Update
Readers Choice and
Seventh Grade Sizzlers
Celebrations
It was a jam-up week of celebrating
reading success at Gettys on March 12 and 14,
as a record 201 7th and 8th grade students
attended voting parties in the media center! 102
8th graders read and passed AR tests on at least
3 of their books, and 99 7th graders did the same.
Many students read more than the minimum!
Congratulations to 8th grader Isaac Hoxit, who
read 12! Isaac Bautista read 10, and Chandini
Patel completed 6. Numerous others read 4 or 5
of the titles. In 7th grade, Ciera Field read 12 of
the books, Seth Hall and Allison Smith both read
11, Praj Patel completed 9, and Hannah Willis
and Caleb Register read 6. Seeing the number of
successful 7th graders jump from 58 last year to

99 this year was especially exciting!

Bad Things Happen to Good Books, Part 2

In the last issue we looked at what happens to books that are not special library-bound editions.
They look terrible and fall apart after several trips through book bags, lockers, and other unspeakable
horrors. Books with special library bindings are built to last a long time, but they often show a different
kind of damage: dirt and gunk. Here are some photogenic examples from one of our most popular sets,
A Series of Unfortunate Events. More on these books in the next issue!

6th Graders Learn About

Nonfiction
Mrs. Youngbloods students recently learned about
the Dewey Decimal System and the nonfiction collection at
Gettys. After a lesson about Dewey and a chance to do
some Rappin with Melvil, students gained a whole new
perspective on whats up with all those numbers!
