Kelsie Meland, aboard Chester, was one of 102
barrel cowgirls competing in Glasgow this past
Saturday during the Northeast Montana 4-D Barrel
Race. Also competing from Glasgow on a very windy
day were Sara Jimison and Brett See. Brought in
by the Glasgow Rodeo Association, the 4-D (four
divisions) keeps these cowgirls on the road nearly
every weekend. On Sunday they were all loaded up
and headed for Scobey for another day of jackpot
barrel racing. Speaking of the Glasgow Rodeo
Association, theyve got the arena all spruced up
specifically for the Northeast Montana Fairs Ranch
Rodeo this Saturday, August 2nd followed by the
PRCA Rodeo on Sunday and Monday evenings.

Its been a dry July, and it looks like itll stay that way
to close out the month and heading into the Northeast
Montana Fair August 2nd-5th. Weve received just 0.58
inch of precip here in Glasgow while the normal is 1.64
inches. And would you believe in 2010 we actually had
a trace of snow on July 28th? Tat day also featured
1.1.5 inches of precipitation. But as soon as they get
that Funtime Carnival all set up, that should make for a
good cloud burst.
Tere will be a fair Commission meeting tonight (July
28) at 6:00 at the culinary building located on the
Northeast Montana Fairgrounds.
Tis meeting is a last minute to do list discussion.

Fair Board meets tonight
At least nine trailered boats
checked recently at Montanas
roadside watercraf inspection
stations have been found to be
transporting live fsh, which is
illegal in Montanas Western and
Central Fishing Districts.
Watercraf inspection stations
at Coram, Ronan and Tompson
Falls in northwestern Montana; at
Wolf Creek north of Helena; and
at Hardin south of Billings have
turned up more than 58 live fsh in
water-flled tanks used on a variety
of fshing boats to keep bait and
caught fsh alive. Fish found being
transported on Montana roads in
boat live wells included yellow
perch, largemouth bass, smallmouth
bass, northern pike and walleye.
Moving live fsh from the
water in which they were caught
is illegal in most of the state and
can lead to big trouble if those fsh
are placed into other waters, said
Bruce Rich, FWPs fsheries chief
in Helena. New fsh in any river or
lake can changeand sometimes
destroyexisting fsheries because
new species may not be compatible
with the fsh already there or could
even cause major environmental
damage.
Rich said rather than illegally
transporting caught fsh from
streams and lakes in live wells,
anglers should put their catch in
coolers and place the fsh on ice to
keep them fresh on the way home.
All boats being trailered or hauled
in Montanaincluding rafs,
kayaks and canoesmust stop and
be checked at watercraf inspection
stations. Signs are posted or placed
on the highway alerting motorists
trailering boats where to pull over
ahead of time. Te inspectors
are looking for zebra and quagga
mussels and other aquatic nuisance
plants or animals that are being
transported from other states and
locales. Inspectors also check live
wells to ensure Montana laws
prohibiting the transport of live fsh
are being followed.
Te penalty for transporting
live fsh in Montana is a maximum
of $1,000, six months in jail and
forfeiture of hunting and fshing
licenses.
FWPs mandatory watercraf
inspection stations are located at
18 strategic highway locations and
boat ramps in Montana. Crews
typically inspect more than 30,000
boatsabout 4,000 from out-of-
statefrom mid-May to Labor Day.
Crews regularly fnd vegetation
on boats and trailers, including
numerous cases of Eurasian
watermilfoil and other problem-
causing plants over the course of
a season. Crews also ofen fnd
standing water in boats, which can
harbor aquatic invasive species,
particularly in the bilge area and in
live wells.
A bright spot in the inspection
efort, however, also shows that
crews are reporting that more boat

owners are becoming familiar with FWPs
Inspect-Clean-Dry education campaign.
As a result, more boats are showing up at
inspection stations with boat plugs out and
live wells drained.
Our best defense against invasive
species is to inspect, clean, and dry boats,
trailers, and fshing gear afer each use,
Rich said. If all boaters and anglers get into
the Inspect, Clean and Dry habit, theyll
help to reduce unintentional introductions
of harmful species into Montanas streams
and lakes.
Boat owners said that their recent
eforts to help stop the spread of unwanted
aquatic invasive species are a direct
response to information received from
previous inspections on the importance of
having a drained and dry boat.
For more information about Montana
fshing regulations and Montanas fshing
districts pick up a copy of Montanas Fishing
Regulations at any FWP ofce and from
most license providers. For information on
aquatic invasive species, visit FWPs website
at fwp.mt.gov; then click Stop the Spread.
Anglers need to be aware of
the laws regarding the transport
of live fsh, which varies by
fshing district.
In the Western District
west of the Continental
Dividetransport of any live
fsh is illegal.
In the Central Fishing
Districtthe central third
of Montanalive bait fsh,
which includes many but
not all nongame fsh, may be
transported live to and from
a select list of waters where
the use of live bait is allowed.
Te live transport of angler-
caught fsh is illegal within
the Central District and on
the roads that constitute the
boundary between the Central
and Eastern Fishing Districts.
In the Eastern Fishing
Districtthe eastern third of
Montanathe transport of
live bait fsh is allowed. Unique
to the Eastern District is the
part of the law which permits
the transport of live game fsh
that have been legally caught,
anywhere within the boundaries
of the district, but not on the
roadways that separate the
Eastern and Central Districts.
Rather than illegally
transporting caught fsh in live
wells, FWP urges anglers to
store their catch in coolers and
place the fsh on ice to keep
them fresh on the way home.
Te penalty for illegally
transporting live fsh in
Montana is a maximum of
$1,000, six months in jail time
and forfeiture of hunting and
fshing licenses.

Everyone taking in the

knew there would be a couple of
quality ball teams not making it to
the State Tournament in Lewistown.
Unfortunately for Reds fans,
Glasgow was one of em.
Afer a stellar season and
headed into District as the #1 seed,

Friday in semifnal action. Glasgow
outhit the Dodgers 11-10, but simply
stranded too many base runners.
Te Reds would then face
the Billings Blue Jays on Saturday
morning only to get knocked out
of the tournament, falling 10-1.
Glasgows lone run came in the 5th
inning on a sacrifce fy.
Laurel would then defeat the
Blue Jays 16-6 for the Eastern A title
and advance to the State Tournament
in Lewistown. Te Dodgers face
