New Release ESP Stress Analysis Software
String Stress Analysis Software for Deviated Well Applications
Western Submersible Pumps (WSP) is pleased to announce the release of our new ESP-Bending software to analyze deviated well applications.
Introduction Due to advances in drilling technology i.e. steerable drilling tools, deviated well completions (horizontal wells) are now possible. Deviated and horizontal wells offer many advantages, i.e. high productivity and more efficient well management, than conventional vertical wells. Although these advantages are attractive to oil producers, installing and producing from deviated/horizontal wells is challenging for the ESP industry. Not only does ESP string bending during installation present a problem, but gas separation methods and the design of the motor and seal to facilitate operation in a horizontal position are also problems that need to be considered.
As part of WSP Engineerings effort to address problems associated with ESP installations in deviated wells, the ESP Stress analysis software has been developed. This software utilizes Nonlinear Gab Structural Analysis with Finite Element Method to determine the level of stress an ESP string will experience during installation in a deviated well. The WSP ESP Stress analysis software is a tool that will help WSP Application Engineers determine if an ESP system can safely be installed in a deviated well
Traditionally, as a rule of thumb, ESPs could be installed in any well with a dogleg severity below 9deg/100 ft of deviation. In some cases, installation through a deviation of 12 deg/100 ft has been reportedly successful, but for extreme cases a special tool or a complete change of the ESP string had to be considered. The rule of thumb was helpful in some applications, but proceeding with an installation without a full understanding of ESP bending might result in the failure of the ESP system and associated economic losses.
Through the analysis of ESP bending stresses, an Application Engineer will be able to understand more about the downhole situation, and if necessary he will be able to take actions to prepare or modify the ESP string design to provide for a safe installation and a longer run-life. Although ESP bending while passing through a dogleg is acceptable within limitations, running an ESP in a bent or stressed position is completely unacceptable. The ESP Stress analysis software will analyze the position of an ESP in a deviated well and allow the Application Engineer to modify his applications design as necessary.

Data Input
Data input forms / templates will be supplied to APC service centers world-wide. The input method is very simple and self-explanatory. In addition to the general information required for identification of the project, multiple boxes are provided to facilitate selection of the proposed down-hole string. The WSP product line is already in the system data-base. By clicking the down-arrow at the right side of each box a drop-down selection list will appear allowing the Application Engineer to select each component within the proposed ESP string. The system will automatically assign the equipment length and diameter during the selection process.
The completed ESP Stress Analysis Input Form in Excel should be forwarded to WSP Engineerings ASPE (Applications & Special Projects Engineering) Group (to the attention of Adel Ahmed) along with a request for a full analysis. ASPE will process the given string and well information and will provide a recommendation based on the results of the analysis. Below are samples of the ESP Stress Analysis Input Form and associated analysis outputs
