Parallel lines: on the same plane, two lines never meet
If line AB is parallel to line CD, we label AB CD.
If line l is parallel to line m, we label l m.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 2 / 22
Try and think
(1) through point C, you can draw how many lines which is parallel to line
AB
(2) through point D, draw a line which is parallel to line AB. Is this line
parallel to the line you get from (1)?
Through one point outside a line, you can get only one parallel line
If two lines are both parallel to the third line, these two lines are
parallel
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 3 / 22
intersecting lines: on the same plane, two lines have and only have
one common point
the common point P: the intersecting point
1 and 2: vertical angles
Vertical angles are equal to each other
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 4 / 22
As in the graph, 1 +3 = 180

Two angles are supplementary if the sum is

180

.
1 and 3, 1 and 4,2 and 3,2 and 4
are all supplementary.
As in the graph, 1 +2 = 90

Two angles are complementary if the sum is

90

.
1 and 2 are complementary angles.
As in the graph, if 1 = 2
The complementary(supplementary) angles of
two equal angles are equal to each other
3 +1 = 90

,4 +2 = 90

, therefore
3 = 4.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 5 / 22
1. As in the graph, line a and line b are intersecting, 1 = 42

, nd the
size of 2, 3, 4
2. and are supplementary angles, can both of them be acute
angles? right angles? obtuse angles?
3. As in the graph, 2 = 3, 2 = 58

, nd the size of 1
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 6 / 22
Vertical/Perpenticular: if the angle between two lines is 90

, then
they are vertical/perpendicular to each each
If AB is perpendicular to CD, we denote AB CD. The intersection
point O is the foot of perpendicular.
Try:draw a line which is vertical to line l from point A/C
On a plane, through one point, you can only get one vertical line to a given
line
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 7 / 22
Vertical/Perpendiculr line segment:PO
The line segment between given point and the foot of perpendicular.
Perpendicular line segment is the shortest
Among all segments connecting a outside point and a point on a line, the
perpendicular line segment is the shortest one.
As in the graph, PO is the shortest one.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 8 / 22
1. Find all pairs of perpendicular lines.
2. Through point A and B, draw perpendicular lines.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 9 / 22
corresponding angles: 1&2
alternate angles: 2&7
vertical angles: 1&7
interior angles on the same side: 2&5
If corresponding angles are equal, then these
two lines are parallel
If 1 = 2 = AB CD
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 10 / 22
1. As in the graph, if 1 = 2, are line AB and CD parallel?
2. Find all pairs of parallel lines in the gure.
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 11 / 22
If alternate angles are equal, then these two
lines are parallel
If 1 = 2 = AB CD
If interior angles on the same side are
supplementary, then these two lines are parallel
If 1 +2 = 180

= AB CD
Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 12 / 22
1. 1 and are corresponding angles;
5 and are interior angles on the
same side;
2 and are alternate angles;
2. Find the parallel lines when
(1) 1 = 4 (2) 2 = 4 (3) 1 +3 = 180

Jackie.Zhou (YWIES) Grade 6 Bilingual Math Parallel and intersecting lines 13 / 22

If two lines are parallel, then the
corresponding angles are equal
If AB CD = 1 = 2
If two lines are parallel, then alternate angles
are equal
If AB CD = 1 = 2
If two lines are parallel, then interior angles on
the same side are supplementary
If AB CD = 1 +2 = 180
