Broad Haven Village Hall Committee had a busy summer and managed to raise
1300 through a variety of fundraising events. This has enabled the go ahead for
the new village hall ceiling. If you havent already seen it, please pop into the village
hall at soon as you can to see the massive improvement. Not only does the hall
look so much better it will be warmer and much more comfortable.
The much improved ceiling
The hall is due to be painted within the next few weeks which will improve the facility
further.
Plans to replace the current kitchen are in hand and we hope to have news of this
in the next Diary.

How to attract them to your garden: Jays are relatively infrequent garden visitors,
but may be tempted by peanuts and scraps. They are more likely to use your
garden for storage of seeds. Aside from seeds they feed on carrion and eggs.
Conservation status: Green (no cause for concern).
BTO Garden BirdWatch data show that, at this time of year, one in ten participants record Jays in their garden. In 2014 I saw a Jay during two weeks of the
year, in 2013 it was ten weeks and so far this year its been six.
Make Your Garden Count!
If you enjoy watching birds and other creatures in your garden, and want to help
track their fortunes, then BTO Garden BirdWatch could be perfect for you. Please

BIRD WATCH
Welcome to this months Bird Watch. Im one of two volunteer Ambassadors for the
British Trust for Ornithologys (BTO) Garden BirdWatch scheme in South Wales.
Each month I introduce you to a bird or other animal that you might see in your
garden.
Bird of the Month: Jay
At this time of year there is generally plenty of natural food around. Birds only have
themselves to care for they have no dependants and, generally, no territories.
Mixed-species flocks of birds can often be seen foraging together. You wont see
Jays among these as they prefer their own company even established pairs
spend much of their time apart. Jays are tree seed specialists with a passion for
acorns. Although they favour woodlands, at this time of year you may spot them
using your garden as an acorn larder, carefully burying their treasure in the lawn or
borders. They find a different hiding place for every single seed! Birds can travel up
to 2 miles to find acorns, carrying up to nine in their bill and adapted gullet,
although three is more usual. Part of the crow family, Jays have a pinkish-brown
body and black tail; look out for the dazzling azure flash on their wings and bold
white rump as they fly away. Jays are shy birds and tend to see you before you see
them. To warn all other birds in the area they issue a loud, harsh screaming call.
Did you know?
A Jay will stash up to
5,000 acorns during autumn. They have great
memories but will inevitably forget the location
of some, thus helping
new oak trees to grow.
Our Jays may be joined
by cousins from northern and eastern Europe
if those countries have a
poor acorn crop.
The Welsh name is Ysgrech y Coed, meaning
Scream of the Wood.
1 In 1985 Mick Hucknell formed a boy band which after great success
disbanded in 2010. It is about to embark on a 30th anniversary reunion tour.
What was the bands original name and why was it so named?
2. What percentage of the population of Europe is redheaded. And that of
Wales?
3. Which of the following were not born with red hair : Winston Churchill, Dylan
Thomas, Prince Harry, Simon Pegg, Gillian Anderson?
4. According to their names which part of these birds is coloured red:
Redstart, Redpoll? And what has become The National Bird of Wales?
5. Where is Pembrokeshires only wild herd of Red Deer to be found?
6. What was Red October in the quizs title?
7. Just 120 miles from Pembrokeshire there exists in the wild colonies of
monster alien insects unknown in the rest of the world. What type of insect,
where are they found, and of what chemical is their sting composed?
8. There are just 3 places left in Wales where red squirrels are to be found.
Where are they and where in Pembrokeshire is it proposed to introduce them?
Chimney Sweep

QUIZ : ANSWERS
1.' Red'; When asked originally the bands name Mick said Red, simply red and
the name stuck. Red after the colour of Micks hair. 2. 2%; 12% of Welsh people
have red hair. It is a recessive gene possessed by 40% of the Welsh and both
parents need it to produce a red headed child. 3. They all have natural red hair. 4.
Start is Old English for tail, from this came stark and stark naked means with
the rump exposed! Poll is Middle English for head, hence poll tax or pollarded.
The Red Kite was all but extinct in Wales but there are now 1,000 breeding pairs.
50 may be seen together at the feeding centre at Llanddeusant, (Brecon Beacons).
5. Ramsey Island. 6. A 1990 film from Tom Clancys book starring Sean Connery
featured a Soviet nuclear submarine Red October threatening the USA. 7. In the
estuary to Dublins River Liffey lies an island, 1 mile long, mile wide where in
1945 were discovered these colonies of monster red ants looking just like jig-saws
or mosaics, being made up of small fragments of male and female tissue, all
jumbled together. This cannot be due to genetic chance because the black ant
colonies are the same and radiation studies were negative. No-one can explain this
mystery. Their bite contains formic acid (Formica: Latin: Ant) 8. Anglesey, Clocaenog (North Wales), Tywi Valley in the Cambrian Mountains, Mid Wales where the
genotype is the purest in Britain. The Monks on Caldy hope to introduce the red
squirrel there.
