flow through us, so as not to get stuck. Feeling keeps us in the present moment and keeps us connected with, rather than separated from, ourselves and others.

6 ways to practice feeling

them. Ask often, How am I feeling? Be certain not to neglect a daily check-in, even if you are feeling good. This is helpful, too, because when we experience and focus on positive emotions, it will attract more positives. It also provides a context for when we are feeling those more difficult and challenging times. Each day, give yourself time to connect to your body: Get quiet and reflect. Use your body as a way to gauge what is happening emotionally. Ask your body, not your brain, what you need for your highest healing purpose. Regular journaling: Writing is free, easy and an effective way to clear blocks, emotions and the past. Journaling just requires your commitment and your own permission to express yourself freely. Bedtime follow-up: Before bed each night, do a quick review of your day and identify any challenges/issues that arose. Then let go of the day by giving it up to God or the universe and make the intention to start fresh the next day. Crying: Give yourself permission to cry. It is a release, and will help the emotions flow rather than get stuck. If you feel uncomfortable, do your crying in a private place, such as the shower. Visual/energetic imagery practice: clearing and releasing emotional energy: While showering, you can visualize all the negativity washing away and going down the drain. Observe the results. Visualize lying on a beach with the waves coming in and out. When the waves go out, visualize them carrying what no longer serves you and that which you wish to clear. Visualize these things being taken out to sea. Use audio recordings of waves to assist. Observe the results. Most importantly, love yourself through all your feelings. Come from your heart and allow yourself to develop a regular practice of fully feeling and healing because you are worth it!

Happiness habits: cultivating appreciation

By Lysianne Unruh

id 2013 deliver some unexpected challenges? Perhaps a diagnosis of infertility took you by surprise; or a longterm relationship dissolved; a friendship abruptly ended; or you experienced a job loss; or maybe you are transitioning to an empty nest and finding it disconcerting. What would it be like to navigate 2014 more easily? Life events, certainly the unexpected ones, can ladle out a heaping, if not giant, portion of personal growth. And, let me guess, you said, Thank you, as you stared at the steaming pile on your plate. Wow, I really appreciate this life lesson, and on a silver platter, too! If expressions of appreciation or gratitude didnt tumble easily out of your mouth as you faced your unique challenge, youre not particularly unusual. All emotions have their place. Negative emotions serve to limit our thoughts and behaviors, helping us to act decisively during times of stress and danger. Positive emotions, by contrast, serve to expand our social, cognitive, and physical resources. Studies conducted by researcher Barbara Frederickson of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill concluded positive emotions enable us to be more curious, sociable, and creative; our immune

and cardiovascular systems work better and get a boost. Harnessing the power of appreciation during times of challenge and change is one of the secrets to navigating the upset gracefully. Appreciation, when actively practiced, leads to greater selfacceptance, better coping, and perhaps most importantly, it is an emotional state which increases the likelihood of us receiving the beneficial and needed support from others in our circle. Appreciation is an expansive word. Its definition includes gratitude, the quality or feeling of being grateful or thankful. It also encompasses the act of valuing or recognizing the best in people

or the world around us; affirming past and present strengths, successes, and potentials. It also embraces awareness; the ability to be sensitive to and fully conscious of life giving forces health, vitality, excellence. Because of its expansiveness, actively practicing appreciation opens up the potential for our unique form of greatness to take shape.
Appreciation of ordinary things: Do a 30-second experiment in appreciation right now. Look around your environment until your eye lights on something ordinary something you may have seen a thousand times before perhaps your morning coffee cup. Study it carefully, appreciating its unique shape, color, texture. Appreciate the effort of those who designed it and those who brainstormed the witty caption. Appreciate the labor of the many hands involved in harvesting and roasting the coffee beans. Place awareness on life-giving forces: Recently an individual very dear to me was diagnosed with Multiple Scoliosis (MS). Instead of worrying about what is out of her control, she has chosen to focuses her energy on appreciating the advancement of modern medicine, which has proven effective in preventing the growth of new lesions known to attack the nervous system. Lead with appreciation: Spend a few minutes in the morning generating genuine appreciations for the people you are likely to interact with that day. Focus particular attention on individuals with whom you might have a difficult relationship, and generate a list of at least five qualities you can appreciate and admire in them. Handwritten notes of gratitude to the individuals who help make your life easier, sweet and more fun is an especially fantastic way to express appreciation. Practice self-appreciation: Personal change expert M.J. Ryan assures us, Self-appreciation is powerful stuff: it reinforces the behavior we want to bring into being. It tells the brain: do more of this. As you focus and establish new habits in 2014, be grateful for how much you accomplish each day towards your goals. Celebrating our successes allows us to recognize the positive in ourselves; we come closer to living that greatness in all its dimensions. Appreciation broadens our focus. It moves us from fear into celebrating the ordinary, the magnificent, the best in ourselves and our friends and family. A daily practice of it reinforces what is good and all that is right and well in our world, especially during times of crisis, challenge or change.

A monthly advice column for your energy system

By Tina Bensman

Everything in the universe contains energy, yet energy is something many of us dont understand. Every month Tina Bensman, a practicing clairvoyant and energy healer, is here to answer any questions you have about your energy system. Topics may include energy anatomy, dream analysis, chakra balancing, manifestation, life patterns, etc. The ideas written here do not replace medical attention. Always listen to your body, mind and intuition when receiving advice of any kind. Dear Tina, I did it. I finally, finally made a promise to myself that I am actually excited to try and keep. My New Years resolution this year is to focus on what my body is telling me it needs and to stay true to myself. Its a little vague, I know, but Im excited that I actually want this now and Im not playing victim anymore. How can I keep this promise and not let my New Years resolution fizzle out? I dont want to go back to those pity parties in my head ever again! Here I Come! Dear Here I Come, What a fantastic New Years resolution! It is very easy to get stuck in poor habits and self-defeating behaviors, and its important to try and get back on track when you have the motivation to do so. Resolutions like this unfortunately do have a tendency to get broken because of beliefs, habits or other people that affect your lifestyle and your beliefs and habits when you are around them. In some cases, it can be easier to break the resolution than to face those challenges. In any case, there are a number of ways to keep New Years resolutions or, in fact, any goal at all. Here are my four favorite tips:
44
Natures Pathways | January 2014

1. SHOUT IT TO THE WORLD!

You might not be surprised at all to know that most people keep their true resolutions a secret, and it makes sense. Why tell others that I want to do something if I dont really think I will accomplish it? Ill tell you why. If you are really serious about a goal, you need to be kept accountable. This is hard stuff here, and if it were easy, we would have already done it. So dont keep it a secret. Shout it to the world!
2. HAVE A VISION

Guess what? If you cannot imagine yourself succeeding, you wont. Seriously. Im not just talking about positive thinking here. Im talking about core beliefs. If there is a part of you that believes you will never accomplish this, that part of you will be pounding on the door in your mind saying, Just give it up. You know this isnt going to last, so whats the point in fighting it? Would you give that advice to a friend? No. So dont give it to yourself, either. Imagine yourself successful and listen to any parts of you that try to shoot down that idea. Then work with those parts to get them in on the plan. Speaking of plans
3. HAVE A PLAN

Yes, resolutions take work. Before yes before the first of the year, create a plan for how you will accomplish your goal. What will you do, notice about yourself, think about, or whatever applies
www.naturespathways.com

to your specific goal? When you have a plan, there is little room for that skeptical part of you to come out and speak up. Just tell it, Hey, skeptic lets just try this plan and see what happens. Stick to the plan, revise it, if necessary, and keep going. You can do it!
4. GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK FOR GOODNESS SAKE!

Everybody slips up and makes mistakes. In fact, its probably not a slip-up at all. When you are attempting to break a habit or change a belief, it is extremely difficult. This is likely all youve known for a long time. Its actually a miracle that its changing. So, give yourself a break if you forget or even choose to not follow the plan for a brief second. Now you can continue the plan as you desired without the extra heavy weight of guilt, pressure or judgment. A resolution doesnt mean you will instantly get it perfect, right? Give yourself a break! Good luck, and let us know how you are doing with your resolution so that you can shout it to the world and we can support you back. In fact, that goes for all of you readers out there. to crawl out of my skin. People with neuropathy are often told there is very little they can do to stop or reverse the demyelination process. At best, pharmaceutical medications only mask the symptoms to provide temporary relief. Common symptoms of peripheral neuropathy (often associated with aging) include: Fatigue and muscle weakness Clumsiness and loss of balance Loss of sensation in any part of the body Tremors and loss of fine motor skills Pain, burning and numbness in the extremities Another type of neuropathy with serious consequences occurs when the tenth cranial nerve, the vagus nerve, demyelinates. This nerve flows from the brain all the way to the bladder with branches affecting all the major organs, including the heart, digestive system, intestines and bladder. Symptoms of vagus nerve demyelination usually begin with the bladder and work their way up the nerve pathway. Common symptoms of vagus nerve demyelination (often associated with aging) include: Incontinence and frequent urination Nocturnal enuresis with disrupted sleep Constipation Chronic nausea Indigestion and leaky gut syndrome Irregular heart rate Gagging and problems swallowing Loss of hearing and taste

GROW YOUR

The success of natural treatments for re-myelination of the nerves depends on how long the nerves have been damaged and the ability to reduce triggers that caused the demyelination. Improving digestion and absorption of nutrients along with optimizing natural progesterone1 and testosterone2 levels are essential for nerve health. Acupuncture and nutritional supplements can also be of value. Acupuncture generates adult stem cells and can help the nerves repair quickly. Key nutritional supplements include digestive enzymes, vitamin D3, L-theanine, fish oil, Neurotrophin PMG from Standard Process, ATP Fuel from Researched Nutritionals, and high quality vitamin and mineral supplements. Young Living Essential Oils are 100% pure therapeutic grade and can be easily applied topically to the affected area. Body-Feedback testing methods based on Japanese acupuncture diagnosing methods can help determine which of the essential oils will work best. Essential oils can be used to reduce inflammation, improve natural hormone levels and re-myelinate the nerves. A practitioner who knows these testing methods will work with clients to choose the best oils. Reducing common issues associated with aging and nerve degeneration requires long-term commitments to wellness. Working with qualified acupuncturists and holistic healthcare providers for regular treatments is best. Many people can reduce their symptoms significantly if not entirely with holistic methods. Having a team of health care providers that specialize in neuropathy is the key to success.

The Electromagnetic Field Balancing Technique

By Teresa Martens

The key to freedom is to be fully present in your body. Peggy Phoenix Dubro The Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Balancing Technique was developed by Peggy Phoenix Dubro as an energy method to unite each individuals energy anatomy (the energy that is not physically visible, but that is essential to human life) to their personal connection to the unlimited source of energy known as the universal or cosmic lattice. Dubro refers to ones energy anatomy as the Universal Calibration Lattice (UCL) radiating from the core of ones being; a unique geometric and harmonic configuration of light and sound. This system in your energy anatomy is an extension of your sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system, which assist you in the development of your ability to fully express yourself.

The EMF Balancing Technique creates balance so that you can begin to receive and use more of the creative energy of the universe in order to co-create what you desire in your life
The cosmic lattice is everywhere and is in everything. Everything you see and everything you cannot see exists within the lattice. From Aristotles philosophy in metaphysics to the electron haze in quantum physics, the cosmic lattice is present. It is the energy of love. It is the energy of spirit. It is the energy of the universe. The EMF Balancing Technique creates balance and encourages the complete formation of the UCL (your energy anatomy) so that you can begin to receive and use more of the creative energy of the universe in order to co-create what you desire in your life: health, abundance, joy, fulfillment and peace. The UCL is the circuitry for the electrical charge that serves as the foundation for the next level of your personal evolution. The EMF Balancing Technique consists of thirteen phases. Each is different, but all are very structured in their delivery. Practitioners are taught very specific hand movements and energy clearing and balancing techniques. All practitioners work from a script to ensure that no matter where you go, the energy generated by the words, as said aloud by the practitioner, is the same, even if its spoken in a different language. Of the thirteen phases, I am certified, at present, to perform the first four:

Exercise benets the brain, too

egular exercise can benefit the body in many ways, helping men and women maintain healthier weights and lower their risks for developing potentially deadly diseases. Though many people are quick to associate exercise with its physical benefits, those hours spent on the treadmill also can boost brain power. According to Dr. Barry Gordon, professor of neurology and cognitive science at Johns Hopkins Medical Institutions and coauthor of Intelligent Memory: Improve the Memory That Makes You Smarter, exercise has a direct impact on the brain. Thats because exercise works directly on brain tissue, improving the connections between nerve cells, creating new synapses, growing new neurons and blood vessels, and improving cell energy efficiency. So while many people may begin an exercise regimen with a goal of trimming their waistlines or toning their bodies, they might be happy to know that those physical benefits are accompanied by several cognitive benefits as well. As the American Psychological Association acknowledges, the connection between exercise and mentalhealthis hard to ignore, and the APA notes that the following are just a few of the mental benefits men and women might reap from regular exercise.

that examined the effects of exercise on mental health, Boston University professor of psychology Michael Otto and his colleagues found that exercise could be a powerful tool when treating clinical depression, and even recommended clinicians include exercise as part of their treatment plans for depressed patients.

Antidote to anxiety

Improved mood

Many people feel great after exercising, especially if that exercise comes at the end of a particularly stressful day. However, those extra laps on the track or those hours spent on the treadmill dont just pay short-term dividends. In a controlled trial overseen by Duke University researcher and clinical psychologist James Blumenthal, sedentary adults with major depressive disorder were assigned into one of four groups: supervised exercise, home-based exercise, antidepressant therapy or a placebo pill. Those in the exercise and antidepressant groups had higher rates of remission than those in the placebo group, and Blumenthal concluded that exercise was generally comparable to antidepressants for men and women with major depressive disorder. In addition, in following up with patients a year later, Blumenthal found that those who continued to exercise had lower depression scores than those participants who were less active. Blumenthals study was not the only one to conclude that exercise can have a positive impact on mood. In a review of 11 studies

Some researchers, Otto included, have begun to examine the effects of exercise on treating and possibly preventing anxiety. The bodys nervous system responds quickly when people feel frightened or threatened, often causing the bodys heart rate to increase and sweating and dizziness to occur. Those people who are especially sensitive to anxiety respond to these feelings with fear, and that makes them more likely to develop panic disorders. But Otto and fellow researcher Jasper Smits of the Anxiety Research and Treatment Program at Southern Methodist University studied the effects that regular workouts might have on people prone to anxiety. Since exercise produces many of the same physical reactions, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, the body produces when responding to fear or threats, Otto and Smits wanted to determine if exercise might help people prone to anxiety become less likely to panic when experiencing fear or threats. In studying 60 participants with heightened sensitivity to anxiety, Otto and Smits found that the subjects who participated in a two-week exercise program exhibited marked improvements in anxiety sensitivity compared to those participants who did not take part in the exercise program. Otto and Smith concluded that this improvement was a result of the exercise group participants learning to associate the symptoms common to both fear and exercise, such as sweating and an elevated heart rate, with something positive (exercise) instead of something negative (anxiety). Regular exercise benefits the human body in numerous ways, not the least of which is its impact on the brain. Grassfed beef the avor is in the fat

By Gregory Stroncek and Lea Dolan-Stroncek
ur ancestors have survived and flourished on grassfed beef from time immemorial. Long before humans arrived on the scene, cattle were among the grazing species that already roamed the savannah in vast herds. The remarkable ability of cattle to convert grass to meat, fat and milk; and their predictable nature compelled ancient people to choose cattle as an ideal species for domestication. It was 5.3 million years ago that the first wild ancestors of cattle, sheep and bison evolved on the great grasslands of the world.1 In the last 11,000 years, cattle were domesticated. Cattle are among the ruminants, which are plant-eating mammals that have evolved a highly complex three or four stomachs, enabling them to efficiently digest large amounts of grass, forage or other cellulose-rich plant materials that we, as humans, cannot digest.2 Up until the late 1940s, cattle were traditionally pasture-raised without using any grain due to the intensive labor requirements grain-feeding involved. Today, intensive factory farming systems dominate domestic US beef production. Most US beef production results from intensive farming systems called Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs). Since these feeding operations have no access to pasture, the animals are fed an intensive grain-based diet along with antibiotics and hormones designed to maximize weight gain.2 According to the Grassfed Primer published by Animal Welfare Approved, these high grain diets lead to a high level of fat in meat. The USDA grading system clearly favors beef from the intensive grain-fed systems over grass-fed. The meat is graded on its marbling or intramuscular fat. Cuts of meat are awarded the highest grades that have the most fat, meaning the grading system favors beef animals that are fed high levels of grain or corn not the leaner grassfed beef.2 To date, there is no grading system that exists for grassfed beef. Grassfed beef does marble, but this intramuscular fat tends to be one of the later fat deposits laid down as the animal reaches mature body size.3 This maturity will take at least 24 months for a grassfed animal. Marbling above five percent is rare in a grassfed animal. More commonly, it is three to four percent, and is yellow in

color due to the greater amounts of beta-carotene in the animals diet.4 We know that the fat from grain-fed beef is much higher in omega 6 fatty acids a type of fatty acid that has been shown to promote obesity and heart disease when eaten in excess.2 Grassfed beef is affected by the animals all-grass-and-forage diet. This diet results in the production of more omega 3 fatty acids, CLAs, and vitamins A and E than in grain-fed beef, thus affecting the flavor, aroma and biochemistry of the beef. However, there is no evidence that diet has any effect on protein composition.4 The aroma and flavor of beef are directly linked to the chemical makeup of the final product. Grassfed beef has more diterpenoids, derivatives of chlorophyll, that change the smell and flavor to what has been described as a green flavor that consumers can taste and even smell as their steaks cook on the grill. Grain-fed beef, on the other hand, has octanal formed from linoleic acid found in grain, resulting in a soapy aroma.5 Grassfed beef cattle have less total fat, but more omega 3 fatty acids, CLA and vitamins A and D (as we stated in last months article), resulting in a dining experience that humans have known throughout history. The aroma and flavor are different, but the meat smells and tastes like beef should. It is only recently that we have tinkered with this highly successful formula of feeding cattle what they naturally eat, switching to confinement grain systems at the risk of our health.

Once the first four phases are complete, a client may choose to repeat any of the four phases individually, or in combinations, depending on what they may be experiencing in their life. Some clients choose to repeat Phase II to clear up more of their history and allow that energy to come forth into the present moment for an even greater experience of being in the now. While the method and energy pattern of each phase is followed in sequence, the calibration is always in accordance with each persons innate wisdom. Everyone is different and will have their own unique and individual experiences. For more information on the EMF Balancing Technique, visit www.efmworldwide.com.

Making the most of each moment

A peek behind the motivations of gestational surrogates
By Christie Olsen, MSN, APNP

f you think about it, each moment truly is a moment of infinite possibility, whether the moment is tiny, or it is a moment that coalesces together with other moments to decide which path we take in life. New Years is a time to consider your plans for the upcoming moments of 2014. Many people focus on improving their health. Some dive into improving relationships. Both of these areas have rich rewards when the goals are accomplished, and both areas can be difficult to traverse at times.
WHO IS AN IDEAL CANDIDATE FOR GESTATIONAL SURROGACY?

A select handful of people across Wisconsin and the US are taking on the ultimate challenge of physical wellness and relationship-building this year. They hope to be part of a team coming together to create a baby via surrogacy. Most people can understand the desire for children. In fact, according to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) one percent of all children born in 2011 were conceived via In Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and thousands of adoptions occur each year. However, it can be harder to grasp the rationale behind

a woman sharing her body to help others achieve the dream of parenthood. Why would a woman carry a pregnancy for someone else? When talking about surrogacy, this is probably one of the most common questions asked. The answer always involves describing amazing women who exist in our communities. While the motivations for women and their partners are often multifaceted and personal, at least one, if not all three, of the following components are present.
I LOVED BEING PREGNANT OR BEING A PARENT. I always felt the healthiest

Age 21-45 Healthy living habits & weight At least one previous pregnancy & experience raising that child Loved being pregnant Not receiving public assistance Emotionally and nancially stable

and best during my pregnancies. I simply cannot imagine my life without my children. They are the best thing I ever did. These are common answers to the question, Why did you chose to become a surrogate? These women had easy pregnancies and absolutely cherish their children. Many of them reflect on how much they would want someone to step up if they needed help having children and cite that as a reason to help others. Surrogates have the imagination to picture themselves as the parents-tobe and know they would want help, too.

Do you think like a winner?

By Dr. Joanne Flanagan

lmost everything you read concerning health and fitness mentions the importance of positive thinking to achieve success. Many people attribute their gains to lack of negative thoughts and envisioning their results. I believe ones mental attitude and thoughts are what determine the difference between winning and losing. Exactly how important are your thoughts? The answer to this question may seem obvious to most of us, but the effects of negative thoughts may not be so apparent. They are like extra pounds of fat that we are carrying around which can be taxing on us both physically and mentally. Energy follows thought. Every achievement you experience began as a single thought consisting of a few micro milliwatts of energy flowing through your brain. That thought was followed by millions more. Clocked at 1,200 words per minute, thoughts have a tremendous impact on the mind, emotions and body. When negative thoughts arise (which the body perceives as a threat), an automatic physiological response is triggered called the fight or flight mechanism. The body reacts as if there is a danger or a threat and prepares to either take action toward the threat (fight) or flee for its life (flight). This

was a valuable human response if you were in real serious danger, but it is counterproductive in our daily activities. The repeated and unnecessary triggering of this response causes the body to produce emergency chemicals (which includes the flow of adrenaline), and if unused, these

chemicals eventually begin breaking down into other more toxic substances. The body must then mobilize yet again to get rid of the poisons, which creates enormous physiological stress. As you can see, this downward mind/body spiral can continue

Five reasons women should strength train

By Jade Bunk

trength training is not just for men. Women can and should get just as many (if not more!) benefits from strength training. For most women though, there are a few unnecessary fears surrounding strength training, such as the fear of bulking up or gaining too much muscle.

This is more of a myth than a reality. Women just dont have the testosterone levels to gain a large amount of muscle. When women strength train, their muscles tend to get more dense and defined, leading to that sleek, toned look. To quote Alexander J. Koch, PhD, CSCS, program coordinator for exercise science at Lenoir-Rhyne University,

The fear that one will accidentally grow large amounts of muscle from lifting weights is akin to fearing you will be involuntarily drafted by the WNBA if you shoot a few hoops at the Y. It just doesnt happen. The following are just some of the reasons for incorporating regular strength training sessions into your workouts: 1. FAT LOSS: Building muscle = higher metabolism = burning more calories at rest. Sure you might burn more calories during a high-paced cardiovascular workout than a strength training session at the gym, but studies have shown that when strength training as opposed to cardiovascular conditioning is done, you continue to burn calories after leaving the gym. This adds up over time, and puts you in a position to burn more calories consistently. Youll thereby drop fat, instead of lean, sexy, functional muscle tissue. 2. CONFIDENCE: This may be one of the lesser discussed aspects of strength training, but is one of the most powerful. A strong lady is a confident lady. It is profound how as physical strength develops, mental strength and fortitude develop as well. From self-esteem to self-defense, a little strength can go a long way. Strength is empowering.

This doesnt have to mean hoisting a giant barbell above your head, but as you become stronger, youll notice how things get easier, such as carrying heavy groceries, opening a jar, or moving furniture. And youll notice the confidence boost that comes along with it as you realize you can do more than you could before. 3. HEALTH: Studies have shown that strength training can and does lower your risk of diabetes and heart disease, and lowers blood pressure. Strength training is also a surefire way to build bone density, and can help counteract age-related bone loss, especially in seniors. Strength training also improves balance and coordination, and lowers your risk of injury. You may or may not be concerned with these topics yet, but prevention is the best medicine. If you start (or continue) a quality strength training program, youll be glad you did in the future. And its never too late to start. 4. FUN: This might be debatable, but if you ask me, a quality, challenging strength training program is a lot more fun than tons of hours spent on a treadmill. Its fun to lift heavy things and learn new skills. Its fun to watch your progress as you find yourself able to lift weights you couldnt a few weeks ago. Add to that an increased metabolism, which is accompanied by the ability to eat more tasty food and indulge every once in a while without having to worry about gaining weight. Strength training does not have to take place only in the free weight section of the local gym, either. There are lots of fun, strength-oriented classes and programs available these days, and you can even get a great strength training session in in your own home, with no equipment but your own body. So if youre thinking about starting a new exercise program, or are ready to incorporate some new activity, try lifting something heavy, and see what strength training can do for you!

family to form as simply one more opportunity to help others. These women often view surrogacy as though it were a gift for themselves, or they describe the honor and pride they feel as a surrogate.
I HAVE A PERSONAL CONNECTION WITH FERTILITY TREATMENTS.

Knowing someone who has experienced fertility treatments can spark a woman to consider surrogacy to help others going through fertility treatments. A woman who personally had fertility issues in the past can even become a surrogate, if her general health or uterus were not the causes for the infertility. The gestational surrogates ability to understand the intense desire for a successful outcome and her empathy for hopeful parents experiencing the heavy disappointment of getting pregnancy tests back negative is invaluable as she helps another couple along their journey to parenthood. And as more couples talk openly about their fertility treatments, it helps others to understand the process.

to form. When questioned, Wont it be hard to give away the baby? a gestational surrogate often replies with, The baby was never mine to give away. She understands her critical role in bringing the baby into the world, but acknowledges she is not the guardian or mother. The legal contract created at the beginning of the process very clearly outlines this distinction. Many parents-to-be and gestational surrogates ultimately do form close and special relationships over time; however, at the outset, all parties agree to work together with the expectation that the gestational surrogate will not be a motherly figure. Clearly, it takes a special woman to become a gestational surrogate, a woman who is emotionally stable; a woman with an interest in helping others; a woman with a history of easy pregnancies. May each of the moments in 2014 bring health, wellness and success to the people connecting through surrogacy across the US this year.

O YOU THINK LIKE A WINNER? D continued from page 53

Self-tormenting internal dialogue:

almost indefinitely. When it has gone on for a while, we call it depression. Life is stressful enough, so who needs the extra weight of a negative thought? Through our many experiments, we have found that when a person is having a negative thought, they can hold on to an Equilibrex Pendent, and the effects of that thought will lessen. The energy balance of the body regains equilibrium.

Causes of negative feelings:

Intimidation: Dont be concerned

with others. Focus only on yourself and your goals. Thinking and feeling positively about your aims and success will help. Being overly sensitive: Develop emotional resilience, and dont let outside stimuli get you down. Preoccupation with personal hostilities: See things as enjoyable challenges. If anger arises, refocus your attention on the purpose of what you are doing. This is also a good time to hold on to an Equilibrex Pendent. Lack of control: Observe negative thoughts as they happen, the incident that triggered them and how you reacted. Take deep breaths and visualize the thoughts leaving your mind.

Feelings of unworthiness result from thoughts such as Im not good enough, or I cant do it, so why even try. Stop the self-doubts. Unrealistic expectations: There are no magic pills or potions. Your goals may take a certain amount of time depending on individual factors. Mental poisoning: Negative comments, complaining, visual suggestions and gossip may negatively influence thoughts just by being in close proximity to this behavior. Negative thoughts create negative people, which can hurt themselves and others.

Visualize and feel that you are already there. Install motivation. Have self-condence. Believe in yourself. Avoid emotionally toxic people and situations. Replace negative thoughts with positive ones. Accept things for the way they are. Acceptance is not the same as liking, being happy about or even condoning a situation. It is seeing something the way it is. Everything necessary to achieve positive thoughts is within us. Negative thinking is the only thing that can obstruct your goals. Your thoughts create your reality. Motivation, drive and powerful positive thoughts will transform your life from mediocrity to excellence.
Dr. Joanne Flanagan is a world renowned expert in stress-handling technology, which includes physical, mental, emotional and environmental stressors. She has worked diligently in the past ten years in determining the nature of hidden stresses that destroy vitality. The result is her invention of the Equilibrex Pendant, which lessens the effects of stress on the bio-energy field surrounding the human body. For more information and research on stress and how to protect yourself from stress-related illnesses, see Dr. Flanagans website at www.equilibrex.com.

How to eliminate negative thoughts:

yourself realistically.

Recognize your potential. Assess Dene your purpose. Set your goals. Establish short-

term goals that are easily attainable and commensurate with your abilities. Approach goals realistically. Begin slowly, and as each goal is reached, make others until you attain your ultimate desired result. Goals shape what you become. Establish a definite time frame during which you intend to reach each goal. Discipline yourself. Think and feel positive about your aims and success.

Jane nds her center through reiki

while ago I was picking up my son and his friend from school. As we were driving, I told the two boys that I was about to have a reiki session. Whats reiki? the friend asked. My son immediately jumped in. He grabbed his friends hand and, without actually touching it, placed one of his own hands on top and the other below. Then he said, Feel that? Thats reiki. Now, I had never explained anything to my son about reiki or energy healing before. He had somehow known, perhaps intuitively, what it was. Mysterious, right? Thats reiki. Reiki, for those who didnt totally follow my sons explanation, is a Japanese method of relaxation and stress reduction that promotes healing. Its based on the idea that we are all powered by a life force energy, and that low levels of this energy can make us unwell. Through a laying on of hands by trained practitioners, life force energy can be restored, promoting wellness on physical, mental, emotional and spiritual levels. After hearing some time ago about the powerful healing that reiki can facilitate, I decided to try it for myself. I scheduled a session with Teresa Martens of Loving Heart Reiki. If I had felt skeptical about the practice in any way before, it was all washed away upon entering the Loving Heart Reiki studio. I could immediately feel a shift in the energy field. This feeling intensified as I passed into the treatment room, which was warm and dimly lit, with soft music playing. I was surrounded by pictures of various teachers and healers from throughout history. Beautiful crystals, which Im told have energy-delivering properties themselves, were placed around the room to great effect. I could sense I was in for a deeply spiritual experience. To start the treatment, Teresa walked me through a grounding meditation. The soft, gentle quality of her voice and the soothing energy of the room seemed to combine into a calming force, and before I knew it, I had slipped into a state of presence. With great clarity, I became aware of everything in my environment, outside and within.
Natures Pathways | January 2014

Teresa then led me to a comfortable table where I lay face up, fully clothed. From there, the reiki treatment began. With the placement of Teresas hands, I could feel a ripple in my own energy levels. Almost immediately, I was lulled into a state of deep relaxation where time and space did not seem to matter. I was actually already familiar with this state of blissful presence, having previously done some meditation on my own. Unfortunately, my past experiences of this state were always fleeting. I would feel myself achieving it, then think, Wow, Im meditating! And then it would vanish. While Teresa preformed reiki on me, however, I was able to enter this state, go deeper into it and stay in it for longer than I ever had before. It was as though I were a feather and Teresa were the breeze, holding me up in the air. When she gently asked me to come down from the table, I arose with a deep sense of calm. I felt centered. The experience seemed to put me into balance with myself, and myself with my surroundings. I felt like I had had something lifted from me, as though I were a little lighter and my steps a bit softer. To dispel the sensation of levitating, Teresa grounded me once more, and the session was over. I left Loving Heart that day feeling what so many of us long to feel: joy and inner peace. I knew right away after that first time that it wouldnt be my last. Having felt such incredibly powerful feelings, I just had to experience them again! Fortunately for me, Teresa Martens is a reiki master teacher, so not only does she perform reiki, she teaches it to others as well. Thus far, I have undergone training for reiki Levels I and II. Ive learned how to ground myself, to protect myself, to perform reiki on others and to self-reiki. Ive learned to tap into my own intuition in the soothing and healing process anyone with an open heart and an open mind can learn!

New Years resolutions for your pet!

By Gabby Myers
e make resolutions for ourselves, but what about our family pet that we love and adore? They need resolutions for better health, too! Resolve to help your pet eat better, exercise and spend more time with friends! These seven resolutions take into account all aspects of your pets mind, body and soul to create a holistically happy animal for the next year.

you do not include raw food in your dogs daily diet. Kibble is baked at such a high temperature that most of the nutrients are baked out of it! Pet food companies add them back in, but it can be in the form of laboratory-derived powder, rather than in naturally-occurring ingredients. 1. Visit your veterinarian

What better way to put goals in place than with a health check-up by your veterinarian. Holistic vets and those who study alternative medicines tend to be your best advisors when it comes to feeding pets a healthier and fresher diet. Visiting your veterinarian at the beginning of the year will help you establish health goals for your pet and set a great annual benchmark against which to measure successes!

2. Dont forget the dentist

PET SUPPLIES AND HOLISTIC SERVICES

Your vet can clean your dog or cats teeth much as a dentist does. However, to do this, pets have to be sedated, which is always a risk and strain on the body. If you catch the tartar buildup early, you can seek out an experienced groomer to do a scaling to avoid a vet trip. Better yet, start brushing your pets teeth with an enzymatic toothpaste after you brush your own to stave off dental disease.

You are what you eat. Its absolutely true. Dogs and certainly cats are designed to eat meat, so why not feed them meat? Raw formulas are the most biologically appropriate food a dog or cat can eat. Their digestive system was built to process raw meat, as it provides for quicker absorption through their short digestive tracts. Watch as your fussy tabby gobbles up meals and Fidos coat gets shinier. A fresh, varied diet boosts immune systems and is significantly linked to pets longevity.

You look as good as you eat

By Brittany Miller

f you want to look more attractive, eat more fruits and veggies. You read that right: the food you eat can actually change how attractive you are perceived by others. This comes from a new study by researchers at the University of St. Andrews investigating the impact of fruit and vegetable intake on skin yellowness and redness (known indicators of health and attractiveness). The study found that increasing fruit and vegetable intake by only about three servings per day resulted in significant changes in the skin

ge

color of Caucasian peoples skin in just six weeks. Their skin color didnt just change, however; it was perceived to be more attractive and healthier. That healthy glow is thought to be attributable to the fruit and vegetables carotenoids, such as lycopene and beta-carotene. Carotenoids are the phytochemicals that give fruits and veggies, such as sweet potatoes, tomatoes and watermelons, their yellow, orange and red pigments. Not only do carotenoids have powerful antioxidant properties, they are thought to reduce the risk of heart disease and certain cancers. But how do these disease-fighting carotenoids work their magic on your skin? They are thought to improve blood perfusion to the skin by increasing artery elasticity. Their antioxidant properties fight against premature aging and disease by reducing oxidative damage on a cellular level. Additionally, carotenoids are important for immune health and may prevent age-related macular degeneration.

How you can reap the most benets

Carotenoids are fat-soluble, meaning their absorption is greatest when eaten with a little fat. High heat, prolonged cooking, microwaving and deep-frying significantly decrease a foods carotenoid content. An exception is the lycopene in tomatoes, which is significantly increased after cooking. A perfect meal that is rich in carotenoids would be a big salad with leafy greens and a little olive oil with a warm cup of tomato soup.

Supplements of different carotenoids do not impart the same health benefits as those found naturally in whole foods. In fact, some studies show that large doses of beta-carotene supplements actually increased the risk of lung cancer. Moral of the story: its always better to get your nutrition from food, not supplements. No need to go out and eat ten pounds of carrots, which you may already know will turn your skin orange. Instead, focus on increasing your fruit and vegetable intake every day. Add sliced tomato to your grilled cheese, replace one meal a day with a big salad or make a green fruit smoothie for breakfast. If you increase your fruits and veggies, you will not only be doing your body a great deal of good on the inside, but youll have the added benefit of looking better too!

In addition to individual reiki sessions and classes, Teresa also offers something called a reiki share, which I also attended. This is a kind of group session in which individuals trained in reiki Level I and higher can perform their techniques on one another at the same time. Having so many likeminded individuals all together in one place and with a common purpose is a beautiful experience. The universal energy in these sessions is palpable. Since my first visit to Loving Heart, reiki has brought much healing into my life. When Im feeling stressed, angry or uptight, or when Im just not feeling my best, I turn reiki on to feel the powerful healing energy of the universe flow through me. When strangers are unkind to me, when my son is acting up, when people at my work are bombarding me with negativity, I turn reiki on and send it to them with the hopes that healing will occur. If you long to feel peace, balance and an overall sense of wellbeing if you have felt those things before, but seem to have forgotten how to unlock them within yourself, then visit Teresa Martens at Loving Heart Reiki. Turn reiki on, and feel the healing power of the universe! Loving Heart Reiki offers private sessions and classes in a peaceful and loving environment. ears ago people who were chronically ill went to health resorts. They would stay for weeks, even months to rest, sleep, hydrate, sunbathe and exercise. This was the natural way to cure yourself. They would be fed healthy foods and just relax. I think a number of people would benefit from that today. One big problem today is sleep debt. Recently at the Annual Symposium of the American Herbalists Guild, Paul Bergner, who runs the North American Institute of Medical Herbalism, shared these statistics. In 1900, the average person in the US got nine hours of sleep every night. By 1963, we were only getting eight and a half hours of sleep. In 2002, the average person was only getting about six hours of sleep each week night and eight hours per night on weekends, thus averaging about seven hours per night.1 The body needs eight and a half to nine hours of sleep each night to stay healthy. Just one hour below that each night can build up what is called sleep debt. The average American then is suffering a sleep debt of one and a half to two hours a night. When this happens night after night, it can greatly affect your health. Sleep debt makes you vulnerable to catching colds or the flu. In fact, sleep debt can actually cause flu-like symptoms but without any infection! It also impairs mental function, causes anxiety and/or depression, increases cortisol levels and increases insulin resistance. Sleep debt can make you more prone to heart disease and stroke. Lack of sleep makes it harder to concentrate and affects your mood. People who are sleep-deprived become more accidentprone. About 100,000 auto accidents are due to sleep deprivation every year, resulting in 1500 deaths and $12.5 billion in damages.2
www.naturespathways.com

If you are having problems falling asleep or sleeping through the night, here are some factors possibly contributing to your problem: poor nutrition, a sedentary lifestyle, artificial lighting, the overuse of stimulants (such as caffeine), stress, anxiety and dehydration. (Hmm weve talked about this last one in these pages before.) So take a look at your lifestyle and try to determine what you can do to get a good nights sleep! Hint: Sleeping pills are not the answer. If youre not getting a full nights sleep, the following are some suggestions to help you. Set a bedtime and stick to it. Try to get some bright sunlight between 7 and 9 a.m. This can establish the bodys cycle of light and dark. The best sleep starts prior to midnight. Watch what you eat! Monitor your intake of dairy, wheat, corn and chocolate. Your problem could be food intolerance. Exercise can put you on the path to a better nights sleep. In a study of 50 men and women over age 67, half performed 45 minutes of aerobic exercise at least three time a week, while the other half did only stretching exercises three times a week. After six months, those in the aerobic group were getting 33 percent more sleep than before. They were also secreting 30 percent more human growth hormone than before the study. Human growth hormone spurs cell division and organ growth, and has an overall rejuvenating effect. Not one person in the stretching group showed any change at all. Tips for getting a better nights sleep might also include relaxing a couple of hours prior to going to bed. Also, make sure the bedroom is dark and that you are at least three feet away from any electronics TVs, VCRs, electric clocks, radios, cell phones, iPads you get the picture. Make sure you are properly hydrated. However, if you have a problem getting up to urinate, drink more water during the day rather than at night. Avoid caffeine at least three hours prior to bedtime. Also avoid spicy foods and snacking prior to bedtime. Your sugar levels can wake you up and make it hard to get back to sleep. Finally, stress can be a huge factor in not getting a good nights sleep. Taking vitamin C and B-complex vitamins along with magnesium during the day makes a big difference in getting a good nights rest. Herbal remedies might include Nutri-Calm or Herbal Sleep, which contain three sleep-inducing herbs: hops, valerian and passion flower. Another good herbal product is kava kava, for those who have a lot of muscle tension. Sleep well!

food daily for an omega-3 supplement. Sprinkle some kelp in for high fiber, antioxidants, anti-inflammatory agents, anticancer properties and over 60 natural vitamins and minerals.

5. Look your best

After nourishing your pets body, theyll want to strut their stuff and look their best! Grooming is an important aspect of pet care and is about so much more than appearance. Breeds with long hair can get tangles or mats in their hair and, if not brushed out, they get tight and pull on your pets skin. This can even form sores. The only way to get rid of them is with a haircut. Let a groomer handle the clippers and give your pet a spa day. Dogs with allergies can benefit from specialty shampoos that soothe and heal hotspots. Coat conditioners can keep the seasons dry skin healthy.

6. Work out

I wouldnt be surprised if getting into shape were on your resolutions list, but it should be on Fidos, too. Obesity is an increasing concern for our pets as well as ourselves. They can suffer the same obesity-related diseases as humans, including diabetes, asthma and heart disease. While youre at the office, let your dog work out by going to doggie daycare. Your pup will find plenty of canine and human attention there, guaranteed to exhaust them, hopefully into the next day.

7. Keep your mind challenged

Mental exercise is as important as physical. Of course your dog doesnt do Sudoku while youre out, but you can keep them stimulated with a puzzle toy they have to manipulate to get treats out! There are rolling treat balls in a variety of shapes cube, molecule, oyster some with ways to change the difficulty of getting to those tasty morsels. If your dog is an Einstein, there are even more complicated contraptions. Dont let kitty miss out put their kibble in a treat ball and make them hunt for it. They get exercise and excitement without the extra calories.

t Integrative Dental Solutions (IDS), Dr. Ingo Mahn and Dr. Supriya Shetty have created one of the most unique dental practices in the country. Based on an understanding of the relationship between oral and physical health, they combine holistic methods and materials that are beneficial to the overall health of their patients with todays most advanced technologies. The biggest difference between conventional dentistry and holistic dentistry is being aware of how the health of the mouth affects overall health, says Dr. Mahn. An infection in your mouth has the potential to cause disease in another part of the body. Until recent research established a link between gum disease and heart disease, conventional dentistry had refuted that possibility. Dr. Mahn says he began his path toward more natural dentistry more than 10 years ago. At the time, he was doing a significant amount of cosmetic dentistry because he found mercury amalgam (silver) fillings to be unattractive as well as damaging to teeth. As time went on, he developed a reputation among patients looking for a more natural approach. These patients would often visit his office armed with pamphlets conveying the dangers of these mercury-based amalgam fillings. He says many people may suffer for years with unexplained chronic symptoms; unaware that those symptoms could be a result of toxic metals or infection in the mouth. In the search for optimal health, oral infections and toxic heavy metals are often left untreated, despite the adverse effects these conditions can present, he explains. In fact, research indicates that exposure to dental mercury can be a serious health hazard, as mercury is released from these

mercury-based dental fillings constantly. This can lead to a slow buildup of mercury in ones organs, tissues and cells, especially if the patient is unable to properly excrete these toxins. Even shortterm exposure to small amounts of mercury can cause symptoms such as fatigue, irritability and memory loss. Amalgams can be removed, but it is critical that it be done safely, as the vapors and particles can enter the body if not done properly. Dr. Mahn and Dr. Shetty use the most advanced amalgam removal protocols to eliminate the old, mercurybased materials safely and painlessly, and replace them with a biocompatible composite white filling material an important part of the process. People are often surprised how much better they feel after these fillings are removed, says Dr. Shetty. Sometimes its gradual and sometimes it is dramatic. She warns that people shouldnt assume that white fillings are a healthier alternative. Many composites contain toxic additives and filler materials. Integrative Dental Solutions offers several options for testing the biocompatibility of dental materials, including energetic testing by an on-site naturopath. Integrative Dental Solutions is unique in that it combines holistic dentistry with the very latest in dental technology, including: CAD/CAM technology that allows the doctors to make long-lasting non-metallic restorations in a single visit; a 3D CT and digital radiography system that reduces exposure to X-rays by up to 90 percent; and drill-less dentistry or air abrasion that prepares teeth using a stream of air and particles. They also offer non-surgical gum therapy using lasers and ozone, as even oral surgery is performed using holistic techniques all in an effort to do what is best for the patient.
www.naturespathways.com

Dr. Mahn says it is important that patients and other health care practitioners consider Integrative Dental Solutions part of their integrative health care team. He is so passionate about integrative care that in 2004 he earned a doctorate degree from Capital University of Integrative Medicine in Washington, D.C. I have no desire to practice integrative medicine, but the knowledge I gained has allowed me to better understand my patients and communicate with other health care practitioners. My patients are to trust me with their health; I owe it to them to be as informed as possible. Both doctors consider education a crucial aspect of their practice both for themselves and their patients. Each attends continuing education courses on a regular basis to stay up-to-date on the latest technologies and procedures. When a patient comes back, shakes your hand and thanks you for improving their life, its incredibly rewarding and makes you want to try that much harder, says Dr. Shetty. If you are looking for a more natural approach for your dental health, Dr. Mahn and Dr. Shetty offer a $39 special that includes a new patient exam, X-rays and consultation. Call today!

These snacks pack an energetic punch

any adults find themselves feeling drowsy in the hours after they eat lunch. A heavy lunch, a staid office atmosphere or a combination of the two can make professionals feel sleepy as the workday winds down. Though some might opt for a second cup of coffee, the immediate energy boost provided by caffeine quickly wears off, leaving men and women feeling even more tired as a result. Oftentimes, the right mid-afternoon snack can provide the energy boosts adults need to stay productive throughout the workday. The following are a handful of healthy snacks that tend to provide a lot of energy. Greek yogurt: Greek yogurt has become increasingly popular in recent years, as more and more people are opting for this snack

thats rich in calcium, protein, phosphorous and zinc. Traditional yogurt tends to provide a quick energy boost, as it is generally easy to digest, before that boost quickly fades. Greek yogurt is thicker than traditional yogurt, so it does not digest so easily, producing more sustained energy levels as a result. However, Greek yogurt is also loaded with protein, helping men and women feel fuller longer. That can be beneficial for those who want to lose weight, as the feeling of fullness that Greek yogurt provides means those who eat it are less likely to eat more snacks throughout the day. Whole grains: Whole grain snacks are loaded with energizing ingredients, including fiber, iron, magnesium and protein. Whole wheat snacks are also loaded with B vitamins, which help people fight fatigue

and stabilize blood sugar levels. In addition, the body takes longer to absorb the complex carbohydrates found in whole wheat snacks, which means the body can maintain stable blood sugar levels for extended periods of time, and that leads to a long-lasting energy boost. White bread and simple carbohydrates provide an immediate, yet temporary, energy boost when peoples blood sugar levels spike. But once that initial energy boost subsides, men and women will be left feeling fatigued. Edamame: Many people may know edamame from recipes, but few might know edamame can be an energy-boosting snack as well. Edamame are boiled soybeans that are rich in protein, iron, omega-3 fatty acids and fiber. Each of these things helps the body sustain energy levels. In addition, edamame is also packed with a trace mineral known as molybdenum that helps cells function properly while enhancing alertness and improving concentration. Almonds: Almonds are loaded with ingredients that increase energy levels, including vitamin E, phosphorous, vitamin B2 and magnesium, which serves numerous beneficial functions, including aiding in the production of energy and relieving stress and anxiety. Because they are rich in protein and fiber, almonds take longer for the body to digest, which means energy levels will stay up for longer periods of time than they would for those snacks that are easily digested. Almonds also contain healthy fats that curb appetite, making it less likely that men and women who snack on almonds will overeat and find themselves fighting the fatigue thats often a byproduct of overeating.
